Thanks for the effort you all put into making this happen. If Cody hasn’t brought his pack up to your Chihuahuan desert country in New Mexico already, I think it’d be interesting to see this same hunt/discussion format replicated to catch bobcats in the desert.

Those vines are called Wait a minite vines... We don't have planted pines here in the Ozarks of southern Missouri Ive hog hunted in other states in planted pines and run running hounds also in planted pines I use to go to a lot of field trials all over... We do have some really bad cutovers here after loggers have clear cut an area it grows up in sprouts & briars of all kinds... I started with running hounds and tree bred hounds still have some but also have Cur Dogs and Cur Hound cross dogs... Most people say cats won't tree here which is true & untrue at the same time... With full running bred hounds only running them I've never seen a cat treed... They end up caught on the ground or bayed on the ground or go in a ground hole or in a bluff or just seem to disappear... For many years I was of the mind set that bobcats were impossible to tree here until one morning a friend of mines running hounds jumped a cat & it came out of the briar patch theyd been bumping it around in & crossed the road headed into another patch of brush & briars.. I turned some of my hounds in and my half heeler half australian sheperd spiked herself in on her own as she seen it when it crossed the road... She was a excellent treedog good squirrel & coondog decent hogdog & any animals worst nightmare in a short race they ran it less than 5 min after that & the race blew up just silence... This had happened 100s of times in the past where hounds was running a cat almost by sight & it just seemed to vanish so I chalked it up as a loss... Anyway the hounds were drifing on hunting trying to find it as they had GPS collars on but my shepherd didnt have one on... Unbeknown to us she had doubled back & got back after the cat or just the cat had set let the dogs pass & doubled back & went up & she just located him idk... She barked treed 150-200 yards off the road & I went to her in the patch of brush there was one of largest tallest blackjack oak trees Ive ever seen growinging & way up in the top out on a giant limb set the bobcat... She had caught other cats on the ground before that the hounds were running but this was the first cat I ever treed... Anyway after that & Ive proved it many times since but I believe 99% of those cats that just seemed to disappear being run sight race I think they went up & the hounds just never located them or just didnt have it in them to look up. Ive had good luck with my cur dogs since then treeing cats dogs that said nothing on track at all they ambush the cat & it had no choice but to go up... Ive also turned hounds that will tree on them almost sight race & the cats went up since then... Its always been a big older growth tree never a small tree...

Wait a minute vines…..thats a good name for them. Reading your comment I began to grin and laugh because it made me think of Ruben Lassman. Ruben used to always say “i like to hear the race but if all I cared about was killing cats id get me some silent cur dogs” he always said hed bet he could catch just as many cats if not more with them and they would all tree.

Sounds like your area is probably a lot like mine. I’ve considered getting some running dogs all I’ve got at the moment is tree dogs and have trailed a couple cats but they always seem to get away which I think my fix would be a couple running dogs. I hunt the Ozarks as well but where I hunt we have none to very little cutover.

Very well done video. Great dogs. Great houndsmen. Great hunt. I’m unclear on one thing though: I got the impression the two packs were striking tracks and being run together. Could you please clarify that? Please tell me that the south texas dogs were striking, trailing and running separately and caught their own bobcats without any aid from a local pack of dogs. Surely they were, so something can be proven by all this, but that point was not made clear in the video. Because if they were run with the southeast Oklahoma dogs the only thing proven was that the Oklahoma dogs were strong enough to overcome the hindrances of running with strange dogs. A lot of bobcat hunters have learned not to allow strange dogs to run with their pack. It is a lot for the dogs to overcome and still do their job. If they were run together it says a lot about the strength of the pack from Oklahoma to overcome that. It proves Absolutely Nothing about the pack from South Texas. They might as well not have been there so the Oklahoma dogs could catch the cat in 25 minutes instead of 40 minutes. (40 minutes is a Long Time in perfect running conditions.) These guys know all this. So CERTAINLY the South Texas dogs were run ALONE! If not, they must be thinking (Hoping) there are no bobcat hunters who watch your channel. Because it is utter silliness to say this proves ANYTHING about the Texas dogs. If they were run together, and this proves the South Texas dogs can consistently catch Mississippi bobcats, you should have brought one of your Southwest Lion hound pups and thrown him in there. Then you could have proven your Southwest Lion dogs can catch Mississippi bobcats just as good as Mississippi bobcat dogs (by catching a cat with Southeast Oklahoma dogs in Southeast Oklahoma). Did I get this right: the goal of this video is to prove that a man in Mississippi is full of ..it. ? And, how many years did you say this has been the goal? Hopefully they ran the South Texas pack alone so the man from Texas can show the man from Mississippi that he caught cats with HIS dogs, and HIS DOGS ALONE, in Oklahoma (in perfect conditions; and in the easiest places, says the Oklahoma man, in fun). Now, on to Mississippi, so he can say HIS dogs caught cats without help in Mississippi. Then, off to the West Coast to prove that they can locate by themselves. In any case, two good dog packs, and a FUN HUNT together! Two cats in three hunts! A Lot of time and money spent making that video; Especially if you throw in the time and money of three men taking several days off work, travel expenses, video equipment, and the immeasurable expenses of raising up two good packs of bobcat hounds. The great effort is appreciated.

