It’s called Avatar: the Last Airbender for a reason. Often times I think people forget how much Aang is his own person with his own Morals. His culture is extremely important to him and it’s more than understandable why, even though no living human can relate to the same level.

yup. and the weight of preserving airbender culture and upholding airbender spiritual integrity was hundred times heavier for Aang than it was for Yangchen. bc when she had to sacrifice or compromise them in her duty as an avatar, who as a principal no longer belong to one faction only, she knew for sure that there were other airbenders who could still preserved and upheld it. Aang had no such luxury. If he's not trying his hardest to maintain the culture and the spiritual integrity of his people, no one could do it for him and that was his people's death twice over.

It’s no wonder why Zuko was so anxious about seeing Iroh again. The last time he begged for forgiveness from a family member, his father burned him. And sweet of him to let him sleep. Avatar Kuruk only lived to be 33. Even though he seemed to have it good in the real world, his avatar conflict was in the spirit world. He had to hunt bad spirits like Ko, and going to the spirit world in his physical body over and over again shortened his life span. He's one of the more tragic Avatars because nobody really knew what he did to save the world.

I remember all the hate he got consistently by Avatar fans. I like to think the creators of the show didn't like that so they fleshed Avatar Kuruk out more. He is far cooler and interesting now than when we were introduced to him on the finale.

@Jesus Pernia But it was on purpose, I can't remember the exact reason but the previous avatar before him accomplished peace between humans at the cost of the relationship with spirits. So bringing to light the conflict with spirits would have risked the peace, so Kuruk kept it a secret and drowned his physical??/spiritual pain with women and alcohol, hence the bad rep

"I was never angry with you. I was sad, because I was afraid you had lost your way." This isn't just a beautiful line of forgiveness and unconditional love. This applies to Aang, as well. Right now, Aang is struggling to keep his way, his morals, his beliefs, when the whole world is telling him that they don't matter. Aang is the only one who understands that to lose his way is to fall to the level of his enemy, which will never help anyone.

I would love a show about Kyoshi.

I think Aang's reluctance mainly comes from the culture he was raised in. The air nomads were both pacifists and vegetarians, and overall a very spiritual group of people. He likely feels that his people's values still live on through him. If he betrays those values then they really are gone.

@Scorpio Bradley It’s worth noting that Gyatso had no way of knowing that the other temples were being attacked at the same time. Even if he betrayed his cultural ideals, there surely would be other airbenders to pass them on right? Except the Fire Nation wiped out their culture, everyone and everything except for Aang. Aang has the entire legacy of a dying culture resting upon his shoulders.

However, as more and more monks were slaughtered, Gyatso realized that the Fire Nation didn’t know who or where Aang was. As the corpses of more men, women and children fell to the ground, Gyatso found himself backed into a corner, alone. Knowing that the Fire Nation intended to completely wipe out all of the Air Nomads, Gyatso thought back to the stories of Avatar Yangchen. He remembered how she once reflected on how the fate of the world sometimes had to supersede one’s own spiritual needs. With this, Gyatso used the last of his strength to bend the air out of the lungs of the platoon surrounding him. As the smoke cleared, the soldiers lay motionless on the ground. Finally succumbing to the smoke and ash, Gyatso’s final thoughts were: “Aang, for the sake of the world, please be safe.”

Avatar Kuruk actually went through a lot. Avatar Yangchen only created peace for humans not the spirts so they got mad. And that’s why Kuruk had to fight dark spirits which made his wife get killed by Koh and why he lived to be 33.

You’re right, every Avatar is different. But it’s even deeper than that when it comes to Aang. He’s not just the Avatar facing a huge world event, he’s the last of his kind. The last airbender. The entire culture was surrounded by achieving balance and inner peace. Basically the opposite of what he has to do (kill the fire lord) so it’s a million times tougher on him.

I'm not going to claim that it's not a Deux Ex Machina but I also think it's pretty clear that this isn't something just anyone can pick up. There definitely could have been more foreshadowing of energy bending and stuff. However, I think Aang had specifically EARNED this ability. None of the avatars he talked to seemed to know about it. For whatever reason, the lion turtle decided that it wanted to grant this knowledge to Aang, when no avatar had learned about it for at least like... 4-5 centuries, and most likely longer than that. I think what some other commenters said probably had something to do with it: He struggled with the idea to leave his morals behind for the greater good, he wouldn't bend, so the lion turtle knew he could bend energies if given the know-how. But yeah, could have used more foreshadowing. I do wonder if energy bending is part of at least some of the cultures Avatar was inspired by? I have no idea though.

