That's Josiah Tyree, plays in Kody Norris Show. He's playing it straight here but I assure you the guy can do stuff on the banjo you didn't know a banjo could do.

Precisely like Ralph Stanley banjo playing, his blues licks, even his backup licks while he is singing, and his singing itself for that matter. Not sure if he was trying to sound like him, but he if he was, he was successful. Stanley of course played an archtop banjo but this player has a flathead. You can get a similar sound by tightening the skin on a flathead to near bursting. But you gotta really be careful. I've ruined brand new skins trying to tune a flathead skin way up. I finally gave up on trying to make my flathead sound like Doug Dillard's raised head, and just bought a dang raised head because it was too expensive to keep buying heads. The fiddle and mandolin breaks...perfect.
