The News Channel couldn't even follow through with the complete landing because they were too anxious to get to sports!!! How the heck is sports more exciting and important than the completion of a mission of human engineering feats and ambition!?!? This is why I prefer NASA livestreams. But an awesome landing and incredible mission.

+Joe N. In fairness these tv stations and shows cater mostly to what the public will watch and tune in for. Since that is a fact the blame falls on the people. Another good example would be so many complaining of the current shitty state of music that we hear on major platforms. They are simply playing what people will tune in and listen to so again that falls on the general public as their fault. Actually there is still great music being made every day.

Jay Smooth Funny enough, the whole music debate is something I am handling on a separate thread on KZread xD.

This made me cry. I watched so many landings like this when I was a kid back in the 90s. The shuttle was a very problematic design, but it was what I grew up with. I guess you could argue that the fact that we made such a pants-on-head idea work at all was a tribute to what we can do when we try.

They should have come up with a design where the orbitor was mounted on top of the fuel tank and srb’s, as opposed to being attached to the side. That would have solved a lot of problems on launch.

This is one of the fondest memories I have from my childhood. My dad packed us kids up in the old Vega and we went to see the landing at Edward's Airforce Base. We also seen it leave on the back of the 747.

This is how all of the broadcasts once were. Always drove me crazy. NASA commentators and radio traffic explained what was happening but the local news cruds always talked over them so the entire audio is a jumbled mess with little relevant information. Thank God SpaceX has changed the way these events are covered.

I know it's an old post but must disagree. While not disparaging the Shuttle, nothing in my opinion compares to Apollo 11. Only 66 years after flight was mastered, two Americans walked on the moon carried by an American space craft and planted an American flag. Picked up by a man orbiting the moon with the spacecraft and all were brought home safely. Did it six more times after that. 240,000 miles into deep space as opposed to 200. Over 1000 times more distance.

Ever since 9-11 Every news station feels the need to cover 50 percent of the viewing screen with their crappy logos and information blocking our view to this beautiful flight. Morons!

I was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX in 1982 when Columbia had to land at White Sands. I just happened to be outside at the right time to see it being ferried over the Franklin Mountains on the 747 on its way back to Florida. That is a sight I will never forget.

That and the filming of "Lone Wolf McQuade" - LOL. That was also going on when I was there but seeing the shuttle being ferried was a lot more exciting. Wish I could have been able to go out to White Sands and actually see it land.

I was in the army at Edwards afb during these landings until a bad weather day at Edwards and the landing site was changed to white sands. I still remember the shuttle nose popping back up after the main landing gear set down and I said "whoa!"

That footage reminds me of watching Space Shuttle Enterprise when it was being tested, and watching live landings of Space Shuttle Columbia in the early '80s. Back when the shuttle was a brand-new thing and we hadn't seen anything like it.

I spent hours reading books about this stuff when I was supposed to be asleep because the bus was going to be there in four hours. Only kid who slept through recess in kindergarten. Worth it.

Twenty some years ago I was in a field, heard a low flying plane and saw the Space Shuttle piggybacked to a 747. WOW ! , I did not know this was done and could not believe my eyes. Seem to me to be a bigger technological challenge than putting it in orbit. Respect to the 747 pilot.

Good old memories. I took a week off in March I think it was 2003 for bike week in Daytona. Towed my '72 Triumph Daytona down there for the event. Hooked up with my brother who lives in Tallahassee and we stayed in a hotel in St. Augustine. I set my alarm for 6am at the hotel to catch the launch. From almost exactly 100 miles away is was a clear shot to the Cape to witness the launch. I'll never forget it. Later on that week when we got back to Tallahassee, we got to see the Shuttle before that launch come flying back by on the back of a 747. It circled at last two times around downtown Tallahassee. That I'll also never forget. Seeing that configuration flying so slow seemed like it should drop out of the sky. It was almost as impressive in some ways, but more impressive in others as it was to seeing the launch itself.

The space shuttle is still the most incredible thing humanity has ever done. We literally shoot a plane into space and land it without any engines. Not to mention the fact that it looks friggin NOICE!!!

Too bad they have all that crap on the screen.

Still one of the most iconic man - made machines.