​@@yourfaithlessfriend9399 Yeah... I think it would have been cooler if Aang made the decision without any outside help. I mean the writers even took the time to have Aang talk it out with former Avatars (and gave us 2 new ones as well). Plus, I think it would have been poetic justice if, in the end, Ozai shot one last lightning bolt, only to have it redirected in his face. It would have also spared us the cringe that was Amon and the fact that Aang's spirit deux ex machina-ed the bending issues away in LOK's first book.

The reason Kuruk was a "go with the flow" is because Yang-chen was so ruthless that nobody else did anything for a hundred years after she died. It left Kuruk with very little to do.

Azula facial expression when Ozai scream at her is the same Zuko did moments before his father burned is face. I don't think it's a coincidence, I think she did get scare of having her face burned just like Zuko. And the manipulation y'all. Ozai used Azula, he made her his own war weapon and them discard her when she wasn't useful for him anymore. And Iroh and Zuko's scene omg, I can watch a 100 times in still get the chills and feels in all of them

It's a testament to how much their trust in Zuko has grown, that they don't even react at first when he starts attacking Aang outta nowhere.

Episode 19 This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. The scenes featuring Aang are very similar to the classic Hindu text Bhagavad Gita. In the dialogue, prince Arjuna prepares to engage in a major battle when he realizes that the opposing army is populated by many of his friends and relatives, and thus becomes conflicted about fighting, despite being aware of their evil. In order to convince Arjuna of the importance of taking part in battle, Lord Krishna, avatar of the god Vishnu, appears in the form of his charioteer and counsels the prince about his duties as a member of the warrior caste and as someone tasked with following the righteous path. Generally, when Ozai makes an appearance, so does Azula, though this is the only episode in which he appears, and she does not. When Zuko and the gang are conferring with the Order of the White Lotus at the campsite, he refers to his father as "Father Lord" instead of "Fire Lord". This verbal mistake is an actual psychological phenomenon called "Freudian slip", which is thought to reveal unconscious conflicts or issues of varied natures. Zuko and Iroh's reunion is very similar to the parable of the Prodigal Son. A young man leaves his father and brother to pursue friendships with sinful people, similar to how Zuko betrays Iroh for Ozai and Azula, ironically, Zuko's immediate family. This is the first and only episode in the series in which Iroh calls Aang by his name and not by "the Avatar". The titular "Sozin's Comet" first appears at the end of this episode. The comet travels against the earth's rotation, traveling from east to west. That is why light from the comet was able to appear behind Aang's head in this episode, and why it is seen leaving in "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang" across the sea opposite the direction from which Phoenix King Ozai's airship fleet came. The place where Nyla leads the team to is very similar to the part of the Outer Wall that Iroh broke through during his 600-day siege of Ba Sing Se. The order in which Aang speaks with his previous incarnations, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen, represents the Avatar Cycle in reverse: fire, earth, water, and air. It was revealed in Avatar Extras that the writers wanted Momo with Aang on the lion turtle so Aang could talk to someone. This is Avatar Roku's last speaking role in the series.

Aang's reluctance to kill Ozai has way more to do with him trying to keep his culture alive than anything else.

According to the creators, the idea of a mythic, prehistoric era when lion turtles roamed the world with cities on their backs and their role in the creation of the first Avatar started in 2003 when the test pilot was in development. The lion turtle fits within the theme of a World Turtle, which is particularly evident in Chinese and indigenous American mythology and culture. It also bears a resemblance to the Zaratan, grandiose sea turtles found in literature and folklore, whose shells are easily mistaken for small islands. The lion turtle resembles Chinese mythological turtles, a few of which are placed around the Forbidden City in Beijing. The lion turtle also resembles Chinese guardian lions, stylized lion statues common in Chinese architecture. Many are also featured in the Forbidden City.

@@dollin971 Musical foreshadowing is a thing :) Example: Iron Man. First film. The villain plays a piece by the composer Salieri which is a throwback to the film Amadeus and was intended for clever audiences to pick up the fact he was a villain before it was actually revealed. So yes. Music can be foreshadowing if done right. Though I never said it *was* foreshadowing the lion turtle ex-machina moment (but thanks for assuming that 🥰) I just thought it was neat to point out. But btw: Bryan and Michael knew what they were doing from the very beginning. I don't know about you but I never had a problem with the lack of actual foreshadowing. But the point of the show was always to find your own destiny. Iroh *literally* told Zuko that in book 2. Aang killing Ozai would have defeated that point in my opinion and energy bending is maybe very plot convenient but oh well.

