    Sgt Mobuto? It's possible he may have been an Orion, but its likely that Johnson would have known, especially if they had the kind of bond that Spartans do. Halo: The Flood appears to say that the body was too mangled for the flood infection forms to use. The augmentations don't appear to make you invulnerable to flood takeover, just unappealing to the infection forms. Like a bad apple. If you're hungry enough you might just still eat it. And we have no idea about spores. MC was safe in his armour due to the filtration systems. Thr UNSC are terrified of the concept of a Spartan being infected and authorise the use of tactical nuclear weapons in the event it happens.

    Fuck, how sick would it be if Halo made a Sgt. Johnson spinoff game that was based off his early years! Like start it off when he was a fresh recruit, then have it progress into how he got chosen for Spartan 1 augs, then the rest of the game would be about his various missions according to the lore! Then the ending would fit perfectly into the start of Halo CE!! IDK bout you guys but I think it could be fuckin epic if done right, not to mention great for the prequel story to CE lore. The genetics parts of Halsey's journal (3:50) are technobabble, so it's hard to know what is meant to be said. I think that because of this, some of the comments on it are off the mark. For example, what does "subminimal target change" even mean. It's an example of jargon being used to sound fancy, but the point of jargon is meant to clarify and specify, which this doesn't do. It should say something like "phenotypic changes were insignificant compared to normal variation". Also, no idea why immune reactions to the products of inserted genes would cause "rampant, irreversible genetic fragmentation" and not just the standard conditions associated with auto-immune diseases. Immunity attacks gene products, not genes. The Refinement section is also a bit bonkers. If you're going to alter the structure of DNA to make it more malleable/robust, then it's no longer DNA, and whatever change you make to the structure will likely influence many other DNA-interacting systems, to the point that regulatory proteins can't bind and RNA polymerase can't produce messenger RNA for example. In other words, sufficiently different DNA becomes what is termed "orthogonal" and cannot be "read" by the normal cellular machinery. The cell is then blind to the information in the new genes, missing the whole point of inserting it. Using L-DNA is a prime example of this. To amplify and express it, you would need mirror-image proteins, that in turn need mirror image ribosomes, mirror image amino acids, coded for by mirror image genes etc etc. You're basically going to need a whole mirror image metabolism on top of the normal stereochemistry. Either that, or completely design proteins from scratch that are themselves of the natural "handedness", but can perform catalysis on L-DNA. This is hard. Very hard. And also pointless, because once you have the enzymes that can handle L-DNA, it loses the advantage of enzymatic stability because you just made and exposed it to enzymes that can interact with it. (if you want L-DNA error proofreading and repair, you have to have L-DNA nuclease activity). The "L-DNA hydroxyl re-polymerase" part sounded to me like the plan was to enzymatically produce gene inserts made of L-DNA, using an enzyme called "L-DNA hydroxyl re-polymerase" (I would drop the re-prefix), and then insert single copies of the L-DNA within the D-DNA genome. I have no idea what the hydroxyl refers to (again, clarity matters, but not in technobabble :D ), but to me it most likely refers to the L-DNA. Maybe it's 2' hydroxylated so it's actually L-RNA? I doubt it has anything to do with hydroxylating agents to kill cells like the video suggests. Although the insane idea to selectively kill cells that did not carry the inserts could explain the failure, because gene therapy that doesn't deliver the insert to enough cells combined with selection against the normal genome would lead to massive cell death, so the delivery method would need to be extremely efficient. They shouldn't start with prepubescent children, but with zygotes. The most outlandish interpretation of this paragraph is that they intended to change the whole genome from D-DNA to L-DNA, but I hope that's not what they meant because that is impossible. I did my PhD on designing a polymerase to make a left handed DNA analog (with xylose instead of ribose), and so I know how hard all this would be :D I managed to improve a DNA polymerase so it doesn't stall on just two unnatural nucleotide letters, but can do at least five, if you space them well enough. And nowhere near the rate of normal DNA replication.

    In addition to his augmentations, physical conditioning, and his time in slip space, it might also be worth considering that perhaps one reason for Johnson's youthful appearance is because of his ethnicity. It is not uncommon for people of African ancestry to appear 10-20yrs younger than their actual age (when compared to persons of other races at the same age). More melanin means increased natural protection from harmful UV. Less degradation results in a more youthful appearance. As the saying goes, "Black don't crack."

    Man we seriously need a Contact Harvest game. Wouldn't even have to play as SGT Johnson, I'd rather just be a marine along side his experience during the Harvest conflict. If it was written just like or around the conflict (like how Reach changed) I'd love it. In fact it surprises me we didn't get a game around the first contact. That sh*t would be amazing. There's so much lore the Halo series could make a game out of that it's verging on annoying that they don't use those stories to build a game around. But, at least we got Halo: Reach and ODST. You'd think they'd see the success of both those games and go in on more extended lore.

