Southern Cross University (MAIN LISMORE CAMPUS) REVIEW // An Unbiased Review by Choosing Your Uni

I reckon Southern Cross University is the classic case where looking beyond university rankings can sometimes lead you to gold.
Why?
Because the university doesn't rank super well overall on paper... BUT....
...people LOVE studying here. They love working here.
And the uni has created an absolutely fantastic community.
Will it suit everyone?
No.
But if you're looking for a more intimate study experience, with a strong caring community, where the cost of living and stress is lower (and lifestyle is great), maybe SCU at Lismore is the place for you.
And that's not to say that some of its academic areas aren't genuinely awesome. They are.
It's just that rankings don't tell the whole story and Southern Cross Lismore could be just the hidden gem you're looking for.
Are you curious now?

SCU graduate here. Great university, particularly if you want to go into health or environmental/marine science. Small classes and you get to know your lecturer on a first name basis unlike bigger universities where you're just a number. Amazing location too. In one day you can survey trees in a national rainforest and take samples along a beautiful beach while still being back in time to carry out all your tests. If you don't mind a quieter life, it's a great option.

I literally walked by the "campus" yesterday. It's not actually a campus - more like a building in the city centre. Depending on what you're hoping for from your experience, that might not be what you're looking for.

Love your work mate. Question, I did an MA Fine Art, 2001. (gov sclolarship) at Newcastle uni (today, no more art school UoN) also have B.Ed. D&T (2003) casual teacher in schools today. I wish to do MA fine Art, again? Different focus. At SCU.. or other uni. Is that going to be OK. Are fees covered? For MA? Semi retired, Appreciate your time. Paul

Domestic postgrad is almost all fee paying, except priority areas like health and education. Not sure about fine art. FEE-HELP is available to help pay, but it’s deferred onto tax. Bummed to hear UoN doesn’t offer fine arts anymore, that was a good program.

I’d choose Lismore if you want a beautiful green campus and more of a “community” experience. Lismore is a smallish town inland from the coast. Good community on campus - chilled and quiet vibe. I’d choose Gold Coast if you really want to be close to the beach. The “campus” is really just a couple of buildings next to the airport, but it’s a stone’s throw from the beach.

Great Video! However, I've watched many of your uni review videos and I think all of the unis have been portrayed in a positive light. Maybe it is your genuine enthusiasm coming across, but I think that maybe you should have mentioned some negative points about the unis, if you have any, and I think viewers will appreciate if we could get a more balanced review. Both positives and negatives. And maybe the interviewees could be asked the things they don't like or things they believe could be better. I think maybe your attitude could be influencing the student's answers and making them withhold certain information that could be crucial for the viewers in deciding which uni to attend. That's just my two cents, and regardless, thank you for your awesome videos. QILT has also helped me drastically. Sorry for the long read. Cheers!

Thanks for the reply @lazy guy - I really appreciate you taking the time. I've thought a lot about this so can explain why I've taken the deliberate approach that I have. My goal is to be "balanced" in these videos and I want to help people to choose universities that suit them based on strengths, not weaknesses. For example, in this video you'll hear me note that the university doesn't rank overall. I also note that rankings don't account for everything and that in individual subject areas the uni does well (and in particular, it is a university serving its community rather than striving for a high ranking). I would say this is a "balanced" assessment. Given that I don't want to create a 30-minute long reviews, I believe that focusing on positives is more objective than negatives. Why? Because "strengths" are less subjective. They have to be "proven" in different ways (rankings, reviews, recommendations, evaluations). Weaknesses are very subjective. Would it be fair for me to publish a video of one unhappy student talking about a weakness (just one person's experience that is very subjective) when other metrics show that a university is strong in that particular area (less subjective)? Strengths are less likely to go "out of date" quickly, whereas "weaknesses" can be addressed faster by institutions (hence putting the video out of date sooner). Finally, my personal view is that people should choose a university based on the STRENGTHS of a university that actually SUITS THEM, rather than on "weaknesses". For example, if a uni has an awesome business school and you are desperate to study business, it is more useful to hear about the unis that are strong in that area, rather than a single student saying that it has a crappy library. In the case of this uni, you should study here if you really want to feel like you belong in a tight knit community. If rankings are important to you, it's not a great choice and you should go to a prestigious metropolitan university. You should follow your interests and passions, which are best followed by seeking out the strengths of a university that match those interests, rather than avoiding weaknesses. If you focus on weaknesses in life you can only lose....because you're ignoring the strengths that suit you best. Good luck!

Really appreciate that! If you’ve got any questions about any of the unis, or a “this uni vs that uni” kinda question, go ahead an post it. You’ll see in the comments on some vids that I’m fine to say why I would NOT choose particular unis (based on MY perspective only, of course). So I’m happy to give my views, just prefer them to be more in context when comparing against other unis.

Hi Emma, If it were me choosing between those two I would definitely chose Griffith. SCU Gold Coast is right next to the beach but it just lacks a bit of charm for me. It’s a small campus and a good education program, but Griffith is a really nice uni and campus experience.

What about the chances of getting part time jobs for international student in lismore?

  • @ChoosingYourUni

Lismore is a regional city. There will be casual jobs in cafes, supermarkets and things like that. In terms of other work, in established office businesses etc there will be likely fewer options than in the major cities. The upside is the town is a nice size and is a good community.

Do Australian Universities have competitive sports teams? If yes, how do you get into them?

  • @ChoosingYourUni

    @ChoosingYourUni

    4 жыл бұрын

Yes, but it's not like the USA. Sport is important for many universities. Some even have facilities and services for elite athletes. That includes offering scholarships. Many unis have competitive sports teams, ranging from "fun" competitions through to serious, elite sport (like First Grade cricket, rugby etc). Best option is to Google the name of your sport of interest along with the name/s of Australian unis you're interested in. The details should come up.