An important thing to remember with Aang and not killing the Firelord is that he's literally the last living representative of his culture. All the teachings and ways of the monks, there's nobody to carry those on anymore. There is only Aang. It's not as simple as "As the Avatar, I must forsake my culture and my own spiritual well-being and sometimes take a life, and I will do this so the rest of my people do not have to" - if Aang kills, the teachings of the monks die with him, forever. Their culture, their beliefs, their way of life, it all comes to an end. Aang's already had his people taken away from him, their teachings are all he has left of them, and he wants to honor them. To prove Sozin wrong and insist, yes, they DID deserve to exist. There's a lot on the line for Aang here.

Still, I think that killing the firelord wouldn't have been so morally wrong, it was more of a personal thing for Aang.

I am glad Sheera immediately noticed that Ozai gave Azula the title of Fire Lord, not as a promotion or reward for her loyalty, but because it was something he no longer needed, so he just threw it onto her. It's a pretty backhanded compliment. Also, Avatar Yangchen told Aang the same thing the head monk at the Southern Air Temple told Gyatso. They need "what is best for the world," and no one person's feelings are more important than the world's balance and safety.

Fair warning: the final fight between Zuko and Azula is one of the most amazing action sequences in any show ever. Not only is the action incredible, but you'll be close to tears the whole time. It's not like anything you've ever seen.

Episode 19 June refers to Katara as Zuko's girlfriend in "Bato of the Water Tribe" as well as this episode. This is the second of only two episodes where tears have been seen flowing out of Zuko's scarred left eye. The other episode is "Bitter Work". This is the first episode in which Iroh's topknot is seen since "The Avatar State". This is the second episode in which Zuko uses Iroh's sandal to locate him. In "Winter Solstice, Part 1: The Spirit World", Zuko finds his sandal in the middle of the road, indicating that he is on the right path. In this episode, he uses the scent of Iroh's sandal to guide Nyla to his location. This episode and the next episode are the only two in the series when there is no official Fire Lord present at the time. Despite Aang's previous encounters with both Avatar Kuruk and Avatar Yangchen in the Spirit World, the two Avatars introduced themselves to Aang due to the fact that, at the end of Aang's journey, Yangchen told him that his encounters would be a forgotten dream. This is the second episode in which Avatar Kuruk and Avatar Yangchen appear and the first time their voices are heard. They first appeared as miscellaneous Avatars in "The Avatar State" and were properly introduced in the online game, "Escape from the Spirit World". Avatar Kuruk mentions that he lost his love to Koh the Face Stealer. Aang met this spirit in "The Siege of the North, Part 2". Avatar Kuruk's advice to Aang recapitulates his story from "Escape from the Spirit World". At the sound of Azula’s voice, he startled and then he scowled. I think Ozai grew disappointed with Azula over time. She lied to him about who killed the Avatar. She failed to capture Zuko and the rest of the prisoners, allowing them all to escape. She had an opportunity to capture Zuko and Team Avatar, but she failed him again. It seems he didn’t invite her to his coronation. Azula hasn’t been given what she wants. Fire Lord Azula is not being at Ozai’s side. Being coronated is not doing this together. Ozai isolated her; he raised her to instill such fear that she would be unapproachable, even to her own family. Love is her one hair out of place. Banishment is a blessing in disguise. The real punishment was staying under Ozai’s roof.

Just because art of the creature was present doesn't mean it wasn't a hereto unheard of ability that allowed Aang to avoid confronting the core question of 'is killing fire hitler wrong if it would invalidate a nearly extinct culture and philosophy?' When within in-universe hours before the climax the hero is bestowed with an ability that will allow him to escape answering the core question the series presents by giving him an easy out instead of having him address the question with the tools and knowledge he had at disposal. Not to mention it was literally given to him by a God Machine, a godly creature that's sole purpose is to hand out powers like a machine. Regardless if you're fine with Energy Bending and the ending, Lion Turtles are by definition a God Machine a Deus Ex Machina

