Spawn is a fictional character appearing in a monthly comic book of the same name published by American company Image Comics, as well as in a number of films, television series, and video game adaptations set in the Image Universe. Created by Todd McFarlane, the character first appeared in Spawn (May 1992).
The series has spun off several other comics, including Angela, Curse of the Spawn, Sam & Twitch, and the Japanese manga Shadows of Spawn. Spawn was adapted into a 1997 feature film and portrayed by Michael Jai White, an HBO animated series lasting from 1997 until 1999, a series of action figures whose high level of detail made McFarlane Toys known in the toy industry, and a reboot film starring Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner. The character also appears in annual compilations, miniseries specials written by guest authors and artists, and numerous crossover storylines in other comic books, including Savage Dragon and Invincible.Todd McFarlane began drawing as a hobby at an early age, and created the character Spawn when he was 16, spending "countless hours" perfecting the appearance of each component of the character's visual design.
Spawn enjoyed considerable popularity upon its initial release in the 1990s. Comic book collecting was enjoying a marked upswing at the time, fueled by the speculator boom looking for the next hot book that would jump in value after its release. McFarlane had enjoyed superstar status among comic fans with his work on Spider-Man, which had featured McFarlane's name prominently as both writer and artist. McFarlane's subsequent break with Marvel and the formation of Image Comics was seen by many as a sea-change event, changing the very way in which comics were produced. Wizard, in May 2008, rated "The Launch of Image Comics" as 1 in the list of events that rocked the Comic Industry from 1991 to 2008.
The first issue of Spawn was very popular with sales of 1.7 million copies. During Spawn's second year of publication, Wizard noted that "The top dog at Image is undoubtedly Todd McFarlane's Spawn, which, without the added marketing push of fancy covers, polybagged issues, or card inserts has become the best-selling comic on a consistent basis that is currently being published." Sales slumped around the time of Spawn 25, but by Spawn 45 it was again a consistently strong seller.
The popularity of the franchise peaked with the 1997 Spawn feature film, the pre-release publicity for which helped make Spawn the top selling comic book for May 1997; in addition, the spin-off Curse of the Spawn 9 came in at fifth best-selling for the same month. However, the film was only a mild commercial success and failed to start a film franchise based on the character. A 2008 issue, Spawn 174, ranked 99th best-selling comic of the month with retail orders of 22,667. In October 2008, issue 185, which marked both a new creative direction and Todd McFarlane's return to the book, sold out at the distribution level and received a second printing. By issue 191 in May 2009, with estimated sales of 19,803 copies, Spawn had dropped below Top 100 titles sold monthly to comic shops as reported by Diamond Comic Distributors. As of September 2010, Spawn was ranked at 115 in the top 300 sales figures chart reported by Diamond Comic Distributors. On the day of its release in 2011, issue 200 sold out. This issue featured work by Greg Capullo, David Finch, Michael Golden, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Marc Silvestri, Danny Miki, and Ashley Wood. A second printing was released the next month. It received a negative review from IGN.

Nope. He went down in flames with that version. Studios aren't taking a second risk with him. I like him, but I (1) Wouldn't gamble millions on a B actor again, and (2) Like Foxx better. MJW had that shot at being an A lister, and through many circumstances was denied that.

Michael Jai White is a B movie actor tho and sucks...this is Jamie Foxx 's idea and producer this is supposed to be dark and nightmarish like it's supposed to be like the comics. Spawn is Jamie Foxx favorite superhero.

Dude!?! I loved it the first Spawn movie, especially considering I'm an avid reader of the comics. Michael Jai White's portrayal of Al Simmons was beautiful and did the character Justice, it also didn't hurt that Michael Jai White is also a world known martial arts master. 🤨 Jamie Foxx is going to be playing Al Simmons so what you guys think the character spawn is too dark and needs to be more funny like Deadpool, you better not I swear to God!

Todd MacFarlane has been saying this movie is going to be a much darker Spawn movie and will focus more on the detectives and SPAWN will be this dark character in the shadows more like the HBO animated series.

For its time, it was a good adaptation. It was 'dumbed' down for broader appeal, but still touched most of the bases for the fans of the comic.

Agreed. I always hoped he'd come back to it. I hope Foxx does well in his own right, as long as it does right by the source material and Blum house doesn't inject any kind of Marvel humor into it to be "hip" or "with it" or whatever tf WB thinks our youth say today.

In my opinion that is the true adaptation.
Mammon and Overtkill are NOT allies of Spawn. They are definitely antagonistic characters.

I've seen interviews with Todd. Talking about the movie. He is going for a Jaws like thing. You see spawn in the shadows. It's actually not about the special effects. It's not about the origin story really either They're trying to go for a horror effect. Mars Mars shadows in the background. So special effects of the place where they're not going for.
McFarlane chose Fox himself, there’s a reason for it. Yeah, Jamie es goody but he’s very a talented actor. I believe in him.
John Leguizamo was 10/10 as the Violator. If there is one thing to bring back, it's him! Jamie Fox as Spawn is epic.

The dialogue from Clown is suppose to be inappropriate and non pc. Spawn is non pc. If you've ever read the comics or seen the HBO series you would know this.
I think there are a lot of great enemies that could serve as the main antagonist in the new Spawn movie. Although eventually, I would like them to introduce the multiverse for Image Comics and have Spawn go up against different variations of himself or eventually have Al Simmons become Divine Spawn. Or have his normal form of Spawn fight Toxic Spawn or Omega Spawn, which is one of the more powerful versions. But I think that Omega Spawn or Divine Spawn making an appearance would probably make a lot of Spawn fans happy.
I personally think Daylyt, a hip hop artist with a literal Spawn mask face tattoo. Does the Spawn community know of who I speak of?
I loved MJW for the role. Al Simmons is a tough sun of a gun. I hope they don't make him skimey though.

Spawn is my guilty pleasure movie, but even as a kid I saw its very glaring flaws. As an adult I really want a live action movie that resembles the first 10 issues of the comic with the blood and guts and dark humor. The animated series did it best, I want that adapted into a live action film

Spawn's cape was a great help to support this character and the actor in the movie. The Producer needs to draw from the Comic to help this anti-Hero Also less foam rubber costume. Hopefully the movie uses better special effects.

We all can agree. Michael J White did a great job overly great all the actors in the movies did a spectacular job, but I do agree that the plot of the movie could’ve been better.
Original movie wasn’t horrible. It was fine. Not nearly as edgy as it really should have been but in the time, it was as edgy as it was going to get. Thanks to deadpool studios aren’t afraid to go R rated.
'97 Spawn was GOATED!
Only reason i see why Jamie is picked over MJW is the level of acting. MJW's acting chops are still very one dimensional and close to campy. Jamie has much range obv so i can understand that part, But man the 97 version was DOPE!!! Honestly Snyder would be AMAZING to create the visuals for this.

I mean the movie was cool for it's time. It was by no means a good movie, especially if you were actually a fan of Image Comics and knew how dark the subject matter of Spawn actually was. As campy and "bad" as the movie was, it wasn't a true flop. It made back about twice its budget and has a cult following based on Liguizamos portrayal of the Violator alone.