@@JonathanHuntandFish-ov8mn I’m not sure what we are proving: 1) that a pack of hounds that have never been out of South Texas can go to Mississippi and catch cats just as good as a pack from Mississippi? Or 2) that the genetics used in South Texas will work just as good as the genetics used in Mississippi? Or 3) some other thing. If it is #1, I guess you would have to find a pack that has not been out of South Texas. And take it directly to Mississippi and hunt that pack without help from local dogs. If it is #2, I guess you would have to find the genetics that the Mississippi man was referring to, and take them to Mississippi and hunt them, without the help of local dogs, until they become accustomed to their new environment, and show that they are genetically just as good as the Mississippi dogs. But the genetics in South Texas has been changing through the years. So how could you even find the genetics the Mississippi man was talking about? I know a South Texas hunter that has added more and more of the registered (cat bred) running walker blood to his pack. He is influential to those around him also. So what was the Mississippi man talking about years ago? Was he saying you can’t come up with dogs in the next ten years, (or however many years), that can match mine in Mississippi? Or was he saying the dogs I used from South Texas years ago didn’t work for me in Mississippi? Or what exactly are we challenging? If we are testing #2 genetic ability, and the Oklahoma dogs in the video are genetically South Texas Dogs; then there was no purpose in the Texas man bringing his dogs all the way from South Texas. Just call the Oklahoma man and ask him if exclusively South Texas genetics is working well for catching bobcats in Southeast Oklahoma. Save a lot of time and money if that is already proven. But again, if the Oklahoma man also has a dog or dogs that are not from South Texas, then the case could be made that the South Texas dogs probably couldn’t do so well on their own without the help of the Non-South Texas dog(s). So then just ask the Oklahoma man to please only hunt the South Texas dogs until you know for sure they can do just as well without the non-South Texas dogs. But what does any of it prove about Mississippi? ...Unless the case is being made that Oklahoma is just like Mississippi. If we are testing #1 environmental ability, then this pack from South Texas is already ruined for taking an exclusively South Texas pack to Mississippi. Especially if someone is making the case that Oklahoma is like Mississippi. Because now they have had practice and local mentorship in an allegedly Mississippi-like environment. So they are no longer being taken to Mississippi from a strictly South Texas environment. Help me out. What are we trying to prove, and What was proven here? Last question: Why does it matter? Take a kid fishing.