    I think these suggestions fit well - they seem to be a good cross between purely pragmatic upgrades and actually pushing the boat out. If you ask me, the Orion augmentations were not the very pinnacle of what could be done at the time, rather what they thought they could get away with, and given that Johnson was one of the only Orions to actually survive more than a few years shows that they couldn't quite get away with what they thought they could. One thing though, would these augmentations be enough to explain why Johnson couldn't get (easily) infected by the Flood? (aside from his sheer god-level charisma)

    I know you briefly touched on this in your Sgt. Johnson video. But I was wondering if you had any speculation about what augmentation/augmentations would have given Johnson his slight immunity to the flood? I can't imagine that Johnson was 100% immune to infection, as well as the fact that if I recall correctly the flood form that tried to infect him had just woken up from stasis so it wasn't operating at it's full capacity.

    If I remember correctly from the book lore, Johnson survived the infection form because it was unable to attach to the normal neural pathways to take over a host body due to the drugs pumped into Johnson during Orion. Thus Johnson being able to rip the infection form off of him and successfully escape. That infection form also ended up giving Johnson the slight healing factor seen moving forward as it was not actually a result of the genetic alteration per the information Halsey gives John about Johnson after their return to Reach. The first 3 original books in the Halo lore deal with this info as I believe most Orion candidates either died or went insane from the experimentation.

    While this was still highly advanced for the time I find it odd how someone like Sgt. Johnson didn't have the physical and mental fortification to fight off at least Jackals and possibly the Elites in combat. At best it sounds like a Spartan 1, or Orion augment candidate, couldn't meet that requirement or hope 🤔. However there probably should've been essentially super human augmentations like this before the Human-Covenant War at least in experimentation. I'm also surprised that he didn't get a promotion for his long years of service and successful mission records. It was also surprising to find out that outside of cryo augmented humans like the Orions and later Spartans variations aged slower than normal, mostly because the Spartan IIIs had accelerated aging as a part of their development. This also makes me wonder if ODSTs were always just nearly fearless humans sent into battle or were they at all cybernetically and/or biochemically enchanced at all similar to the Orions? And while the Orions and Spartan IIs were partially failure projects before the eventual Spartan IIIs and IVs, if the UNSC continued to develope the projects further? Also not to take it into a more Warhammer direction but I'm surprised that they didn't try to add an extra organs like a third lung or a secondary heart, as far as I know about the augmentation process. Also while I don't know about cybernetic enhancements there have definitely or at least been a hint at biochemical ones in the stories of the Halo Legends movie, which had at least 6 to maybe 8 different tales created from or inspired by the Halo series including a breakdown of humanity's evolution as a species, various cultures and eventually a spacefarring society. One of the stories involved a klutzy Spartan 1337 who fell out of a Pelican dropship in which Spartan 117 himself and the A.I. Cortana were aboard, likely executing some sort of mission. The only occupants on the world were young human children that domesticated a dinosaur looking creature and two teenagers (both resembling Dragon Ball Z characters). After a cyber enhanced Brute was deployed on that planet as part of an experimental test by what seemed like a mid level or High Prophet (possibly the Prophet of Regret himself since he enacted several plans with mixed results). Spartan 1337 was barely able to fight him alone, so the two teens backed him up and were at least able to moderately keep it at bay with their agility and reflexes in every attack. Spartan 1337 was mostly only able to throw heavy punches at the Brute. But even with the 3 of them working together the battle seemed nearly lost. Until the A.I. of a crashed ship that the 5 adolescents called "Mama" aided them by opening up a rift in space time and shooting one of the downed frigate's escape pods at the Brute while it was in mid-air and likely about to self destruct from it's exoskeleton being damaged or just an overheating malfunction. The pod and portal into hyperspace together removed the Brute from their planet, lost to the stars. The A.I. was probably from a military escort of civilians that crash landed or was shot down and the children were biochemically altered to better survive the planet they were on. But even then, the augmentation was for ages 13 and up, so the smaller children likely didn't have any yet. I'd like to think that their "Mama" or caretaker A.I. knew what she was doing to great effect. Since the ship they were on could've been any number of things.Those kids could've been Dr. Halsey's next candidates for the Spartan III program. Or the ship was a medical frigate, which was why all it could do was open up a slipspace gate and shoot an escape pod having little to no weapons, and the children were given medically sanctioned augmentations by whomever was the last ranking officer, possibly part of an experimental procedure. And the A.I. taking on a motherly role since it was originally a medical assistant program. But who can really say for sure? Cortana sensed her presence and decided to leave her be with the children on that isolated world away from the war, especially since she was an older model so I think being marooned there was almost like a retirement. Sorry for going into all of that, my main point was that the 2 Teens were basically jumping around a Brute with cyborg augments and a fully grown Spartan could barely keep up with them. Besides having an obvious grasp of combat likely in part from living on a world with Dinosaur-like fauna and learning to defend themselves and others, they seemed to have been biologically upgraded. And it made me wonder if they could pass on those traits to their children or if the A.I. who shepherded them handled everything herself? Mostly because of the worry of Rampancy, with the lifespan of most A.I. being about 7 years. Unless this "Mama" did what Governor Sloan had of the Meridian colony, sacrificing parts of himself to preserve a greater whole, including his holo projection resolution making him appear less human and less physically whole. That way she could keep watching over her children for about 10-11 years, enough time for the eldest of them to reach adulthood before her inevitable shutdown or system-wide malfunction into oblivion. And it makes me wonder how many other kids could be born (or un-podded if they were in cryo-sleep) that might be biochemically or gene augmented by then?

