Right on man. I spent about two hours staying up too late playing with this. I always thought Gary was tremendously underrated and I can do a bit of the Tony at the same time so, will work up and post at some point but, I've been messing with your version a bit and I thank you for the fantastic blue print. Fun song to play and sing. You nailed the Em form, that's what makes it.

Finally decided to learn this beautiful tune and found your tutorial. The Cm is correct, I believe, or least it works for me. Played along with the suggested live recording and although not exactly like the record, close enough to fool my little audience of three. Thank you.

Excellent and very accurate as far as I can see from watching the live acoustic performance. That Em9(?) in the intro is a killer but it does sound right. Not so important in the verse.

Great thank you I think the chord you were after may be ebm7 flat 5. You are playing the bm7 flat 5 just before so it's up 3 frets. Anyway if it works great and thanks so much again ☺️

Hey Shara, I think the chord he was looking for was actually Ebmaj9 (x6576x). To my ear there is no Bm7b5, just Bm7, in the entire song. The chords in the intro are G, E7sus2, Cmaj9, Bm7. IMO what georgiarose got right that everyone else has wrong is the C add 4/E (033010) not F add 9. When I heard that it was a "wow". But I 100% agree this is a great cover of one of the underrated ballads of the 80's. I had actually forgotten all about True until I heard it on the Sirius XM 80's channel. And instantly thought "I've got to learn that". But it's best to have a rhythm guitaist playing those stab chords (xxx11 12 10,) (xxx16 15 14) while the lead guitar plays the main melody. So much guitar to play, so little time......

HI Totally right I was getting my names totally wrong. It's as you have it and the chord I was suggesting is not the bm7 flat 5 either I meant the cmaj7 9. So x3243 played on the lyric 'always in time' in the first verse. Lemme know what you think. Great song for busking!

It's a Em9 and a Cmaj9 in the intro. Cadd4 the nice chord after the Am7 flourish. "Never in time" you use Cm7. It's right, but Eb (C bar chord in 3rd fret) is better because you get the Eb bass note on the 5th string, making a nice run from G, B, C, Eb. Cm7 works because it's the relative minor, but musically inferior at that point in the song.

I agree with this analysis. I wouldn't say that the Cm7 is "right", but it "works" as hvmotu explained. I see a lot of people make this mistake when trying to figure out songs. They often recognize that it sounds a little "off" but can't quite put their finger on why, just as in this video. In the Songbook video that this tutorial is referring to, the chord Kemp plays is an EbMaj9 which is an easy slide up from the CMaj9. Regarding the Cadd4, in the context of the original song I believe it is actually an Fmaj9, but Cadd9 has the same notes minus the A and makes for a much easier transition.
