Spanish Subjunctive 3 Structures & Phrases You Need To Know | HOLA SPANISH | BRENDA ROMANIELLO
Spanish Subjunctive is confusing and difficult for many people because it's hard to to know when or how to use it in Spanish. That's why I've prepared this video lesson where I explain to you how to use the Spanish subjunctive. You'll also learn some of the most common phrases that trigger or required the subjunctive and we'll see many examples of everyday use.
The Spanish subjunctive is the mood of subjectivity, emotions, thoughts and hypotheses. We use the subjunctive in Spanish to give opinions, indirect orders, to express emotions or doubt. The word subjunctive comes from "subject" or "subjectivity" because we can say that what is being said is expressed from the speaker's point of view, we place emphasis on the subject’s perspective, we know that what it’s being said is from the view point of the person performing the action.
The subjunctive mood can be a bit difficult to understand, especially for English speakers because this mood does not exist, in this language (which doesn’t mean there aren’t structures that are used with the same meaning and purpose). So, in order to understand this easily, I’d like to recommend that you study and learn when to use the subjunctive in Spanish. Today we'll focus on one specific use of the Spanish subjunctive, then I"ll give you 3 structures that always require subjunctive in Spanish and lastly we'll have a look at some phrases and examples.

Ojala comes from the Arabic word "Inshallah" - "if God wills" or "God willing"

It is good to translate in english but for me i prefer if all the class is in spanish and you put subtitles becuase it is a practice also for us hearing you explain and using words in spanish since some spanish words could be new and we can benefit from it as a new vocabulary maybe thank you i am a big fan you are doing a great job really it’s just an opinion of mine

Brenda, en la ultima oración por que no usas el verbo creer en el subuntivo “creas”. ¿”crees” es el modo indicativo, no? Gracias para sus leciones.
The subjunctive mood does exist in English, but a lot of native speakers don't seem to use it that often. For example: "If I were rich, I'd travel the world" is subjunctive, but a lot of native English speakers these days seem to say "if I was" instead of "if I were". Most English speakers, however, do use the subjunctive in the phrase "if I were you". I don't really hear anyone say "if I was you".

There are instances like the ones you describe, but what I mean is there is not a mood with a specific conjugation and phrases that trigger or require the use of the subjunctive in English, with different clauses, etc to the extent that we use it in Spanish and this is why it's so hard to master in the Spanish language, especially for English speakers. Though definitely not impossible. For sure examples like those help us understand it better. So, thank you for your input and examples. From my understanding and after years of studying English grammar at uni, you can say 'if I was you' if you mean 'If I was in your shoes, in your position' which is a possibility (in the sense I may at some point experience what you're experiencing right now), and 'if I were you' is a hypothetical because I could never actually 'be' you. The same as if you say for example 'If I won the lottery' and 'If I win the lottery', in the former it's a hypothetical situation, in the later you bought a ticket so it's actually a possibility, etc. Oh I love talking about this. I'm sorry about the long reply. Thank you for watching the lesson and I'll be more careful of how I convey this in future videos about the Spanish subjunctive.

@@HolaSpanish Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure that "If I was you" is ever correct because I'll never be you. Even if I end up in your position at some point, currently it's still a hypothetical. I could very well be wrong about that, though. I never studied English. I just have a fascination with languages and etymology, which is why I'm watching videos about learning Spanish :-) My Spanish tutor doesn't allow me to speak English in our lessons, so I need to improve :-DDD Being a native English speaker, I can tell you that our grammar is usually worse than non-native speakers. Thanks for the awesome videos! :-D

It’s an adjustment for me as a native English speaker, having to conjugate the verbs differently in the present tense. But it is interesting and I think is a way of adding context and specificity in the Spanish language.
I know this video is a little older, but I'm interested in the difference between lo and la in phrases like "la pasamos bien". Is there a rule, or is this regional? Thanks for your time! Your videos are fantastic!

There are other trigger words that trigger the subjunctive too such as Dudo que, Sospecho que, Creo que, Lo posible que, and etc. However, most common ones are Espero que and Deseo que. Do you know if 'Ojala' is in first person, or is it just a foreign loan word into Spanish? Thank you!

Hola, Allan, según la RAE, la palabra "Ojalá" es una interjección, también algunos consideran un adverbio de duda, por lo tanto no tiene género ni una persona en específico.
El subjuntivo se usa mas en cláusulas dependentes. The subjunctive is used mostly in subordinate clauses.

te deseo means I wish to you. Para 'espero que' no necesitamos 'te' porque queremos decir I hope something, no I hope to you. Te es el pronombre de objeto directo 'to you'.

Se usa la por una palabla feminino sin embargo lo en una palabra masculino
Yo quiero su lectura.
Para clarificar, "a wish", el sustantivo en inglés es algo más específico. Significa un pedido de un deseo durante un ritual o en un fuente con una moneda (algo de cualquiera superstición), o de algo magical como un genio. Decir "I wish you weren't so rude" no es un "wish" verdadero en inglés. Es un "desire" o quiza "a want".
Ojalá que termine el transtorno de la pandemia de Covid-19 y la vida de la gente pueda volver a ser normal.
Ojala would have the meaning of "God Willing" or there abouts, I would think

Es parecido. "Ojalá" es una palabra que utilizamos para deseos. Ejemplo: Ojalá que mi abuela se recupere lo antes posible. Deseo que mi abuela se recupere lo antes posible.