    ODSTs should have Spartan 1 augs that are chemically administered (like spartan 3's) and SPI armor camouflage capability, in addition to their base armor and training. The Orion Project has too much potential- especially when compared alongside regular humans- to just let go.

    well also im not sure what the reason was factually, but it was either from the augmentation or something that was the reason he survived the flood attack. they go mildly in detail about that as well as how he made it off the first halo in halo: first strike, cause it literally starts right where the game ends and chief just kept telling cortana to scan for survivors and eventually find out theres a pelican drifting with a few marines, Johnson included and chief freaked on him for a bit cause he saw him get fucked up by the flood in the helmet recording. he also found linda in a ejected cryo tube and saved it. they later make it back to a now gassed reach and find halsey and she actually starts "fixing" and rehabilitates linda back for duty.

    @@boynamedgoo117 I know all of that, which is why I mentioned it. ONI made up the Boren's Syndrome cover to hide that Johnson was an Orion Project member. The augmentations he received are what prevented his infection. Though the Flood did ramp up his regenerative abilities.

  • @boynamedgoo117

    Honestly that I didn't know lol I didn't know oni made up the borens syndrome part. It was a big moral conundrum for chief when Halsey told him about it and the whole thing was if he was to relay the report to oni of how Johnson survived a flood attack they'd basically kill him to biop him to figure out how to apply it for flood survival. But my point being his healing factor wasn't enhanced by the flood attack but the augmentation was the reason he survived. Lol. But yeah I didn't know it was another oni cover up. I guess things have indeed changed under 343 from where Bungie and the books started.

    @FlynnHTD117 Yeah, they made it up to cover up his involvement in the Orion Project. And it actually did enhance his healing abilities. Not significantly, but it did. I also think that Halsey didn't tell the Chief about Johnson being a Spartan-I because that program was even more classified than the Spartan-II program. She clearly knew about it as she used it as study material for her own program.

  • @boynamedgoo117

    @boynamedgoo117

    Yeah but I feel like in the situation Halsey, chief, and reach was in at the time of first strike would have been as good a time as any to inform chief and the reader about how special and awesome Johnson was that we already saw him as. But with that in mind (that Johnson was a Orion survivor) it's just kinda fucked up of Halsey to go along with the issue of what to do with the info of Johnson's seemingly immunity to flood infection with chief cause he was screwed up about his moral obligations and which side to lean with what to do with the info, between discarding it to save Johnson's life from being biopsied and death sentence or to go through with it to save humanity and give them a fighting chance against the flood. The whole concept of sacrificing the few for the many. Kill one life to save billions. So the fact I didn't know that at the time of reading first strike growing up makes oni and Halsey even more screwed up to me lol. But thank you for enlightening me with new info lol.

    Installation00 forgot to mention the main reason why Johnson didn't seem to age......BLACK DONT CRACK! I've known 90 year old black men in South Carolina that make some 40 yr old other ethnicities look old. As well Johnson descends from Keanu Reeves....it's where some of the badassery good looks and charm come from. I would agree he probably only spent 10 years in cryo. FTL travel is weird....some ships can travel to different star systems in weeks whilst others can take months for the same trip. So I would say some trips he may have only been asleep for a few weeks but that does compound. 10 total years during over 50 years of service does somewhat compute. I would really love to see a live action Contact Harvest. I feel like if they chose someone like Idris Elba whom is nearing his 50s but still looks like he's in his early 30s to play Johnson with a direct book to script sceenplay......whoa buddy I need to slow it down. That would definitely make up for the supposed failed Halo TV show on paramount....haven't seen it don't know.

    So uh, telomeres don't have anything to do with what we generally associate with signs of aging, i.e. grey hair, wrinkles, frailty. That's all due to a myriad of other things. Case in point, mice with the gene for telomerase knocked out such that they don't have telomeres didn't age rapidly they just died quickly. And the opposite experiment, where mice had telomerase active in *all* cells constantly such that their telomeres never degraded aged normally and died at the normal age. We don't die from our telomeres running out. Yet, anyway. It may be a limit after extreme life extension technology exists, but not now. Yes, they shorten with age but do not cause aging. I love you 00 but it's cringy as a biochemist watching someone with expertise in a different field present something you know in an excellent and convincing manner but be, well, completely wrong. I believe you have previously said you have training in materials science, and believe me, if I did a video in this much detail involving materials science (or physics in general, frankly) I'd almost certainly make a mistake too, and also not be nearly as convincing or entertaining while I did it.
