SOVIET RED ARMY KALASHNIKOV RIFLE & MACHINE GUN AK-47 TRAINING & INDOCTRINATION FILM 88974

This Soviet film, made for the indoctrination of Red Army infantry troops, highlights many aspects of marksmanship including the use of the standard issue Kalashnikov rifle AK-47, small arms, and the Kalashnikov machine gun.
Narration: We’ve been doing marksmanship training for many days now. It is difficult. But as Suvorov said, “What is difficult in training will become easy in a battle.” (01.00) The Kalashnikov assault rifle is the powerful and reliable service rifle of the Soviet military. The Kalashnikov works smoothly in any conditions: under the pouring rain, in cold temperatures, in dust. (03.12) Operational characteristics of the rifle: the maximum bullet range is 3,000 m; the casualty producing effect is preserved for up to 1,500 m; the aiming range is 1,000m; the maximum effective range is 400m; a bullet pierces through a brick wall of up to 15 cm; the rate of fire is up to 600 shots a minute; the effective rate of burst fire is up to 100 shots a minute; the effective rate of fire at single-shot fire is up to 40 shots a minute. (03.58) The main parts of the rifle are the barrel with a receiver, a sight, and a stock. (04.20) Other parts are a receiver cover, a breechblock carrier with a breech plug, a breechblock, a recoil spring, a forearm with gas tube assembly, a trigger and firing mechanism, a foregrip, a magazine, a bayonet knife. (04.46) During the battle, a soldier must know the firing techniques. Here are a few of them: firing from a prone position (06.05), from a kneeling position (07.15), from a standing position (07.35). I remember it from school. ‘You’re closing the wrong eye! Don’t breathe when you’re pulling the trigger!’ (09.37) The Kalashnikov hand-held machine gun is the most powerful squad automatic weapon. (12.26) Most of its parts are shared with the modernized variant of the AK-47 rifle. . There are three stages of fire: getting into the position, firing, and ceasing fire. This is the instruction for firing from a prone position. (14.32) Firing it on the move is easy thanks to the simplicity, mobility, and the light weight of the weapon. The next step was learning to find the right spot for firing, keeping watch, choosing an aim. The spot should conceal the soldier from the enemy and be suitable for applying firing techniques. (16.01) Keep an eye on the field, inspect the objects from right to left, first the closer objects than the further ones. It is important to search for targets and shoot quickly. First shoot the most dangerous and important target, then the one that is the closest to you and is the most vulnerable. A moving target should be shot considering the prediction interval, just like while firing at airspace targets. (18.06) Night firing is an ordeal. It is important to sight quickly and lock the target. (18.49) The guys did well, even though it took time to learn. (19.35) Grenades can be of different types, depending on the fragment distribution range. (20.28) Here is the structure of RGD-5, RG-42, and F-1. There are a few positions for throwing a grenade: from a standing position, from a kneeling position, from a prone position. While throwing a grenade, it is important that the rifle is in the position that would provide the ability to grab it and fire immediately. (23.40) A hollow charge grenade RKG-3 is used to fight tanks and other armored targets. Its weight is 1,070 gr, its throwing range is 15-20 m. (24.22) Let’s see how such a grenade should be thrown according to the rules. (25.15). When one is targeting a moving tank, it is necessary to aim a few meters in front of it. (26.15) Not running away, not being afraid means surviving, it means winning against a tank. (26.46) It is not easy to handle small arms, but as Suvorov said, “What is difficult in training will become easy in a battle.” Good luck with your infantry training, comrades.

Very nice. We were fed full of bullshit about the Soviet Infantryman back in the mid-1980s at my first duty station in Germany. I did get to fire the AK-47 and RPK at Graf during familiarization of Soviet Infantry weapons. We were taught how to load, aim, fire, and field strip these weapons. We shot the regular US Army qualification with pop up targets out to 300 meters with these weapons and I was surprised how accurate I was using them. Our instructors from the Military Intelligence Battalion told us that the sighting was the same as using a Winchester or Marlin 30-30 or any .22 caliber rifle sight. We were knocking targets down like crazy and fun with this training. The bullshit part was they said that the Soviet soldier was not motivated and not trained well. The US Army had plenty of unmotivated soldiers too in our Infantry units. Officers and NCOs did the same thing in both armies with enough ass kicking motivated poor soldiers to shoot well and train. The difference was the Soviet Army was a conscript army but they did turn out plenty of well trained soldiers to their standards. If war would have broken out in Europe during that time we wouldn't worry about how good the Soviet Army was because they would be out to kill you once they are out of their BMPs dismounted. I found out how good the AK-47 was in Panama 1989-90 and Iraq during 2006 through 2008 by different armies and guerillas in combat. The AK-47 is reliable, simple, and deadly in the hands of the user. Today I own 3 variants of this rifle and enjoy them at the range. It sucks to be at the receiving end during combat.

I was commissioned in FY 1993, so while I missed the whole Cold War thing, I figure both of us were trained under same APFT tables and same Air-Land Battle doctrine FM 101-1/10 . I was 13A FIST (Mech). I guess you were 11 series. 11C Mech infantry, perhaps. Soviet Forces Germany had light load of conscripts, we were briefed. Infantrymen in Motor Rifle Regiments in East Germany were upper selects conscripts but mostly volunteers. NCO , praporshnicks (like an enlisted Warrant combo) , and officers were career soldiers. Those were Guards regiments , a higher tier formations of Soviet Army, selected from Moscow Western Military Region. They got more training rubles, and priority on equipment. They came in with more education, then average Soviet conscript from non-native Russian speaking parts of USSR. The peasant conscripts , many barely literate, were consigned to engineering construction battalions, or Far East Military District units near Chinese border. Select volunteers were assigned to VVDV(Airborne) divisions , after completing Soviet airborne schools. Soviet airborne were static line qualled, and many also had rigger quals, packing their own primary canopy. Reserve canopies were packed by spealized rigger personel. So if balloon had gone up in 1983-1988 , and you found yourself in Team Yankee situation, the average Soviet Mech infantryman you would have faced, was very much like yourself. High school grad, some 2 year college education, placed above average in Soviet version of ASVAB, good service record, no prior civilian felony record. I got some AK-74 trigger time , at Ft. Sill. But beyond 120 meters, you had to have some superior marksman skills. Which I lacked. M-16A2, I qualled with was way more accurate, but prone to jams if not cleaned . Where AK was superior , was field stripping. It broke down into six parts, and that was sufficient for self PMCS . It fired small 5.46 Soviet round , opposed to 7.62x39 AK47 ball.

It was likely a form of boosting our own troops morale by convincing you you're better than your counterpart. The American M16A1 and the Soviet rifle at the time, the AK-74 were both pretty much equals. In regards to the 74, it had almost zero recoil because of the dtk muzzle device. Thanks for sharing and thank you for your service!

As someone who can neither speak Russian or read cyrillic here are my takeaways from watching this video. AK47 is glorious rifle. When cleaning rifle take off your shirt. When shooting at enemy planes lead your shots. Make sure to shoot parachuting pilot. When at state sanctioned fair show drunk old man up by shooting better than him at shooting booth. Do not go into prone position while in open field you will disappear if you do not find cover. Firearm instructor has best looking number 5 and 4 he must have won many awards in school for handwriting. Let tank roll over you then throw grenade.