@@314basher regardless, if it is by definition a Deus Ex Machina, that doesn’t mean Deus Ex Machinas are symptomatic if bad writing, as long as it is in alignment with the established world and Thematically congruent. The Lion turtle is a transcendent being in Physical form, the universe was about to provide something that would be exploited by Firebenders to throw it out of balance permanently. Baring in mind the world has been so out of balance for 100years and Aang is part human part spirit. The Lion turtle was the Universe’s way of providing Aang, based on his willingness to retain his moral purity, a destination to fight Ozai and with an ability to bring the universe Back to where it needs to be. That’s why Ozai says to Aang *”now the Universe delivers you to me as an act of providence”*

Episode 18 This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. The chanting that can be heard when the Island/lion turtle calls to Aang, causing him to sleepwalk/swim to him, is a Buddhist chant, "Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo" (spellings vary) and can also be heard during "Winter Solstice, Part 2: Avatar Roku", when Zhao and his soldiers are about to attack Aang, as well as in "The Siege of the North, Part 2" when Aang goes into the Avatar State and walks into the pond. Sokka's terrible sense of aesthetics is shown once more. Here, he creates an ugly sand sculpture of Suki which he is extremely proud of, despite its hideous appearance. During the bar scene, June is seen fighting a man who she throws into a table; this character bears a striking resemblance to "Ryu", the protagonist of the "Street Fighter" game series. She arm-wrestled the same guy in "Bato of the Water Tribe". Though everyone else is in their season three outfit, Toph and Sokka are in their season two outfits, except in the part where Toph searches for Aang with Zuko, when she is wearing her season three outfit. This episode is the first part of the two hour movie, Sozin's Comet, which pulled in an average of 5.6 million total viewers and achieved the highest Avatar rating ever with kids 6-11 and teens. The order in which Sokka mentions the elements is the order in which they are in the Avatar Cycle. At the end of "The Western Air Temple", Katara warned Zuko that she would not hesitate to kill him if he were to hurt Aang. She had forgiven him in "The Southern Raiders", so she might have decided to wonder why he attacked Aang this time rather than retaliate. The passage of power from Ozai to Azula over the Fire Nation is very similar to how emperors would manage their home nation when given the title as Holy Roman Emperor in the Medieval Era. At the time, the Holy Roman Empire was considered the largest collection of power in the European Sphere. This is the second episode in the series where all the members of Team Avatar have worn swimsuits, with "The Beach" being the first. It is the first time Suki has worn a swimsuit in the series.

This has been such a fun ride, really happy I found yall's channel.

What I like is that none of the Avatars told Aang explicitly to kill Ozai. Their advice was no matter what he chose, he needed to be decisive, that no matter what kind of justice it was, it needed to happen so peace could be restored, etc.

Is interesting to see that in the first episode Azula is so easy to manipulate, when the whole series she is the one manipulating people like it was nothing. She learn from his father. And you realize she is like Zuko was, she only wants her father love and approval.

Still blows my mind to know that Mark Hamill voiced Ozai!!

No matter how many time i listen to Avatar Yangchen part, it always give me chills. She literally pin point all of Aang doubt, spittin out all the fact, and really got thro to him just like that.

It shows Zuko's character development in Season 1 episode 1 he wakes up uncle from his sleep Season 3 finale he waits for uncle to wake up

the thing is, Aang isnt exactly _just_ some kid who's scared or doesnt wanna kill a guy. It's literally part of his entire culture to be passive to others. He's a pacifist, it's how he grew up. So you cant really blame him for being unwilling to take the life of someone for the first time, he always tries to spare people. He's still a kid too, after all.

Its the reason the avatar is the avatar for a reason, they represent all people. i love Anng and im glad he found a solution but he isnt decisive enough, kinda like Roku. He really weighed the fate of the world upon his own beliefs as if its a choice.

@@darryljack6612 the reason he was even able to take the Firelord's bending was because of his strong will to not kill though. The lion turtle mentioned he'd need an energy that is unbendable, etc. In other words, because Aang was so determined and capable of sticking to his true nature and beliefs of being passive, he had the qualities and ability to posses/unlock the power to take a person's bending.

I findd Aangs inner conflict funny. He had no problems killing a dozen of firebender during the Siege of the Northern Air Temple when he casually created a avalanche to drop on them. lol "All life is sacred even the tiniest spider fly caught in its own net." I didn't see that when he decided to kill that a buzzard wasp in the desert _after_ Momo was saved.

But when Korra revealed and answered all our questions it kind of ruined it for me personally.
