    Mir is my favorite Russian publisher. I visited one of the science cities for a while to review their technology right after the USSR collapsed, found a bookstore that was mostly math and physics, and came back with a few feet of books, mostly Mir. The paper is so thin you can see the font on the next page through the page you're reading, but the information is still good. I feel like the USSR texts are denser in part because they didn't have very good computers relative to the West, so scientists solved more problems mathematically rather than with numerical methods grinding on a computer.

    ❤❤❤ New Century Book House (NCBH) imported and supllied books from Soviet Union in Madras. They are still here, but mostly publish Tamil translated works and also reprints of Perelman's books but in paperback

    This book had been sold by an Indian owner, the Rs. 11 means 11 Rupees in Indian currency, during Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government India was close to the Soviet Union, so the Indian book sellers bought Soviet Union Books at a very cheap rate, and also the Soviet Embassy also had Book Exhibitions. 1 Indian Rupee = 0.012 US Which means 11 X 0.012 = 0.132 US dollars

    The book is really good, I saw it in the library somewhere (written off, so I managed to read it a little).I study according to Soviet textbooks myself. You are right - these are rubles (currency).

    Soviet textbooks are written as if you already have a PhD in math. Those who wrote them may be good mathematicians, but they are bad teachers. They were proud of how they wrote textbooks in a strict and formal way at the highest level of abstraction, in a confusing and unexplained way. I studied at a Soviet university and Western textbooks were like a breath of fresh air for me. You should be proud of your textbooks. Soviet textbooks are written in the style of a telephone book.

    Maybe you mean books for high school? Soviet books for 11-18 year old students are quite simple

    These books were mostly written for teachers to supplement lectures. They were almost never meant to be self study books. Students were not expected to own copies. These were bought in bulk for libraries even in India back in the 80s. The Soviets had special schools for advanced students. None of this was targeted at the average student.

    What I don't understand about vector spaces is. Isn't it a bit pretentious to talk about "subspaces" and "vector spaces" when all other vector spaces are simply a subspace of the vector space with the canonical base vectors? Like for example in R3 e1, e2, e3? When you have a different vector space like for a function f and f1(e1), f2(e2) and f3(e3) you basically just test if the rules for vector spaces apply. But the simplest space for them to apply and where the rules are actually derived from is the canonical.

    That’s why they are “basis” vectors? I’m not too sure what you’re asking

  • @brettstafford9665

    @brettstafford9665

    No there are vector spaces that aren’t subspaces of R^n. For example: let’s say the basis is functions of the form 1, x, ,x^2, … Check to see if this is a vector space. Another one: complex numbers. Also, magic squares. Also, null spaces. However null spaces are kind of just a subspace of R^n.

    @@brettstafford9665 I would exclude the complex numbers since it's the same argument as for R. But the others seem interesting. I will check them out.

    The point about how needing to struggle to find the solution is beneficial.. We are now in a time where the resources are greater than ever before, with the internet and chatgpt. Do you think that students are getting dumber because they can go to those resources to get all the answers? And how would that affect the future?
