Speaker or Author? Wordsworth's "She Dwelt among the Untrodden Ways"

By using William Wordsworth's famous poem we seek to draw the distinction between author and speaker and determine which one was in love with the mysterious Lucy.
To learn more about biographical fallacies: • How Sad was it Suppose...
She dwelt among the untrodden ways
Beside the springs of Dove,
A Maid whom there were none to praise
And very few to love:
A violet by a mossy stone
Half hidden from the eye!
-Fair as a star, when only one
Is shining in the sky.
She lived unknown, and few could know
When Lucy ceased to be;
But she is in her grave, and, oh,
The difference to me!

    Can we consider fair as a star as a sort of simile and what do he mean by "fair"? Does he mean beauty?

    It is absolutely a simile! And "fair" does refer to beautiful and rare. Great interpretation!

    There are few questions sir.. 1)Is the poem is an elegy?? 2) IS the poem is associated to the lyrical ballads?? 3) in the 2nd stanza we see the word "violet "... what does it mean? Is Lucy is compared to violet? A student of English Literature, Dept. Of English Aligarh Muslim university... India

    Great questions! I think you could consider the poem an elegy since it's written for someone who has died. Lyrical Ballads is the collected work published by Wordsworth and Coleridge, and "Untrodden Ways" appears in its second volume. Lucy certainly is compared to a violet, but it's a really specific violet. Read that stanza one more time and see if you can figure out what makes this violet so unique. Hope that helped! Good luck with your studies!

    'She' isn't a real person. Otherwise she wouldn't be able to travel along any of those 'untrodden' ways. After all, they're 'untrodden'.
