Southern Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle (Carolina Style) Build and finished rifle.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Southern Mountain style rifle based on Western North Carolina style. This muzzle loading flintlock rifle is a 36 caliber "squirrel rifle" style. 42" barrel, double set triggers and right handed flintlock. American Black Walnut stock. This slide show showcases the Longrifles build process. It uses a Rice Swamped Barrel, Davis Triggers, Small Chambers Siler Lock and steel hardware. I made the butt plate, toe plate and side plate washer.

Great job. The rifle has a large lock panel. Also, the tail of the lock plate appears to be rounded, was this typical? I'm not all that familiar with southern style rifles.

Yes on both counts. Rounded tails were quite common on these rifles as was a rather large lock panel and rounded front and tail on the lock panel too. typically the wrists are quite thin which accentuates the lock panel and makes it stand out. On this rifle I used a small silver flintlock and modified the plate by rounding the pointed tail. Many if not most Appalachian rifles used "hardware store" imported locks. Few of the smiths there forged their own locks. It was done but most were store locks. Even though the style appears to be fairly early, the most of these originals I've seen were early to mid 1800s and some were still being made and used well after the US Civil war. I have not seen a lot of mid caliber rifles from this region. Most are either small caliber (32-38 range) or larger (50 cal range). I guess it had to do with the game around there. Squirrels and other small game and deer. Hope this helps and thank you for asking and the compliment on the rifle.

Nice!!! I just had a Carolina Trade gun made.Of course it's a smooth bore. My 5th gg was in West North Carolina in the mid 18th century. I assume the rifles we're later like the yours?

Brian, you should post a slide show of your guns. I love the Carolina style rifles. Most of what I build are Appalachian style rifles.
