Soutzoukakia Smyrneika & the Best mashed Potatoes: Greek Meatballs in Tomato Sauce with Mashed Potat
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Soutzoukakia Smyrneika are sausage-shaped meatballs that are cooked in a hearty tomato sauce. I like to serve them with creamy mashed potatoes. This classic Greek comfort food can be made ahead and frozen for those busy days and it’s a recipe that the whole family will love.

Serves 8-10
For the Meatballs:
2 pounds ground beef (lean or 80/20)
2 small onions
A small bunch of fresh parsley washed and dried
1 and ½ cups breadcrumbs
½ cup milk
2 eggs, lightly beaten
2 garlic cloves
1 and ½ teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon crushed dried oregano
1 and ½ teaspoons salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
For the Tomato Sauce:
3-4 tablespoons olive oil
1 garlic clove, grated
1 (28-ounce) can tomatoes, pureed
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 bay leaf
½ teaspoon ground cumin
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon dried crushed oregano
For the Mashed Potatoes:
4 pounds Russet or Gold potatoes or a combination of both
1 and ¼ cup half and half, heated
4 ounces salted butter, melted
2 teaspoons roasted garlic puree
Salt and black pepper to taste
Preheat the oven to 400 °F, 200 °C.
Make the meatballs:
Add the garlic cloves to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped.
Remove the leaves from the parsley and add to the food processor and pulse until finely chopped.
Peel and quarter the onions and add to the food processor in a few batches and pulse until finely chopped.
Add the onion, parsley, and garlic to a large mixing bowl along with all of the remaining meatball ingredients and mix well.
Shape the meatballs into balls or sausages and place on a baking tray.
Heat some olive oil in a cast-iron skillet and pan-fry the meatballs 3-4 minutes per side until golden. Transfer to a baking dish.
Make the sauce:
Add the olive oil and garlic to a small saucepan. Heat through for a few seconds and immediately add the pureed tomatoes. Season with salt, pepper, cumin, and sugar. Add the bay leaf and cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes or until thickened. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Add the dried oregano.
Assemble the dish:
Remove the soutzoukakia from the baking pan and pour the sauce on the bottom. Add the soutzoukakia over the sauce.
Bake in a preheated oven on the center rack for about 30 minutes.
Make the Mashed Potatoes:
While the soutzoukakia are baking make the mashed potatoes. Peel the potatoes and cut them into 2-inch cubes. Add the potatoes to a pot and cover with cold water. Season with a teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender. About 8-10 minutes. Drain the water from the potatoes.
Pass the potatoes through a potato ricer into a mixing bowl. Add the hot half and half in a few batches along with the melted butter. Season with salt, pepper, and roasted garlic. Mix well with a wooden spoon or a spatula. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Serve the meal with a salad and some feta cheese. Enjoy!

Delicious recipe, thank you!!!
Amazing recipe as usual.Thanks againe
Excellent recipe and I love that roasted puréed garlic. Definitely going to try that one.
Yummy. Going to make them
Looks wonderful.
A Danish wire/dough whisk would make easy work of getting the mixture evenly mixed. You could use both sizes, with all the mixing you do. Seriously, I’m giving one to all family members, is a lifesaver at times. Love your videos & recipes. Would love to make this for adult grandsons- were horrified when I made hamburger mix into hot dog shape to fit the buns I had on hand. 😅
Oh my gosh! Your recipes look so amazing. Going to try this one for sure.
This is the best meatballs I have ever made! Fantastic recipe Dimitra, thanks so much for sharing 😊
Wow you are amazing!! Thank you .👏👏💕
Just delicious looking like all of your dishes are! 😊👍😋
OMG OMG OMG THIS IS THE BEST!!
Nice and tasty!!!
Looks delicious
I boil my potatoes with extra salt in the water. One shouldn't need to add much salt to the mashing. I boil with skins on for more flavor (the potato ricer will separate the skins from the potatoes-just scoop out the skins between each pressing). I mix the potatoes in the same pan I boil them in over the lowest heat while adding the hot milk and soft butter to make sure my mashed potatoes are really hot. Nothing more disappointing than cooled down mashed potatoes. My mashed are on the thin/very moist side. I do not add the garlic because there is a subtle nuance of the earthy potato cooked with the skin and the unsalted butter........mmmmmmmmm Thank you Dimitra....I baked your Spanikopita with the ruffled top for a Sunday get together for about 35 people. They were so impressed.......and I didn't even have to pre cook the spinach, which was grown in our garden......your recipe was Angel sent.
I am making this . Looks delicious 😋
This looks delicious! Also, I LOVE potato ricers. I never make mashed potatoes without one.