I was the Tracking Radar Specialist that tracked all Shuttle missions and cover their landings at Edwards Air Force Base. I worked for NASA on Vandenburg Air Force Base's, Western Test Range. The audio that they could have let play would really give you the truest insights, I am even on tape during this time with Shuttle Control Houston, who' running things. We missed a great deal on this broadcast.

I watched the launch from this mission and it was one of the highlights of my life. You don’t understand how unbelievably powerful these machines are until you feel them rattle your insides from 3 miles away. EDIT: these are incredibly aviation-literate newscasters. He referred to the wingtip vortices and she said “landing gear”…that’s a nice change of pace from the usual “oooo, look at those contrails!” or “the wheels are down!” that you expect to hear from any given news team.

i think this is from the Bakersfield NBC affiliate, so they probably covered all the landings at Edwards

I remembered looking outside my window and seeing the space shuttle coming down and hearing and feeling two sonic booms it was crazy but amazing !

Reporters: its all about THEM. Ron Burgundys in every one of them. Shut up and let the story say everything that needs to be said.

Awsome! Fun fact the landing gear on the shuttle are spring loaded, not hydraulically actuated like a normal airplanes gear. This was to save weight. They can not be raised after they are lowered.

The gear is released by an hydraulic latch and the spring pulls them down. During normal maintenance, the gear was lowered and retracted many times. .

+jrocket73 I think he means that the landing gear can not be retracted while in flight. After they are deployed in air, they can only be retracted back in by the mechanics.

I've watched it come in many times from Orlando and once from the Cape. Yes, this is a great landing video. Cool when he pulls some g in the turns and you see the tips condense out some vortices.

this is not a space shuttle it is a con, it doesnt go into space because earth is an enclosed system, watch when the so called shuttle takes off it doesnt go straight up it goes up and then sideways and flies away from the observer not into space and all those dumb people think its going into space, nasa has you all by the balls, Bill Nye from nasa even admitted earth is in an enclosed system there is nowhere to go its an enclosed system, it has to be how would we be able to live here if all the oxygen escaped into so called space?? they telling us they are showing us but us the dumb people just do get it, so they will keep fucking us with absolute BS!

@@kokaboba actually, someone without a very similar belief to this troll pointed out how the atmosphere would get sucked away because of the vacuum of space. it would get sucked away, but because there's a gradient of pressure from the surface to the edge of the atmosphere, there's not enough pressure at the top to allow the other oxygen to push it away. gravity does keep it on earth, just not directly

Having 2 commentators , one interrupting other is better than having just a one with some quiet moments so we could watch for ourselves without being explained what we are watching every second of the footage.

That’s cool. I would probably use this in stuff if there want the giant news thing right in the middle.

my husband and I lived in Mojave California and would get a nice view of the shuttle flying over to land at Edwards AFB.

Phạm Thọ those astronauts knew the risk involved and accepted that it might happen and still loved their jobs, it doesn't make it any less tragic and awful but accidents happen in all aspects of life. Think of all the people that die every year fighting battles that have been produced by their governments when it could be avoided, the shuttle programme was the future, it was a step forward for mankind and a great cause. If we forever lived in fear of death then we would never achieve anything and just box ourselves into padded rooms. Stop ruining this spectacular pastime and don't be so naive.

Pham Tho, I know how many astronauts have dies however as Nazanin Jahanshahi said, they all knew what they were getting into and understood the risks.. and took the plunge knowing those risks because they were brave spirits that wanted to become a part of history and move beyond the horizons of the average person! I was simply commenting on why I like this vid.. so I want to draw it back to being simple and refer now to my primary comment. It was simply an observation of the landing, not an opening to debate anything.

My parents took us to see the Columbia land at Edwards AFB twice when I was a kid. STS-1 on 14 April 1981 and STS-4 on 4 July 1982. Both events were roaring successes with huge crowds of people: the first one was the very first shuttle landing, and the second was a great way to spend part of an Independence Day.

Such a majestic beauty! And the skill with which the pilot lands it (along with the massive pressure of knowing there are no second chances) is mind-blowing to me! These guys truly did have the Right Stuff!

