Yep! It's Jeff's dildo, and he's managed to get it up again. Wonders will never cease. Can you imagine Bezos owning ULA? That's scary. The North Koreans would have a base on the Moon before 'Benny Hill look-alike' Bezos could get a ULA product to the moon, given his past performance. And I use the term 'performance' generously. I'd rather see ULA becomes a Cessna division. Wow. From first solo to first orbit with one company. That would be kewl!

I saw one of the Gemini-Agena double launches when I was a kid. We lived in Fort Lauderdale and took my dad's boat all the way up to Merritt island to watch. Dad said it was a good launch to go to because we'd get two rockets instead of just one. I remember the Agena launching, then we waited an hour and a half for it to come around again so the Gemini could go chase after it. I'm glad my dad took us because I still remember it to this day.

I told him the mass media doesn't pay much attention to space like they used to but the NASA web page and others like it are always available. So now I can send him this link to show that yes the world is still interested in space and yes there have been big advances this past year! And now 2024 is shaping up to be a very busy year!

I'm glad the Lucy probe is doing well! By random chance we were returning to Port Canaveral aboard Carnival's Mardi Gras the morning of Lucy's launch, and we were running at max speed so we could clear the launch range safety area in time. We made it into the port and cleared the range just in time to watch the launch from the deck of our ship...and it was glorious. An unexpected but wonderful end to a great cruise.

I’ve seen that footage of the booster stage dropping into the village. Apparently it’s a thing just about every time they launch from there a village (there are like 45 of them in the areas around there) gets a visit. Several houses have been damaged and one girl (14) killed. One villager got paid the Chinese equivalent of $250 dollars for damages. Another guy was given the equivalent of like $45 for spending a day recovering one booster from the forest outside the village. That man was not exactly pleased with the pay out! 😂 It was all translated to English so who knows how accurate that was.

A nostalgic reminder that Textron owned Polaris snowmobiles in the mid 1970s when their liquid cooled engine IFS RXL sleds were the hottest thing on skis after Mercury left the industry taking their amazing Sno-Twister out of the market. Maybe a little biased since a buddy and I had a Polaris dealership at the time. Now Textron owns Artic Cat after selling Polaris.

I'm pretty sure the first spacecraft to reenter using a non-ablative heat shield is not the X-37B. It might not be the space shuttle Columbia either-can't find a source but I think an early Mercury used a heat sink shield.

What about X15 ? The Mercury had the 3 engines sticking out from underneath, but might have been disposed of before decent. How did the Gemini come down, to land on a salt lake with skids, and a kind of dragster parachute ? The engines were in a "trunk", like Dragon has for extra payload. 🚀🏴‍☠️🎸

  • @robertmiller9735

X-15 was suborbital, re-entering at much lower velocity, so less heat. Mercury did have detachable retros which where detached before entry (except on Glenn's flight). And while Gemini was designed to descend horizontally, the heat shield was in the back as usual.

I think you're wrong about the Citation guys calling themselves Citation on the radio because they don't want to be associated with the diddly 172. In controlled airspace, the controllers want to know what plane characteristics they're dealing with. On the control strips in ATC, there's a code what aircraft type this flight is, and to that code, there's a fixed radio phraseology what this is called. So, the controller sees GLEX on his strip, he calls out, "Global Express , do ". It's just so nobody confuses the light piston single that can do maybe 110 knots with a twin jet that can do 400...