@@pegtop5455 I'll give my perspective. This is Derek. First, how did this hunt come about? I go down south and hunt with Cody periodically, so I had extended an invitation for Cody to come up and hunt with me. It's a long ways from Cody's house so it doesn't happen often. Another friend (Brett) offered to come video the hunt, so we did it. We didn't put this whole hunt together for the sole purpose of trying to prove anything. Does it prove anything? Well, yes. Some have said that it's easier to catch cats in south TX than in some other places and for that reason south TX cat dogs don't work in some other places. We did show that dogs that are south TX bred and have been raised in south TX can catch cats in SE Oklahoma, which is very different country than south TX. Cody also made it a point to mention in the video that SE Ok is not Mississippi and that people in other places will still say "they didn't do it here." We all work and don't get paid to drive across the country videoing cat hunts to experiment or prove anything, so who know if the opportunity to go other places and video a hunt will ever happen. If so, then good deal. About running two packs, yes I had 8 dogs in this video. 3 were young dogs so they weren't a deciding factor either way. All three of those are south TX bred. Out of the other 5 dogs, 3 I trained mostly in SE Oklahoma and two I bought out of south TX as trained dogs. All are south TX bred except one of the bought dogs. He's pretty crossed up with mostly running walker, a little July and a little pot licker. If our main goal was to prove something definitively, then yeah we should've left my dogs at home. Again, that wasn't the main point of the hunt. The main point was to go hunting with some buddies and have some fun. Since Brett was willing to travel all that way to video, it provided an opportunity to make something that someone might get some value out of, whether educational or just entertainment. What I like best about it is that there are virtually no other videos specifically showing a southern style bobcat hunt, especially with the twist thrown in of bringing dogs from one type country to another. When I was starting out 20+ years ago, I could've learned something from this video. Hopefully, someone else can now. No matter what the video shows or what any of us said in it, there will always be someone who has enough experience that they don't learn anything from this particular video and there will be some that disagree with something one of us said here for whatever reason. There's such a wide range of challenges with the type of country and the game a person is trying to catch with hounds that it will always be hard to have an apples to apples comparison, let alone document the experiences with all that's involved on video. There is also a wide range of dogs people use. Most videos talk more about the trail hounds but there is still a wide range of dogs within the running dogs. I've heard podcasts where people referred to "running dogs" on the west coast that were really dogs that had a little running dog bred into them but there are a wide range just within the running walker breed. There is a big difference between a one day pen bred dog, a three day dog, a dog bred to catch coyotes in Missouri, a dog bred to run deer, and dogs bred to run fox or cat. All of those can be registered running walker dogs. South TX dogs are just another variation of dog, most of which are primarily running walker with a little bit of something else mixed in over the generations to make dogs that work well with the challenges to catching cats in south TX. Everywhere has a little different challenges and everyone has a little different preference in dogs for a variety of reasons. This video just shows one experience shared by three guys. It was a good hunt. I hope everyone else's next hunt is a good one too. -Derek

@@pegtop5455i can shed a little light on this. First of all the story about the Mississippi argument years ago was just a conversation about what got the idea of filming dogs hunting in different areas started. It didnt have anything to do with what we are doing now. Brett just wanted to talk about what got the idea started. We werent in Mississippi so that alone cancels any proving of that. But a lot of other people had said the same thing about SE Oklahoma. And even east Texas. Most of them are just generalizing “cut over country”. Where logging causes those vines to grow back really thick. Most of them are just basing their opinions off of what they have seen. And thats what caused the argument years ago. What one south texas hunter does is not a reflection of what the entire area does. He had bought some dogs from someone who was a notorious dog trader and I think that ruined his opinion of south Texas dogs. What this hunt was really about was helping my friend Derek. He had some bad luck a few years ago and lost his better dogs. Since then he has had a lot of trouble catching cats. He brought in some dogs from different areas but wasnt having much luck. Then he purchased a pack of dogs from the east coast, treeing walkers, but they didnt work out either. Not saying east coast dogs wont work somewhere, just that those east coast dogs didnt work for Derek. I do believe the reason they didnt work out was because of the area where Derek hunts. It is a very tough place to catch cats in. Derek started coming down and hunting with me to help put some cats on his dogs and train his younger dogs. He got rid of the dogs that werent working for him in that area and started getting some dogs from a few south Texas hunters. The problem was when Derek and I would talk about his hunts and what was going wrong I was essentially having to decipher something that I knew nothing about. Derek was facing a lot of issues up there that we dont face down here in South Texas. Many of nights Derek and I would talk on the phone and I would respond “Hell maybe south texas dogs cant catch cats up there in that stuff” Derek was also hesitant to continue to add south Texas type dogs to his pack if he nor I were certain that they were capable of catching cats up there. Some of the other people Derek talked to had told him not to do that because they probably wouldnt work and Derek still wasnt having any luck. Thats when we decided that the only way we would be able to know for sure and the only way I would be able to to know what was going on was for me to load up and go. And Brett wanted to film and share that story. Brett warned me that if he went he was gonna film the good the bad and the ugly and we laughed and said go ahead. But Brett also wanted to document what I thought the difference were. We got very lucky and conditions were perfect. It rained the night we got there. And Derek knew where to go to the places where he had been starting them. Now that I have been there and seen what Derek has to deal with I have more of an understanding what he is dealing with. That is a very very tough place to hunt and I would hate to have to start from scratch building a pack of dogs that can catch cats in that country like Derek has had to do. Its easy for someone with a trained pack of dogs to show up and be able to catch a couple cats compared to how hard it would be to build a pack there. It was a fun hunt and Brett got to make a pretty cool video of some of the dog work. Theres not many videos around showing that kind of hunting so that was cool too.
