    Always awesome to see your videos guys! I was there for the ultra and beast. 12hr 41min ultra/ beast 5hr 47min 13sec freaking sore on the second day....no joke! this was an ass kicker course, those hills reminded me when I did the ultra in Vermont back in 2017. I was passed mile 10 when Ryan Atkins ran past me finishing up on his second lap, dude is a beast. I wish you guys the best and good journey.

    Hey there!!! You and your KZread Channel just inspired me to get back after It and start Running..again....I have lost over 250 lbs in the last 2 years and 325 lbs total, used to weight over 550 lbs at the age of 19. Have spent over a decade figuring out the "Confusion" to obesity and executing. January 2019 I quit drinking alcohol focused on running. I very progressively climbed from a painstaking half mile to 17 miles in just 9 month beatin' that thang up (lazyness). Been very aggressively💪😜💪 Bodybuilding for the last 5 months and completely stoping all cardio minus the one night I did get Lucky👍. Stumbled on this video 📹 and I have been set on FIRE🔥🔥🔥. You have challenged and given me something more to live for. Thank you very much for All of your effort and choice to be a better person. Hopefully I get a chance to smoke you at an upcoming race. 💪😎👍

  • @OCRKings

    @OCRKings

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you my friend!! Ok, great questions. The main difference between the Ultra Beast and the current Ultra is the mileage. Before, you would just do 2 laps of the Beast race around 26 miles total. Now, Spartan has added an additional loop or "spur" to the first lap of the Ultra, usually 4-5 miles. So, on the first lap you're looking at 17-18 miles, and on the second 12-13 miles. The additional mileage adds a new dimension to the race. Furthermore, during the spur, you get hit with 4-5 additional obstacles that you do for lap one only. You still have a drop bin area, and there is a cut off time to leave there before you get a DNF (for us it was 2:30PM). Throughout the course, after 2:30PM there were additional cut-off's at certain obstacles - one was at 5:45PM (about midway on the course), another was at 7:15 (about three quarters of the course), and then finally the ultimate cut-off at 9PM when the course was closed. Hope this helps. Good luck at your Ultra!!! AROO!!

    Great job on the course and footage came out awesome! I am starting to train to do my first Ultra, but haven't signed up yet. What was the cutoff time for the first lap? How much time left you had? Also, how long did you take to complete the whole Ultra? Thank you so much!

  • @OCRKings

    @OCRKings

    5 жыл бұрын

    For Mtn Creek the first cut off was 2:30 PM. By that time you had to be done with lap one and through the transition area. We got there around 1:40 PM. The next cut off was 5:45 PM. You had to be at Olympus (half way through lap 2) by then. Next was 7:15 PM to the Sandbag Carry (about 3/4 of the way through lap 2), and last was the ultimate cut off of 9:00 PM when the race and course was shut down. And for full disclosure, we made it though Lap 1, but then were toast. Sadly we didn't complete the Ultra and thus the silly fire jump footage at the end of the video. Makes me laugh tho. Good luck in your Ultra! Which one are you planning on doing?

    @@OCRKings Thanks for your reply, I love your videos, they help me a lot to prepare for new obstacles ahead. I haven't decide it yet, but I am thinking about Dallas, as I've been told it's one of the easiest terrains, pretty flat. I live in Florida, got my first trifecta last year and I am working on my second one now, but I know I would really need to step up my training if I want to finish an ultra.

