It could potentially cover how Todd grew his toy company to produce more toys/collectibles beyond his golden goose, eventually segueing into video games, movies, and sports-based toys.

Ive had a few conversations with Todd through facebook and hes such a genuinely nice guy. He loves toys just as much as the collector. Hes a big kid and I love him. His toys are the most detailed on the market. And have been for years and years. I love the figures he makes. And i love how particular he is about his brand. He wants it done right. And im grateful for that.

I always find it ironic that Todd left Marvel to help create Image so he could tell his own stories about his own characters - but one of the first things he did was to bring in guest writers (like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman) who were largely responsible for defining Spawn's story. I don't believe that the Spawn figures _were_ originally designed for selling to adult collectors. If you read contemporary interviews that Todd did, he was _still_ marketing the toys to children (he still does, btw, he mentions children buying his toys several times in recent interviews); but _older_ children like teens. I think Todd didn't really start to view adult collectors as an audience for his toys until you start getting into the horror lines; lines like "Twisted Land of OZ', "Twisted Fairy Tales", "Tortured Souls", etc. McFarlane Toys certainly did helped usher in the era of adult collectibles, _IN THE USA;_ but don't forget that adults were collecting toys in Japan around the same time and Bandai were certainly one company that was marketing to adult collectors. But McFarlane _were_ inarguably responsible for bringing in realistic sculpts and adult themes in toys that transcended the blurred line of toys like the Rambo and Alien figures - obviously children's toys based on adult-themed properties, not adult themed toys themselves. I do think it's a little bit disingenuous to credit McFarlane toys with the creation of the adult toy collecting industry. No single company was responsible for that. I accept that it's great marketing for McFarlane, and Todd is nothing if not a great marketer, but they didn't do it all by themselves. Thank you for the video. I enjoyed it very much and it's nice to see the original Spawn figures!

McFarlane came with the repaint idea. And the one per case figure, when he put one Malebolgia figure per case. He did it mainly because the size of the figure use much more plastic and the company didn't made much money as with the other figures in the same case. There was a darker shade Malebolgia, called by the fans brown Malebolgia. That figure was later change to green as soon Todd find out that the color wan't what he requested from the factory. Todd find out that figure was sought after by collectors, and might had to do with his idea of doing repaints. He also had the comic book exclusive Spawn 50th figure called worm head Spawn. Only one figure was sent to every comic book store that order 50 comics of the 50th issue of spawn. Many comic books store that don't sell that many Spawn comic books miss out on it. The few comic book stores that receive the figure sold them right away for $100 and up. Todd did this and many other marketing ideas at the time that toy makers where only interested in selling toys to kids. I remember going to a local toy show on 1997 and all toys where mostly 60's to 80's. The few 95-97 toys i saw there where a few spawn figures like Malebolgia, The Maxx and the Angela with the ribbon on her spear and they where not cheap.

I started my collecting with McFarlane toys in 97-98 (I was 12-13 at the time) with a couple of figures from the Spawn movie and then Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees from the Movie Maniacs series 1. I had figures before that but I wasn't actively collecting them which is why McFarlane Toys will always have a special place in my heart. Love your videos, Dan.

I had no idea that "modern detailed collector figures" started with McFarlane... but it makes perfect sense. 20 years ago, the coolest figure I ever saw was a Spawn in a comic shop. I had to buy it, having no clue who the character even was. Then came the movie maniacs, and dragons... Thanks Todd, for sending me on a long, expensive journey, haha.

I loved that "welcome to my world" commercial. I flipped out and hunted and hunted for The Maxx ask was a gigantic fan of the MTV animation in jr high. But for me it was the first commercial for the spawn figures that got me hooked. The first time I herd it, I actually thought the announcer said MY NAME followed by "The evil Shawn" instead o "medevil spawn". After seeing the logoI i realized I miss herd the announcer but was hooked anyway from the badassery on display. My favorite figures are the more toyetic series from the mid 90s especially the first few series. The few things that bugged me was how the violator monster rig and spawn ally was undersized. I also took the plastic chains from the Spawn mobile and cut and carefully put them on the figure.

And it was all for free ,, i remember my sister said: yeah yeah pick what ever you want i dont care its a free bonus hahaha another great christmas , i still have a bunch of those figures in my shelf.

I agree that the "variant" is the bane of every collector. I started really collecting with the Halo Joyride figures, and while I eventually got every figure in the line, it was a nightmare. Then came McFarlane and ramped that up to 11. I have two entire rooms filled with Mcfarlane Halo variants from the entire line in storage bins. NECA did this too, but not anywhere as bad.

I still have my first run Spawn action figure. Just need to get a new cape for him. As well as that "why-the-hell-is-spawn-carrying-this" board with a nail in it.

I have to say that before Mcfarlane toys of course that we haved toybiz, kenner, etc and in Japan they haved Bandai and very good robots and figures... but with Spawn series and the anothers image comics toys really started the revolution about proportions, articulations, and faces... it changed everything. By the way also have to admit that was a little dissapointed that the figure of Spawn 3 was very different in hand that you watched in catalog and images, different kind of colors.

So... Serious question, why did McFarlane Toys, who were ahead of the game at the time... Seemingly quit? They were producing amazing, highly detailed collectable figures in their Movie Maniacs line: RoboCop, Jason Vorhees, Edward Scissorhands, Terminator, The Thing, Aliens. But then i remember seeing them in the shelves less and less, but replaced by baseball, basketball, sports figures, before stopping altogether. They virtually allowed for companies (namely Neca) to step up and take over as leaders in the collectable market. Neca is incredible! They've come so in their articulation and likeness, but i always wondered why McFarlane Toys quit while they were on top.

I bought Violator 1 mint in box, and I gotta say, he looks great sitting on the shelf! Even if the sculpt isn’t as amazing as something like Violator 3. I also own the 2017 colour tops commando Spawn who stands beside my Violator. I’m not necessarily a big Spawn fan, maybe not even a real fan, but one thing’s certain, I look forward to collecting more Spawn figures! BTW I still have the Violator comic & card

Great figures - not easily available in the UK at first; then one day, I went into a newsagent's shop, and there were the first six (and 'Hamburger' Spawn), for £1 each I spent £8 in total, as I also found the red variant Violator. My favourite figures that I bought later were the 'Samurai' Spawn, and the 'party' Angela. Room has meant getting rid of a lot of figures, but I still have the first eight, that I found by accident, whilst buying a can of pop. They're not going anywhere.
