Yeah this came out around the time where Butters was little more than a background character that was primarily used to fill crowd and classroom scenes, it wasn't until Season 3's two guys naked in a hot tub where he actually got a role and a personality which came out a few weeks after the movie's release

Man, it’s hard to hear Trey and Matt talk shit about early South Park. I just watched the first three seasons and the movie. The first 6 episodes are very, very raw. Basically unwatchable. But after that, it’s all awesome. It’s a shame they can’t see it. In many ways I’ll take early South Park over some of the newer stuff which while it looks “better”, the stories can be slow and weak. This movie was a hit for a reason: It’s awesome. And the early seasons from this era were a hit for the same reason.

It seems like a lot of long running shows always have these stigmas surrounding them. It's always something like "The first season is absolute garbage, but by the second season it hit it's stride, and everything after that is a bazillion times better than that crappy first run!" I think that's a bit unfair! The Simpsons seems to get that a lot too, but I can't really agree. I can understand that people's attitudes and opinions can change about stuff that they watched years ago, but I always say "If that first season was truly as bad as everyone says it is nowadays, then the entire show would never have caught on in the first place!" South Park is an example where, in my opinion, the first season is still good, but things started going a bit pear shaped by the second season. But I think that's because Trey and Matt were still kind of figuring South Park out, and it's possible they weren't as involved in that run as much as they were the rest of the show. That being said, I personally don't hate the second season. I've always had a soft spot for it since that was when I first started getting into South Park. I mean, it introduced us to Cartman dressed as a cop shouting "RESPECT MY AUTHORI-TAAH!" Who doesn't love that?

@@bowmaj8666 I think in the case of The Simpsons, the show took such an astronomical leap from seasons 3 up though 7 (that era was truly non-stop brilliance) that the first two seasons are nowhere near it in comparison. On top of that, after their golden combination of writers left around season 8, the show was never the same again. Having said that, you make a valid point: If it weren’t for the first two seasons, there never would have been a third and beyond. The show was successful for a reason. South Park’s evolution is similar, but with some crucial differences. The main one being Trey and Matt were always there (though slightly less-so on season two). But still, after the first handful of episodes, I think the foundation was in place. And season two is great. I know many people don’t think so, including Trey and Matt, but I think it’s awesome. So many smart, classic moments (including Cartman as a cop!). Funny enough, even T&M say in the one of the commentaries that Season 2 is actually pretty good! I suspect the fact that it’s the only season where they gave up some creative control plays a role in their view. Either way, it’s freaking great. So is three, four and the movie. All awesome. I’ll say it again; Early South Park is often better, smarter; and faster than some of the more recent stuff. Definitely more consistent, too. Thee are far fewer episodes that are pretty much duds. Maybe it’s an age thing? That they had nothing to lose back then? Or they always expected their show to be canceled at any moment? Bottom line: I sincerely hope T&M realize that just because the animation was so much less developed (they mention this often), it doesn’t take a thing away from how brilliant much of that early stuff is. I just hope that one day they can learn to see it from the fan’s eyes.

@@Labyrinth1010 It was a success because there were no other alternatives that pushed the boundaries, so it was accepted. It wasn't exactly good to begin with, and that was proven by time itself. I have a lot of nostalgia for Season 1, but it's not a good season in retrospect, and Season 2 was a disaster with so much uninspired tat and poor writing. It wasn't until Season 3 that they got their shit together and started delivering decent content that didn't rely on basic cussing and gross bits.
