Speaker Series: Islam, American Muslims and Civil Rights

Hassan Shibly, Executive Director of the Florida Chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations, joined moderator Marc Bernier on May 8 at Embry-Riddle for a President's Speaker Series discussion on Islam, American Muslims, civil liberties and promoting understanding of the Muslim faith.
The founder of the Center for American Muslim Understanding, Shibly has taught courses on Islamic belief, law, history, spirituality and culture, and works with interfaith and social service organizations to promote cooperation and understanding between diverse faiths and cultures. He is a consultant on Islam for non-profit organizations, government agencies, media organizations, youth groups and law enforcement.
Shibly runs a publishing company and has appeared on local and national media outlets, including NPR, Voice of America and the New York Times.
He holds a political science degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a law degree from the University at Buffalo Law School.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is a federation of legally independent, governed and managed chapters across the country that defend the civil liberties of Americans. CAIR Florida Inc. has offices in Tampa and Pembroke Pines.
This event is an offering of the President's Speaker Series, sponsored by Embry-Riddle President Dr. John P. Johnson and moderated by Special Assistant to the President Marc Bernier, and is intended to engage students, the campus community and area residents in productive discussion. The event will be broadcast live on-the-air (1150-AM, WNDB) and via the Internet on the Marc Bernier Show website.