I always cook some garlic cloves with the potatoes when i'm making mashed potatoes Then mash it all together. You'll get a subtle garlic flavour to your mashed potatoes, which is divine! :)

Ummmm! I am cooking this as well. Thank you 💐
Excellent! When boiling potatoes for mashed, add a couple of whole cloves of garlic. After ricing potatoes , briskly whisk for extra creamy mashed .
Love the mashed up potatoes. I always add a little bit of sugar as well to my mashed potatoes. Learned from someone and they taste a lot better.
yum today i am making your chicken in spinach sauce, but tomorrow its going to be this one, looks delicious

Dimitra's Dishes, “Efcharistisi mou”! You are just as lovely as Laura! But equally important, both of you literally “dish” out recipes that work and are delicious to eat!
OM GOODNESS!! PLEASE invite me over for dinner or ANYTIME you make this!! I live alone and that amount would feed me for several days because I'd eat it morning, noon and for supper! (Can I come over, Please?!?) LOL All kidding aside, that looks simply scrumptious!! I wish I had your address to send you a reliable spatula to get ALL of the ingredients out of the food processor and blender. I would almost lick them clean!! Hahaha!!( JK, of course, but the ingredients all look so enticing. Thank you for the video. Perhaps one day I'll be able to make that for myself and have plenty for leftovers. God Bless.

I am from Athens Greece and my great grandrents were from Smyrna, the traditional recipe has no parsley or onion in it..

Looks good enough to eat just how are used to do it when I was in Greece I said are used to put a little bit of diesel in mine make the meat and definitely cinnamon your babies don’t know what they’re missing
Hello Demitra! Kali Sarakosti! When you freeze them raw, do they seem “watery” or loose when thawed, right before you cook them? (Same for keftethakia?)
I also use red peppers or paprika
I love the salt jar…….
Hi Dimitra, I would like to try this recipe the traditional way with the cinnamon. I don't care for cumin and I think the cinnamon sounds good. I just don't know how much I'm supposed to use. Will you please tell me the amount I'm supposed to use for the meat and the sauce? I love your recipes btw.

sorry to interject :) she doesn't put cinnamon in so instead of that she uses cumin..so it's kinda like a replacement. I would use one or the other, both might be overpowering, but Chef Dimitra i'm sure will give you her tips :) (hope you don't mind my comment, just saw this and thought i'd give my 2 cents worth lol)

I can’t find your store were I ordered your Greek evoo
Does the milk make the meat mushy?
Lol. Im with the kids. Cinnamon belongs in sweet treats! Its oblivious that Ive been watching too many (not really) of your videos. I freaked out when I saw you frying on the stove and not in the oven. Mashed or twice baked potatoes is my most missed food on keto. Especially with garlic.
You forgot to link the potato ricer...
While I love your soutzukakia recipe the mash looked like mush. I'm guessing we eat it differently in th uk as opposed to Europe

You can finely chop everything using a sharp knife :)
I am like your kids: I don't like cinnamon. Cinnamon is the only spice I dislike. I don't use cinnamon. Not even in desserts. I love cumin. I put a lot of cumin in many dishes. 🤎
Your a good cook. Slow down on the rapid talking!!!
Listen to your kids, Dimitra! lol Cinnamon belongs on rice pudding, not in savory dishes.
