Thanks for the video. We just adopted a 3 yr female from the shelter. She was transfered from one county shelter to another county shelter. When she was spayed her when she was in heat. How can I tell if she had prior puppies? I like your videos, very educational !

Do you charge more to spay a cat when its in heat? My local vet adds another 50 on top of the 109 thats his usual cost for spaying a cat. I got back, she still exhibited signs of estrrus and you can well imagine what was like with her being a Siamese/Burnese. She also came back with a bulge behind her incision that the vet said was fat (this, on a petite cat that barely weighed 4 pounds) and it would smooth out as she healed. We called the office after a week or so when none of that lump disappeared or got smaller at all and apparently we were told it had been sold and the new owner refused to treat the old owner's mistakes. She continued spraying the house so a friend of ours took her as a barn cat and she became quite the ratter.

What would happen if you spay during a phantom pregnancy? I know this is different but I'm curious because the hormones must be all over the shop; right?

Idk everyone have different opinions but to me i will love to have a grandpuppy ..

Love your videos Dr! I have been feeding my dog half raw, half home-cooked(not in the same meal) for a while. I just read your book and got some new ideas. Question: I use The Honest Kitchen Base Mix (just veggies and fruits) and mix it with ground meat. Now I want to add organ meat and sardines as you recommended it. As base mix + meat only will already meet AAFCO nutrition requirements, I wonder if me adding extra organs will make me over-supplement my dog's diet? Is it possible to give my dog too much Vitamin A, D..etc? Thank you.

Excellent question! I have also read your book and have been cooking my dogs' food. They go crazy over it! I really want to make sure they're getting all they need nutritionally. I have been giving liver and heart, chicken for my chicken and turkey recipes and beef for my beef and lamb recipes. I missed my calling, I always wished I had studied Veterinarian Medicine. Thank you for this video, I appreciate learning what I missed.

Why are people so disgusted, mad, etc? This is one of the most normal procedures to happen to dogs and cats, along with other animals probably. Most pets owners neuter their animals, so this shouldn't be as shocking or disgusting as some people seem to be making this out to be. Honestly, I also question why you watched the video when it says exactly what type of video it is in the title? :/ Seriously, if you knew you weren't going to like it, why watch? >_

Tepadj Because wanting to make the homeless animal population smaller is propaganda? Do you understand how many strays there are? Not only that, male dogs are sometimes unbearably horny and will not stay off of other dogs, animals, and people. Many of them are overly excited and will pee all over the floor at the smallest "excitements". I'm not sure why you think neutering is such a propaganda movement.

Congratulations! My parents have a Chihuahua that should have been spayed years ago. That little monster is in heat right now. I'm fine with people keeping female dogs intact only if they keep them kenneled, or indoors, and 100% supervised and/or leashed, or behind a fence (still supervised!!!!) until that stinking heat cycle is over. Grrrrr!

Neuters are one of the simplest surgeries possible. Ironically, spays are one of the more complicated surgeries that can be done--when compared to all other common procedures. Neutering usually does not require going into the abdominal cavity, but a spay always does.

Generally there is not this much blood associated with the traditional spay this female is in heat so there is more blood however yes spays are more involved than a neuter significantly

I know when my female dachshund would come in heat it would make my other three 2 neutered males and 1 spayed female go nuts. They would all try to hump on her. Just because they get fixed doesn't stop them from trying, that is a complete myth.

+Audrone Padervinskaite The main reason to get dogs fixed is to stop them from breeding. It also protects females from getting a uterine infection(pyometra) which is life threatening and also keeps them from getting uterine cancer. It also lowers the chances for mammary cancer. For males it calms them down a lot and keeps them from getting testicular cancer. After a female is spayed she will no longer allow breeding and will snap at any dog that tries. But males will still try to mate with a female in heat who's willing, they just can't make her pregnant. But I should state that they can't get a female pregnant after a certain time frame after they're neutered. Until then it is advised to keep them separate as some sperm are still in the pipeline. In the end it's up to the person on what they would rather do. But me personally have always spayed and neutered to keep unwanted pregnancies from happening and to keep them from getting cancer or uterine infections. It also doesn't change their personalities as most people fear.

For me, the biggest reason I recommend neutering is because of the HUGE sexual stress the animal has to endure. The urge to mate is the strongest instinct of an animal. It is so strong that animals will give up food to mate. They will risk all sorts of dangers - even death - to mate. And what is horrible about dogs is that because they do not have a seasonal heat cycle, you never get to know exactly if and when a bitch is in heat in the neighbourhood, and that may mean that there is the possibility that male dogs have to endure sexual frustration every single day. We humans are intelligent and have useful hands, so if we get horny, we can masturbate, but unfortunately for dogs, they cannot use their paws to satisfy themselves, so most of them (I say "most" because some of them find ways to relieve themselves) just have to endure the excruciating stress. Remember that dogs are not wild animals. They are pets, and we made the decision to get a pet, so it is the responsibility of the owner to keep the pet happy. Neutering a dog improves it's QOL greatly, as can be seen in their increase in attention to their owner, ability to make more dog friends, decrease in aggression (which is a stressful thing for any animal), allowed places where un-neutered dogs cannot, free from cancers of body parts they don't use, and A LONGER LIFE SPAN.

I always thought of spaying or neutering a normal. But I just got my dog 5 months ago and were about to neuter him and honestly I'm kind of sad, bc it's sad to see him die and take his bubbly self away. It's hard to explain, but I mean if he had a puppy it would be a part of him and after he passes I'll always know that I have a part of him stil with me. I want my cute little baby to be remembered forever if you know what I mean. I want someone to feel his love he gives me and I want that to continue. He's so friendly, energetic and a mischievous socks thief, I want him to keep sharing his love to others through his puppies. Maybe I would neuter him after having a litter of puppies. But honestly, I don't think it's going to happen and I know I'm going to regret it. To just selfishly have his love to myself.
