Speaker Repair - Refoaming a Woofer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Refoaming a Cerwin Vega Woofer
FAQ:
- What kind of glue do you use?
I use ElmersE1323All Purpose glue for paper cones and Elmers E430 Craft Glue for plastic or other cones made of non-porous materials.
- Do you have to cut the center dome and shim the coil?
No, it's optional but centering the coil so that it does not rub is important. CW and some other high-end brands have rather tight tolerances so shimming these brands is a good idea. New domes are cheap and can usually be ordered with the foam kit.

    Back in 1982 I bought a set of Acoustical Research speakers, which I always treasured. Had to eventually refoam them. Sound great now.

    I built my own speaker boxes about 37 years ago. They each have 1 12" woofer, 2 midrange speakers, and 4 tweeters. But after their old age, each woofers foam ring began to turn to pure dust. For less than $30, I repaired both woofers by replacing the foam rings, and presto bingo, they are as good as new. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing the entire woofers. It took about an hours work per woofer.

    I did this to a old set of cv at10s made in 1986. Stored them for almost 10 years because of rotted surrounds. Just couldn't throw them away. Then I found the refoam kits from parts express for around $30. Sound good as new.

    Best refoam video I have seen. Many people don't remove the dust cap or shim the voice coil so they get "rub" and distortion. The person who did this Cerwin Vega repair is a craftsman! Thanks

    Yes. That's not quite true. I can't do that all the time - and not all drivers. Only in the summer - when the glues dry fast and I can use glues like sticky-tape. In the summer I can go faster. As repair companies do, we get urgent walk-ins. A pair of cabinets came in that needed 4, 8 inch surrounds replaced. I took the drivers out, did the surrounds and put the drivers back in. And it all worked fine - first time. Repair time - 15 minutes.

    Shimming is optional, I have refoamed several speakers without shimming them, but you must pay more attention in manually aligning the coil around the magnet so that it does not touch it. Cerwin Vega and some other brands are notorious for having a very tight gap between coil and magnet so shimming makes it that much easier.

    @marcvie9 In order to insert the shims between the coil and magnet, this makes sure the coil is perfectly centered around the magnet. It is an important step, specially with high performance speakers where the gap is very tight.

    I used rubber drawer liner sheets for tool box’s ,you have to make your own speaker size templates out of card board into the ring pattern, use tacky glue , don’t need to remove dust cover just center the new cut out ring an start by gluing in small areas let it dry then finish gluing, make sure you clean off old foam rubber real well, this rubber foam sheets last forever an don’t compromise sound quality!!

    Foam offers larger excursion of the woofer compared to most other materials. The material is chosen based on the entire design and frequency output of each driver. Foam is good choice for boxed woofers and subs for example, while rubber and stiffer materials are perfect for open woofers such as those used in cars...

    This is an excellent tutorial for Cerwin-Vega owners for how to fix your woofers, if attacked by foam rot! Any regular glue should work for this.. (School-type seems to be the best pick) Cerwin-Vega is a good quality brand, so think about a better solution than replacing the woofers if attacked by foam rot.. This video proves it! eBay should have repair kits for Cerwin-Vega.. Anyway, the Internet is fairly huge, so it would be easy to find such kits tho ;) Good luck!

    The rubber surrounds on the subwoofers is there for strength and is not likely used to tune the resonant frequency of the cone. The light weight foam surrounds are likely used on the higher end drivers to maintain cone mass.

    where did you buy the new organ foam? What about the dust cap? Could you provide website information? Also, excuse my ignorance, but when do you generaly want to do this? When the speaks sound "loose" right? Some of my boombox speakers have a hiss (especially at higher volumes). Not sure what the cause is? Awesome work by the way. Very helpful. I'm into vintage boomboxes and caught between restoring originals or buying speakers that will work that are better quality.

  • @lazyh-online4839

    @lazyh-online4839

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Mike T A "loose" sounding speaker could mean anything to anyone, it's not a question necessarily of what kind of sound it's making, but where the damage is. A hiss I doubt is coming from the need for a refoam, does the hiss happen all the time when the power is on or when playing certain notes or just when playing/playing loudly? Usually a hiss comes from something electrical, unrelated to the drivers. A refoam is necessary when there is actual damage to the speaker surround, which can be made of hardened cloth, rubber, or foam, and you can buy re"faom"ing kits for all of these, though some sizes are harder to find than others. Another possible explanation for a "hiss" like sound only when playing or playing loudly is if the voice coil is rubbing on the motor assembly, and in theory a recone or refoam could help this but only if the rubbing is because the voice coil is hanging to one side and shimming while reassembling would help realign it, though usually if the voice coil is rubbing the sound isn't described as a "hiss". If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

    Just bought a pair of Duntech tower speakers from Australia yesterday. They were 10 Gs when the came out in the 80s,I got them for 1,300 . Anyhow after playing a few records very loud the surrounds went,all 4 of them. Im just wondering if I should do this myself or get an experienced repair person to do them. I cant even find a place in town that sells the surrounds,and Im wondering how important it is to get the original brand for them. Any advice is much appreciated !

  • @flyurway

    @flyurway

    The exact dimension of the surround isn't rocket science, get as close as you can, probably a bit larger OD or smaller ID if you can't find an exact replacement size. Doing them yourself will be the same as any brand speaker, take your time, be sure you get the VC centered before letting the glue set on the last step. If you can push in & out at the center of the cone and not hear any light scrunching noise (of the VC hitting anything) of any kind, you're good. That's why they cut off the cap and use the shims as it's pretty foolproof. Others leave the cap on and just adjust the centering as needed until sure the VC isn't hitting anything.

    Shim the coil with THREE shims/spacers 120* apart.. You'll get better centering, and use enough thickness to lock the MMs in it's home position while doing this. Use an air compressor to keep everything completely clean. Cleanliness is next to Godliness when doing loudspeaker work. Hope this helps-Good video tho- Jason/PMR
