THIS ENGINE 4458 I USED TO BUILD FIRES IN IT, SO AS TO KEEP STEAM UP SO THE ENGINES COULD BE MOVED WITH OUT TROUBLE.. THAT WAS MY JOB FOR A WHILE WHEN I WORKED FOR SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAIL ROAD THAT WAS DURING THE 40'S AND 50'S THOSE WERE THE DAYS AS WE OLD ONES KEEP ON SAYING. THEY REALLY WERE.THE DAYS..

It was a GS-5?

As a pointer to those who may not know. At 2:35 as the locomotive is starting a heavy train, the wheels are in wheel creep conditions. Not a true wheel slip where it would run away wildly. The engineer is laying down sand that can be seen pouring out at the first driving wheel. This guy is an excellent engineer as he has expertly started his heavy train and gotten the most from his locomotive. This was truly great railroading caught on film.

I lived on the Coast line main in Ventura County. They'd come by my house going over 75 mph daily.

I miss the Southern Pacific, it had so much personality in those days. I guess every system did. Now it's just all the same, same engines, same companies, same colors. I dont know what Western railroading would have even been like without the SP.

The SP was my first railroad experience in El Paso Texas. When I say experience I mean actually running trains full scale. It was a great coming of age experience that is still serving me well thirty years later. I currently have two SP locomotives under my care. A SD40-r and a SD40T-2. My first SP locomotive was the 3420, ex El Paso and Southwestern 271 built in 1904. The SP and the people El Paso were great to me.

This footage is really beautiful. I really like the music too. Steam will always be king in my heart.

Great footage. I saw the GS series, AC-12 cab forwards, and maybe an AC-9 in there, too.

It might be possible to re-ransfer the 16mm at a higher resolution and without the interlacing now.

Why I’m suddenly in love with steam I have no clue. I will be honest in saying I absolutely cannot stand the transition era (late 40’s-63) mainly because it’s so overly modeled with good reasons but nonetheless I have a distaste for it as it was the end of beauty over corporate bodied. As a kid it seemed like there weren’t many steamers still even running on excursion lines but today it seems like more and more are being restored and I think it has some to do with big boys publicity successes throughout the country. I teared up in 2019 when I saw it and a tad bit the second this year I also saw 4005 in Denver, just need to see the daylight and 3977 challenger and I’ll have seen every one I treasure

The first car at 3:09 has the "mailbag grabber hook" they used to pick up 1st class mail "on the fly". I once saw one of those bags explode on a pick up attempt. It was amazing how far mail envelopes can travel behind a 70 mph passenger train once released from the bag. I spent the afternoon helping the Post Office guy pickup the mail on the tracks. It was a real adventure for a 12 year old kid.

That is incredible footage! VERY well done! THANK you for rescuing these superb films from that yard sale, and for digitizing them so we all can enjoy them. I am a real Daylight fan, and really, really appreciate these rare films. I am SO glad Mr. Sage filmed those trains back then! Please post more of them. Thanks!

my favorite part is 3:44 actually you see the train fly like a superman and you also can see the train runs fast as heck than cars/truck

superbumfinkel , I chosed the music because of KZreads copyright ship they keep saying on me every time I uses Big Ban sound. So this time I used the music that's with my editing program. I couldn't match all the scenes with steam sound so that explains for the music. It's better then having a narrator at every scene. Len.

Yes, a new job looking back on yesteryear. The background music should be very, very low or not at all. Matching sound to the movies of those days was nice but I would have left the film in the original silence mode but colorized the black and white film. I do realize for authenticity not to colorize the film. Again, thanks for your efforts in putting this together for so many people to enjoy yesteryear.

The sight of the San Joaquin Daylight with steam is great. The GS-4 and 5 locomotives could really make time between Bakersfield and Fresno.

I don't mind the music. I actually think it adds to the nostalgia of Steam. Rail-fans are some of the most uptight people on youtube. Y'all need to chill the fuck out and just enjoy the visuals of some fantastic engines. Most of the sounds in this video don't even belong to the actual engines, so what does it matter to you that music is dubbed over it? Nothing but complaining from all of you. Great video. Thanks for preserving such excellent footage! My personal favorite is at 3:43. What a magnificent shot. I'd give almost anything to see something like that in person.

Great footage... ahh to be able to go back in time and stop the editor from adding music. The soundtracks of just the train would have taken me back in time more effectively...

There is an academic research about the economical impacts of Dieselization of american RR. one that extensively checked out the number factors to the very detail. Of course! Steam takes at least 5 men to run it and it is quite complex to run. but... much of a surprise. a Diesel locomotive has a very short economic life. just 8-10 years! the Dieselization was actually bourne out of Lobbyism. not from an intrinsic 'attributes' of each type of the locomotives.

when steam was king? steam always will be king i tell you!! i mean, is there any diesel locomotive today that can pull trains of 9000 ton on a 15% hill with 20 mph witout help of other locomotives? i don't think so. i'm so disappointed i never experienced this great time of railroad. LONG LIVE THE STEAM AGE!!!! :D

Eng 4458 was a regular on the Morning Daylights #98 & 99. One of the engineers, Ed Whitehead, referred to the 4458 as, " The bull of the woods."

It's such a tragedy that all those trains and railroads are gone. If we could only bring back the trains, cars, morals, patriotism, and prices from a better time, while retaining our computers, Nintendo, Cartoon Network, current Pope, etc...

AWESOME converted color film SP Steam footage! Some familiar locations in there (Peninsula, Oakland and 34th Street/Emeryville). Is the SP 217 Shop Dinky footage (4:41) shot from at the Mission Bay roundhouse or the West Oakland roundhouse? I know it was used at both RH's in the 50's.

This is a really cool video. Is there anyone who can place the different shots? I'm really curious to know where each of these images were captured.

Good footage!! No offense but the music kind of ruins the video, its harder to listen to the steam locomotives and is distracting. Please consider as constructive criticism.

OK! You have some great camera and sound recording work of great trains by a the late Robert G. Sage, Sr, ruined by dubbing in music. Your friend did a good job with the sound recordings of steam but I hope you didn't have to pay him extra for the cheesy music. Steam power does not need any music! Please take the music out and re-post it.

Stop acting like a foamer and chill the hell out.

The elevator music in the background was uncalled for. The sound of the locomotive was all that was needed to complete the video. You should edit out the music.

the addition of the music is quite distracting.. I only got 30 seconds into the vid and said the hell with it because of that rotten music!

Turn your volume down when watching.

Nice view of the speeding train! Nix the stupid repetitive music. Would rather hear your well done sounds of the locomotive and train even if added.Why do you think muzac must be added to a railroad film?

I will say the people who try to take the pictures of the rail road has a lot to learn before they are call cameramen
