Mercedes-Benz tried something like this in the 90s with biodegradable insulation for the entire wire harness. Even without critters nibbling at them, they tended to be a problem, years down the road. Imagine having to have a shop tear apart your entire car to replace the harness because it was rotting away and causing shorts.

  • @Stambo59

Replaced several of the engine looms on those whilst working for an auto electrical shop in the early 2000s. They would short out and shut down, the wiring to the coils and injectors that were subjected to engine temps were the worst. I would pull the engine covers off those before even hooking up a scan tool and see crumbling insulation. Amazing how well those Bosch computers put up with the shorts

To me, the word “rally” conjures up the sound of the induction roar of an approaching Volvo as its straight six ingests the atmosphere through six individual Weber throats, and the shriek of its tailpipe screaming out the horses. It hardly conjures up the soft song one might hear from something not unlike an electric forklift.

Biodegradable and edible material shouldn't be on something that is intended to be around for 10-20 years, especially not function and safety critical stuff like the brake system. If it isn't foxes eating soy wiring, it will be mice, rats, raccoon, squirrels or whatever other hungry critters may be in your neighborhood. Heck, it may only be a matter of ants before they figure out that some modern vehicles are an all-you-can-eat buffet.
