To do this AND Sibelius in one night is simply insane. Who cares if she messed up at the very end of basically the hardest violin concerto that is still played to date. There's a reason why she won even with her glaring mistakes.

+Matthew Chow Nobody performs Wieniawski live. It is too exhausting. And all of the recordings available are not played through live. Her fingers must've been giving out at the end. This is an impressive performance. Clear to see why she won.

Sure... it's been played live before. He probably played it at around the time of his Wieniawski studio recording when he was in top form. Try finding a program these days. You'll be hard pressed to find a violinist who keeps it in his repertoire for play on short notice. Maybe you'll see it played in Poland. It doesn't reach the technical heights of Britten or Schoenberg, but it is absolutely exhausting. Wieniawski is on par with Paganini 1, but longer...

She is incredible. This is a very demanding concerto, and rarely played. Fun fact: Wieniawski was a 19th Century violinist whom other violinists who had heard him, reported that he possessed the living continuous vibrato comparable to violinists of the 20th Century. In the following generation, Ysaÿe was influenced by him. Of course, we have to rely on those reports of violinists who spanned both eras, he not living into the time of recording. Massart relayed his recollections to young Kreisler. Quick note: Her technique is nearly second-nature - that is, she doesn't focus so much on technique in her performance that she has lost the fluidity and rhythm of the music. In the greatest of violinists, it appears as if the violin is playing itself. As Bruno Walter praised, in the eulogy of a great violinist of a bygone era, "He did not play the violin; he became the violin."

The suspense of the opening violin solo is exciting. Soyoung delivers with perfection. It's a beautiful concerto and it comes alive exquisitely in her sizzling performance.

WOW! That was a great! & Bravo! It was so good that she constantly playing last a few measures on 3rd mvt. That was just slipped, NOT a mistake. The orchestra catches so well. Soyoung Yoon plays so rich and heart warming sound. Her Wieniawski concerto no. 1 is one of the best rank among the all violinists.

To be quite honest, I'm not usually a fan of these young violinists who make the rounds of these competitions, but I have to say Ms. Yoon is quite amazing in both her consummate musicianship and unshakable technical mastery.....!

As a violinist I only feel pain at the tought of learning this, especially passages like 9:57, and the octaves everywhere.

  • @kanashihana

It´s mostly decimas, not octaves. Somewhere on the 4th/5th page you will have octaves, that´s about when she starts playing from 8.34 somewhere there you will have octaves. But before that you don't really have ones. This concerto is absolutely playable! You only need to figure out what to play, but it´s not that it´s absolutely impossible to play. I can know it since i am learning it right now.

Nothing makes me happier than a concerto played exquisitely by a young artist.... a concerto I might add which is not played a littler lesser than the "greats" but also *not* in the usual D minor. I'd forgotten this one was in F# minor!

Her fingers must be exhausted after half an hour of the possibly the most demanding violin concerto in existence. You can't compare this to a studio recording (like Perlman's rendition that people seem to prefer). She's been playing straight through for half an hour. A splendid performance by Yoon.
