I met Gunny Ermy twice. San Diego, MCRD. 2002. I was in boot camp for Christmas. My first military Christmas. The base command put together a little Christmas Eve concert with Gunny Ermy as the event host. Nailed the gig but he wanted to sit down with all the recruits on the depot who were squad leaders and guides afterwards. I was a squad leader. He chilled with us for hours. He talked about all kinds of stuff. Kind is an understatement, so is funny. He was both in spades. We asked him to haze us, he did not disappoint. I've been smoked by a legend in his own time. With tears in his eyes he told us all that he loved us as brothers. I'll never forget that. I was deployed to invade Iraq 4 days after hitting The Fleet. I would meet my unit [1/7] overseas. We pulled from Bagdad to a place called An Najaf. It is the second holiest city in the Islamic world. Mecca is the only holier place. Anyway we got word that a celebrity was going to come see us. We were perplexed. B-list celebrities would come out with the USO but not to a front area with actual combat. Not only that - they were flying in on a helicopter. An old Bell Iroquois. A Vietnam Era "Huey". Well the bird came in and it's Gunny with his boots out the door. He's in uniform! Modern desert digital marpat cammies. Helmet, body armor and a loaded M-16A2 rifle. He remembered me! We had lunch together. I'm truly glad that happened. I cherish that memory. Semper.

A Marine Corps Drill Instructor's work is never done! Only the recruits have changed, and now the angels will be calling cadence. Their wings will be a hurricane! They will eat steel, piss acid and shit lava! Every demon and devil and minister of Beelzebub will quake in terror when they hear the battle cry of those who train under R. Lee Ermey! TRAIN THE ANGELS AND MAKE THEM INTO MARINES, GUNNY!! THAT should be your blessing, and ours, to that excellent and most honourable example of a Marine!

Any Marine who had R Lee Ermey for their Drill Instructor back during recruit training in the 60's can undoubtedly tell you that he was tough and hard as any of the other DI's from that era. Imagine what they think of him now after seeing him act in the movies where he played a Drill Instructor.
