The way you find out if a Barracuda has cigutera or not is to cook it, and then take 1 bite out of it and wait a few hours. If no sickness or throwing up, take 2 bites and wait 2 more hours, if nothing then you are good to eat the whole fish.

About natural coral reefs off the coast of Texas, don’t you all have the Flower Garden’s out there? I’ve seen videos of divers off coast of Texas and Louisiana swimming in what looks like a Caribbean coral reef that’s smack dab south of Texas and Louisiana in the Gulf. I’m just curious if there should be ciguatera concerns for the Barracuda there, or if it’s only a concern further south in the Gulf off Florida, the south East Atlantic and the Caribbean reef systems alone? It would be interesting to see if it’s just a regional concern.

How far out are those rigs you spearfish at? I’ve always heard you have to run a long way to get to deep water off the Texas coast. Also I had no idea there was clear water like that off Texas! That’s insane. Got to run 40+ miles to find water like that off Dauphin Island, AL

It all depends, some are 2 miles out to 60+. The most important factor is timing when the blue water is in. I can dive a zone one week with it being clear and the next week it’s chalk color with ripping current. In the summer here sometimes it’ll get crystal a mile or 2 off the beach.

I think you guys have it similar to Louisiana. I guess the river murks it up close for y’all, I hear they never get it crystal blue that close. They say it’ll get clear green but that’s about as good as it’ll get.

Small 'Cudas are ok. I would not eat any over 10 lbs. Once they start eating reef fish, its a guessing game.

We don’t. There used to be a bunch here in the 60s and 70s, but from what I’ve heard and read scuba divers shot them religiously. I hear about some being seen every now and then but I’ve personally never seen or had issues with them.

I’d say it comes down to preference. My RA roller is running 16mm bands rigged for max power currently, so I have to use a load assist. This makes loading more difficult & tedious than the pathos. The pathos is a breeze to load. You can do handloadable 14.5 mm bands on the single roller if you want something easier to load, but will lose some punch. RA 100 roller set up properly is a beast. Easily outperforms a standard 100cm gun. However the issue I find in this size is that I can’t find threaded spears to fit such a short euro gun. The other factor is that the slip tip likely won’t even stay tight because there’s not more than one band to hold it. On my double roller I have to load both bands when using a slip tip to keep it secure. With fresh bands pathos really outperforms most standard guns in its length. It’s very easy to load, light in water and can easily run a slip tip. I tested it compared to a stock Aimrite USA double roller and there wasn’t a big difference. Aimrite wasn’t rigged for max power but that’s still saying something.

If I’m only shooting snapper in conditions like this day I like using the standard setup as it’s easy to load. I haven’t been using my 100 roller lately because I keep bending the flopper spears. That $ adds up lol

While descending I equalize the pressure in my ears. There isn’t any pain- There’s a lot of videos on KZread showing how to equalize for diving.