I wanted the news anchor to shut his trap and let us hear the shuttle pilots and the controllers communicating. The footage was terrific; my only complaint is that the news station kept their freaking "logo line" across the bottom the entire time.

Man I love living in Florida. As a kid, I would always run outside to hear the sonic boom as the shuttle flew overhead on its return. I live on the west coast of Florida, just opposite of Miami and we could always hear it.

Those where the days, amazingly beautiful Space craft! I wish now that I'd seen a launch or landing!! Truly epic!!!! Fair winds!

I wish everyone could have witnessed a launch and landing. A cool part of my old job was to walk up to the orbiter about 20 minutes after landing to look at a thermal seal component just behind the nose cap. The vehicle was still hot to the touch with the smell of outgassing RTV in the air. It was a fantastic experience.

LOVE THIS.

I just realized that they made the nose gear shorter than the main gear so that the wing was angled down once on the ground which would cause it to slow down faster.

I've seen the shuttle twice. Although on top of a 747. Once in San Antonio and at ft Bliss, Biggs army airfield. Both amazing sights! The first being in San Antonio. I was at work and said to a co worker, " it would be cool to see it coming in for refueling". A short time later, I seen a plane coming in that looked different. Low and behold, it was the 747 with the shuttle on top. Amazing!!! When I was stationed at Ft Bliss, it made a stop there to refuel because of bad weather, I later learned.

You don't even see skilled pilots landing planes that well.. that pilot has some SERIOUS skills

Gorgeous. It’s bittersweet, too, haunted by the memory of its two sister ships that never had a final touchdown.

I would always listen for the double sonic booms when they landed at Edwards AFB. Sometimes it was barely audible and others were very loud. On the "Return to Flight Mission" STS-119 or close to it, a few hours after undocking their orbits took them over my residence before sunrise. I was able to see both of them less than a minute apart which was kind of cool.

Love the fact, that the wings of the shuttle are only for the last 3 minutes of the mission.

I, for one, am glad it was there. I never could have figured out the "Breaking News - Shuttle Landing" without it.

I would stay home from high school on shuttle launch days and be glued to the NASA channel to watch them launch. I miss the shuttle program

Pure engineering and balls of steel. Loved it.

Wow the newscaster did mention about the vortex flow which mean he knows something about air flight.

For all the complaints about him talking too much, he did actually sound like he knew what he was talking about, which is a rarity.

My farther-in-law, Lawrence, worked as an engineer for Rockwell in the design of the hydraulic systems on the Shuttle. Whew,, that was back in the mid seventies until he went to work for Northrup. Same responsibilities on the Stealth Bomber. Every time I see them fly, I think of him and admire him. He passed away in 2010. Quite a legacy.

I didnt think the commentary was too bad. The facts about the Florida and 747 was interesting.

Damn, I wanted to hear the sports.

I lived in Phoenix during one of the Edwards landings. Was awakened by a loud double Sonic boom as it passed over Arizona, turned on the TV and it was already on final approach to Edwards.

Was there any particular reason why the 'Breaking News' banner had to be so conspicuous and intrusive? Typical of dumb ass American TV networks.

That was great footage.Except for the massive graphics

What a pity. That news anchors keep babbling on throughout the approach and landing. Could it be they think their drivel is more interesting than the actual communications? Even after he says they're going to shut up and listen, a minute before touchdown ... they still go on with their chatter.

TheRiskyBrothers I was a radio announcer for 17 years. So, I know all about the sins of dead air. But, the guy said he was going to shut up and let us hear the communications ... and he didn't. Avoiding dead air doesn't mean the announcer has to keep yapping ... if there's something more interesting than his banter going on. And there was. He acknowledged that fact when he first offered to shut his mouth, and then he couldn't help himself. He blew it.

I remember watching a shuttle landing here in the UK a few years ago, and the woman didn't have the slightest clue. They were talking continuously throughout the landing, but it was just random nonsense not far off the level of "ooh, look at the pretty white plane type thing".

***** Thank you. Dead air means nothin' goin' on ... tune out factor in radio. If these TV personalities allowed NASA communication to be heard, that wouldn't qualify as dead air. Without their incessant babbling there was still both audio and video, which were overshadowed with their self indulgent banter. In my professional opinion, their presentation was very unprofessional ...especially after stating they were going to shut their trap and listen.