    Hoo-Boy this is a Long story Soo... Did My first ever OCR today! It was Denali run the Gauntlet In my home state of CT. It was at East Rock Park. 5k, there was around 15 Obstacles went up East Rock And Back Down so there was a Pretty high Elevation gain(IDK how much) and Like you said there were some Chokepoints In the Woods where everyone had to file a Single-file line during my wave(Wave 2). Here’s what happened, not to mention it was Raining Outside so there was mud to make things more complicated: 1: Prairie dog: Small Industrial Tube had to Craw through, got my foot stuck so I had to Yoink it out 2: Little Giant steps(This was where most of the chokepoints were) we began our climb Here, going up some steps. Pretty much everyone was there so we were slow. (Before the next obstacle) there was a Single giant fallen Tree along one of the trails after that. So that added a extra +1 to make that 16 obstacles. Dodgin Ramen: Single Beam, pool noodles dangling from it, Had to push them out of the way. The first ascent: 2 ladders basically, smaller version of The stairway to Sparta Trek to Basecamp: Basically there were hiking bags set Up and we had to carry one around the statue at the Top of East Rock and drop them off at the other side of it similar to sandbag(They were all same weight) Get over yourself: It was a 5 foot wall similar to any spartan race, Climbed over that, Nearly Ripped off my Tag in the Process(Would’ve been Bad if it fully ripped off) Charlotte’s Web: It was a Net you had to Crawl under. You know how I mentioned it was Raining Outside when I ran? Well when I went into it, it became mud so I got my hands/legs dirty(Did an army Crawl). After that I began my Descent back to the park, even made a Funny Joke to this mate after I came through: Me: Man! That was tough(Talking about how there were the 5 foot wall as well as the Crawl in mud) Man: I guess that was Pretty tough Me: You mean “tough Mudder” Tough? *Both Laugh* Anyway. Tired?(That was the name of the Obstacle) just a Set of tires we had to Step through, Nothin Much. (Between That) Long Descent Down had to watch my step on the Rocks/Roots So I wouldn’t Slip-Up a long the hill. Beam me Up: Single Beam, It goes straight then Up then u Jump Down More Trails after that Deere John: Similar to Tired? Except it was 3 Big Tractor Tires so I did a Balancing act on the Outside of each one Ramp Rope: Ramp Up then Ladder Back Down, there were Ledges of the Ramp so That Helped A LOT Cuz it was slippery there. Stairway to Heaven: Similar to stairway to Sparta except there was spacing in between every single hole and You had to climb back down after you reached the top Haven Hurdles: 3 Roadblock Hurdles, took time on them to Get a Up-And-over. Dumpster Dip: 5ft dumpster filled with water so the bottom Half of me got drenched. But hey, Had to get the Mud off of me at some point That’s it. It was a Fun Race overall.

    Thank you sir! Basically for training, we try to run a lot out in the woods and hills (rather than on the flat roads). We have many of these obstacles build on our own min-course, so we practice those quite a bit too. This way we train to the event. We typically do a long run once a week on a Saturday or Sunday, and do obstacles or a shorter run on Wed nights. We try to workout too in the gear we run the races in, so this way we know how our gear works and feels, leaving no surprises for race day.

I'm thinking of doing the UK version next year having just done the Tough Mudder last week (recovering from injuries at the mo) but planning on training once I've recovered. Can I ask what's this tune called please?

    Looking back at this (as someone who ran the beast here as their first ever race and finished it) I'm never EVER going to forgive the jackass who put the sharpened rocks on the barbed wire crawl. Then again, those first 4 miles while adapting to the humidity was something else too. I also learned to never count on the mile signs as some jerk took out the signs for miles 11 & 12. Although there's no way in hell I'm not doing this again this april 25th.

    We went at it two different ways. I grabbed the rope high up, then threw a leg over trying to reach the raised middle bar in the middle of the deck. I think grabbed the rope higher up and pushed myself backwards onto the box. Damer grabbed the higher knot on the rope with his hands, then clasped the lower knot with his feet. He then stood on the knot and went right up. His is the better technique probably.

Short answer yes, probably in the open waves, which are less competitive, with lots more people, it would be harder to monitor and someone could get away with skipping w/o being caught. The earlier competitive waves, especially the elite waves, no. Better to try and fail than to skip though, no?

  • @OCRKings

    @OCRKings

    3 жыл бұрын

    This was a tough one. I didn't see any food or water up at the top aid station, but I did see a bunch of people in there with those silver emergency blankets trying to get warm. They were being helped by no less than 6 support and safety staff who were going to shuttle them down the mountain either in a truck or on a 4 wheeler. There were hydration locations through ought the course, maybe half a dozen or so? Spartan is usually quite good about providing water. Some of those spots give out energy chews or bananas. As far as what we consumed, the both of us packed around 1.5L of water. Damer takes it easy on the snacks, he consumes something as he feels is needed. I tend to slug something down around every 2 miles on the long runs like this. I prefer gels, Damer likes chews/blocks. We both pack salt tabs too, and the other fav we both have on hand is packets of peanut butter. We take it easy on those, maybe one per run, but to get away from all the sweet stuff and "sugar belly" a switch to something salty is good. The peanut butter has a good deal of protein too. Use sparingly. The last yummy thing we have on the go are Stinger Waffles. One or two of those max per run. It's all about a tradeoff between caloric needs and lugging a bunch of stuff around. If we can keep that stuff to a pound and a half or less (sans water), we're good to go. I'd say Damer consumes 500-700 calories on a long run like this per lap, I do more like 1000 or so. Hope this helps, Mack.
