Wonder if they do mid series cover changes just to make people rebuy the first few books and increase their sales for us perfectionists.

I think it’s to try and “rebrand” a series to better attract attention to it, since it’s usually for lesser known works. Though I don’t necessarily disagree that what you mentioned might be a possibility 😮😮😮

Perdido Street Station is the first book of the Bas-Lag series, and each book is its own standalone story but there are threads tying each together. My favourite is the second book in the series, The Scar.

I've got an alarm set for Broken Binding's midnight editions of the Dandelion Dynasty. Absolutely GORGEOUS.

Also, can I just add that for being as stunning as they are, The Broken Binding is really NOT cost prohibitive? Well. Not in the SE genre, anyway. I’ve seen books for thousands! Not saying that $50 is cheap, just not that they’re taking advantage of readers, IMO. Full hardback regular books are about $30, and most of TBB special editions are 25-30 pounds. Yes, shipping to America adds some, but overall, I end up paying somewhere around $50 for them. That’s not bad! A beautiful, signed special edition, plus international tracked shipping for $50. Love them, they have my business forever!

Yay I totally agree about Owlcrate's version of Ruthless Vows! I think they feel higher quality than Fairyloot's, too!

I completely agree on how beautiful the Illumicrate editions of Song of the Last Kingdom series are! I am so relieved I just got to buy book 2 from the waitlist after panicking that I missed the original sale. I can’t wait to receive mine! Are you able to link where I can buy the matching dust jacket for Fireborne? I was (and am still) so upset they never released the hardback in the new cover! I’m hoping for special editions too

So amazing! The more I look at various special editions and learn about those who make them, the more I fear for my wallet. But seriously, can't wait to start building a collection... and hopefully one day, creating my own special editions! Owlcrate Adult books have been really good! I don’t think the special editions are as pretty as some of the other boxes but the selections are top notch and most of them are signed!

I’ve been really impressed with Broken Binding, I’ve seen a lot of people showing them off lately. I just signed up for their waitlist for both science fiction and fantasy.

They did a mid-series cover change for The Warden by Ford and I have the first hardback which im cranky about.

I just bought a beautiful sprayed edges hardback edition of Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner, and I wanted to get the sprayed edge version of Godkiller to match but I can only find the standard hardback. I settled for that, so at least I have them both but if they ever release a set for the trilogy (when the third book is released) I might have to buy it. The cover art is SO beautiful for both books so far.

For Emily Henry’s books you are spot on as far as I believe. I am in Canada and we are in the same boat. I’ve been waiting for the paper back as well because same as you I want them all to match so I am happy to see it’s finally out in paperback. Ooooohhhhhh I always wondered how you had a hardback of Fire Born in the background. That makes sense now lol.

I've never had a book subscription service so this may be a dumb question but, do they tell you the names of the artists that create all these beautiful book covers and edges?

I just had the opposite experience buying the Tor hardback box set from the US to the UK lol. Paid a kings ransom but i had to have the Michael Whelan covers

Elliot, have you seen the new Carrie by Stephen King edition from Blackwell? It looks amazing. Troy Tradup did a video showing it off, and it is reasonably priced. I'm going to need to go to their website to pick one up. Happy reading.

One I used Pango bucks for (basically “store credit” on the Pango app) and for the second, to make sure I didn’t have to buy it second hand for an increased price, I got an owlcrate subscription for a couple of months. I was curious to try out their regular subscription anyway, so it was a win win :)

Owlcrates quality is really superior to some of the other boxes. Owlcrate has head and tail bands with ribbon book marks a lot of the time as well. In particular I have found fairyloots quality really poor recently. Books feel cheap and poorly glued together.

I think all these different boxes are definitely giving each other incentive to really do their best, and to try and stand out. Completely agree about Owlcrate’s quality, at least from the books I’ve gotten 📚

I don’t think you can from Illumicrate directly unfortunately, but maybe some are being sold second hand (although I wouldn’t be surprised if the price was marked way up 😕)

Not gonna lie, i am so jelly of the time you have to read so much. I understand that it's what you do for your channel, too, but im sure even if you didn't have your channel, you would be an avid reader. My perfect, IDEAL life would be to read and write and create in a tiny, secluded town every day.

Sorry to bother everyone but I'm trying to find a book. I'm pretty sure Elliot spoke about it either earlier this year or last year but it involved a young hero/chosen one but he wasn't very good and an older lady was the mentor/reluctant teacher (I think she was super skilled herself). I'd very much appreciate any help 🥺❤