I miss the Space Shuttle era..........what a shame.

kdm71291 30 years and two catastrophes wasn't enough? I'm aware that it's a dangerous thing, space flight, and will be in the lifetime of anyone alive today. But, from conception, the Shuttle wasn't intended to be the backbone of the US space program. It was forced into that position by Congressional budget cuts. It was due for retirement. The Shuttle we got was a trimmed down version of the original design. That design didn't have SRBs, and had a manned return to launch site booster. People bitch about the NASA budget, and yet it is such a tiny slice of the pie. Compare it to the offensive military budget for a bit of perspective. I too miss the Shuttle ... such a cool futuristic ship (in 1980). But, I feel most people don't understand the awkward position it was forced to occupy. We had no heavy booster for the duration. And they would've been more practical for many of the missions we had no alternative to but using the Shuttle.

smart451cab I appreciate your presentation of information, but I don't know how you felt the need to express all that just from what I said, which you ultimately expressed yourself, by the way! If the Shuttle system was only in operation for it's intended purposes and length of operation, I would still miss it! That is all!

I actually had the privilege of seeing the first shuttle landing in 1981at Edwards AFB, i was stationed at George afb in victorville,California and a couple of us went to see it land ,it was incredible to see

I was also stationed at George and went to see a landing. I don't remember what year it was but it was on the 4th of July.

God I miss the space shuttle. What a great invention. There’s was nothing like it great design great technology.

The banners, the one thing I hate about American television. Using one sixth of the screen and such...

Let me get this straight; you hate ONE thing about American television?! 😳

For those making fun of the 5 million dollar treadmill. It is NOT your average household treadmill, and it is NOT for the pleasure of the astronauts. This treadmill has to simulate earth's gravity, be energy efficient, extremely light weight and allow multifunction use. The space station is a research station which allows us to see what it takes for humans to live in space. It acts as a launching pad for future human space flights to Mars and beyond. If we are going to send people to other worlds, then we better know how to keep them mentally and physicals healthy. This treadmill is a small part of a very large ambition. Lessons learnt here will not only ensure we have a second home, but also help us improve the lives of billions living here now. Anyone arguing against scientific research on the INTERNET is a fucking moron and doesn't know how the internet began. The internet began as nothing more than a few scientists at CERN trying to share information and look where it is today! Things like these will be the difference between us going extinct and living forever.

Imagine if they have to understand what the astronauts are doing on the ISS. World is going worse and when someone realize that his/her life is useless, start to criticize everything and everyone. Ning3n I know a 747 pilot who likes to tell people in bars that he is miserable with guilt because he has to spray cities or be fired. He has a great time watching their eyes get big. Of course he lies about his name and the airline, and pays with cash. I can't really be mad at him. I think it's funny as hell.

I muted it and then played four different songs simultaneously on the side...and they were still somehow annoying.

For those saying that you can even hear the engines of the shuttle, you are hearing one of the two jets that track the plane as it laands, and then flies over the cameras as the shuttle lands. Those are not shuttle engines you are hearing.

@@davidmoss3380 Have you ever been to the desert on a hot day? If not, have you ever seen video of the desert on a hot day? And do you have any understanding of what causes those "heat waves" that you can see in ANY direction? And do you realize that from a visual perspective, they are amplified greatly when viewed through a super-telephoto lens like that being used here? And finally, can you comprehend the fact that anything that creates as much turbulence in the air as a machine like this would alter the appearance of those heat waves a whole lot? Yeah, one need not be a genius to have at least a basic understanding of all those things, so try not to be confused. And you won't be confused if you don't decide ahead of time that the wilder the conspiracy theory, the more likely that it's true. Oh, and your statement that "it has intakes" can so easily be proven wrong if you just look up some info showing closer pictures with structural descriptions, instead of telephoto head-on shots like these which are taken from several miles in front of the ship. Jeeze, you just have your mind made up to the point that you wouldn't lift a finger to find facts that might get in your way (which is why I shouldn't be wasting my time on anyone who deliberately chooses to be a moron, but there it is).

Sometimes I just have to come back to KZread and watch the brick fall back to earth. Such a beautiful machine.
