Spal Radiator Fan vs cheap ripoff Ebay fan

Spal VA08-AP71/LL-53S 14" Blower fan, vs an eBay fan advertised as 220W... but after testing only drew 85W. Huge difference in build quality of the Spal fan vs the eBay fan, which was wobbly and unbalanced.
Radiator is from a Land Rover discovery 300TDi

something that you did not catch he never shows what the fan is really connected to. he only shows luging the little power supply that looks to be connected to the ohm meter . now a fan that size ulls about 14amps there's no way that little power supply would have powered a fan that big the biggest power supply i ever seen only puts out 3amps like i said he does not show where does he connect the fans to

Ric S hi! I used an AC to DC power supply, 12v 20A. I can dig the power supply out to give you a part number if needed but if you Google RWS300B12 , a very similar one will come up. I wouldn't be surprised if some desktop computer power supplies can provide enough current on the 12v rail if you wanted a cheaper approach! Cheers

I don't like any aftermarket fans. It takes time but if you go to a salvage yard and get an oe fan you'll be good they crank serious air. My S10 has a Chevy traverse Duel setup in the summer with AC on its running 50% power and never gets got. It also has a thermostatic switch that rarely comes on set to 100% power for those times I'm not using AC and I'm stuck in traffic. My chevelle has a 16 jeep renegade single fan. Fits my rad core perfectly runs 50% power constant and 100% at 210 Deg rarely does 100% kick in.

Retrogamer1010 agreed! There are very few salvage yards where I live, there are car breakers yards but you're not allowed to just browse around the cars like we used to be able to do 10 years or so ago :( I needed a push fan as there was no room at all behind my rad, and I couldn't find any vehicles with push fans on eBay etc. I'm glad I splashed out on the aftermarket one as it has been a godsend and times, but still wish I could have found a scrap car fan! For anyone reading this... Vauxhall/Corsa D fans are HUGE, like 16" (pull)

Roger Flores hi! You'll need a power supply with a current output nearer to 15 amps to power most fans. I have a small fan which 'only' needs 7a to run. Have you looked at computer power supplies? Some of those can make a good amount of current on their 12v output. They are commonly used to power heated beds on 3d printers so maybe search Google for them. My power supply is very similar to RWS300B12 if you Google it

Compare them how much amp draw for each motor. Also compare the type of blade they use. If the fan blade uses more PITCH, then the fan will push/pull more air at a specific voltage/amps/RPM and watts. The first fan you shown probably was using a straight and less pitch fan blades, thus, the motor and blade will spin so high that creates a lot of noise but less airflow. The SPAL fan you have has a different type of fan blade which is called Scimitar Fan Blade with more pitch, hence, it is pushing/pulling a lot more air.

I noticed the eBay fan is a straight blade while the Spal is a curved blade. Curved blade fans have a higher CFM rating in general (nearly double). It would be better to compare apples to apples. I used a 14" curved blade eBay fan on my condenser for about two months and it blew an enormous amount of air. Only reason I took it off was because I got new mounts for the stock fan.

The s blade Spal will push a lot more air than the ebay fan because the ebay fan is not a s blade design. You can get cheap s blade fans which are better, but still not as good as the Spal but are way way cheaper than the Spal. If you need a cheap and powerful dc motor, the radiator fan motor is hard to beat, easy to drive, easy to mount, sealed, reliable , quiet and easy to attach pulleys belts etc..

Wait until you try one of the bad ass Volvo fans.. 4300 cfm! Really super close to the king the Mk viii Ford fan, but its 18" vs the 16" Volvo. They are 2 speed fan also, they make use of a nice dual relay to control it. I bought 2 for 30 bucks each from the local junk yard out of Volvo 850's. Got another on a best offer on ebay for 125 for a bnib oem Siemens fan. Dont buy the aftermarket Volvo fans on ebay, they are not balanced and are junk, there is no comparison vs the real Volvo in cfm output. I have 2 on my '03 Silverado, the fans only kick on high when the a/c is on, which I might add the fans cool the condenser down big time and it blows colder.. They do pull some huge amps @ start up then settle to around 26ish or so @ 13.8v running.. There really is no better electric fan.

I would probly buy one for air cooled engine modification because they are so robust looking and do exactly what they say they're going to do.
