Speakers Shootout: KEF 104/2 vs YAMAHA NS1000

Музыка

** Hi-Res Audio recorded at 24bit/96kHz with dedicated XY microphone setup **
** Listen through a good pair of Headphones/IEMs for the best listening experience **
*Note: KEF speakers are about 2-3dB louder than the NS-1000, this is due to difference in each speaker specs, i.e. Sensitivity and Impedance.

As I said in his 1000M,1000,and 690 test all of this can change due to mix and match. Over the years, I passed on 2 pair of 104/2's, but i do own two pair 103.2's. I did this due to the missing equalizer. Some of the Kef models needed it for optimum sound or rather bass. Certain models of Kef are just hard to beat, has nothing to do with DSP as one comment was made and I love Yamaha

NS1000 is a natural sound monitor. More true to the recording. It's a neutral speaker. Other speakers can sometimes sound better because they're designed to make the sound richer. That being said, that's nothing that can not be done with a DSP. If you want a certain sound, send it to the NS1000 a certain way, and it will faithfully reproduce it.

Earlier in the year, I had KEF 104/2 and NS-1000 both in the house at the same time, and I did this same shootout. Even after recapping and putting new ferro-fluid in the KEF's, the KEF's sounded darker and vailed compared to the Yamaha's. The Yamaha's still have their original caps. And despite KEF's reputation for having great midrange, I think the Yam's are much better, the best I've heard on any speaker that I've owned. The 104/2's just sounded dull to me. The KEF's have found a new home and the Yamaha's are still with me and are played daily.

The kef's alway's sounded on the slow side because of the bextrene membranes that are quit "sloppy", to much flex to follow the signal and smeared out the pulses but never harsh, good for long listening. The Yahama mid domes are the opposite, fast, rigid, wide dispersion but lack lower mid range. The large woofer needs to do this part, in my opinion not a ideal fit, a smaller and faster woofer would bring better result in the low mid range. But for it's time a great speaker.

@@chadrobinson7234 In general, speaker units and materials did not develop that much, looks even they go "retro" for beryllium again in high end. I just finished a refoam of Advent Legacy II's and put them as B set speakers on my Yamaha CR-2020, with NS-690 II's on A. I found very similar characteristics changes between them. The 690's are near field monitors ( from the research i have done) and the Advents are a recreation of the original Large Advent, a hifi loudspeaker... I am wondering if this difference is what I/we are hearing here. The Yammy's are GREAT speakers! But, the difference is clear.

You have the Yamaha's too far apart plus should reverse them. Your orientation effectively pulls them apart another 10" from each other because of the driver arrangement. The midrange is way too thin. The Yamaha's will outperform the Kefs on nearly every possible listening test, every time on any day. Some may like the bass punch of the Kefs a bit more. But there is no way they'll ever get even close to the transparency, detail, naturalness and accuracy of NS1000s

Not really a fair comparison if they aren't level matched? The 104/2 is 92db speaker and the NS1000 are 89dB speaker - which obviously makes a massive difference in a shoot-out using the same amplifier...

I respect your opinion and am well aware of the diff specs, however while I realise it is not ideal, it was the best I could do to give people an idea of the different sound signature of both speakers using my own time and resources. Thanks

I agree completely with clubsport911. Not only do they have no bass, the mid also sounds out-of-phase. This is because one of the Yamaha's is hokked up in reverse polarity. They should be hooked up correctly, then tested again. Though this platform doesn't do either of them justice, demonstrating with a speaker with reversed polarity isn't fair. Since you are doing something here, people assume you know what you're doing. Please do it right. You have all sorts of people believing the Yamaha isn't as good, when it is clearly hooked up wrong. Hook it up right, then do the test again and see who wins in a fair fight.

It is impossible to sound KEF better than Yamaha! I think the amplification is not suitable for Yamaha or something is wrong.

Yes. The sound is far from what I'm hearing with my pair driven by a Line Magnetic tube amp (KT-88). Something is terrible wrong, either amplification, wrong phase, the room or the speakers them self.
