South Korea's 'hidden' migrant workers - BBC News

Authorities in South Korea have pledged to improve conditions for the country’s 200,000 migrant workers, after a woman from Cambodia was found dead living in a greenhouse in sub-zero conditions.
Her death is the latest in a series of human rights investigations involving migrant workers in the country, where seventy per cent are charged rent for basic shelter such as greenhouses or shipping containers, even during the harsh winter.
Campaigners have described their employment system as a form of modern-day slavery.

Working abroad especially illegally is very hard.. You have to choose the factories or something in which people usually don't want to work.. I hope someday you return to your own country with a lot of money that you need to be happy there

South Korea's largest migrant workers are from Vietnam, the country they formed a relatively close tie because of a Korean football manager. But since Vietnam is too poor comparing to South Korea, they have to send Vietnamese workers here. Back in 2019, my colleagues were in Seoul. They told me that Vietnamese workers are omnipresent in many Korean companies. Some didn't even want to return home and chose to stay illegally, causing criticism and dislike against these illegal Vietnamese migrant workers among Koreans. But still many Vietnamese wish to migrate, as their economy, despite growing, is still being mismanaged.

Come to south korea and work at these farms If you want to experience terrible living and working conditions. Salaries being delayed for weeks, even months. Some farm owners won't pay you your appropriate salary and some won't even pay you at all. Your boss shout and curse at you while working hard labor 18 hours a day eating the same thing that's been in the fridge for months over and over again. Racism and discrimination are also common. Human and labor rights violations are rampant. There are also cases of physical and sexual abuse! Goodluck! You have been warned.

As a south korean, many koreans have just realized this issue, and we are very infuriated by this inhumane treatment of foreign workers. We shouldn't generalise every foreign worker as potential criminals. The reason why they get involved in criminal act is because of government authority's monitor blind spots!! If the authority had a keen eye on them they can easily keep a track of worker's expiration date of visa, and if necessary they can evict overstay worker as quickly as possible. Not only that, their treatment will be enhanced since authorities have their eyes on them, and they are less likely to get involved in criminal acts. What we need is a system that monitors every foreign workers in Korea!

Secondly, impose strict laws on the matter so that the employers are afraid to do misdeed to their migrant workers. Lastly, we know that people won't help other people unless it is beneficial, it's a sad thing to say but it's the harsh reality of our world. But, there is a way for the government to gain benefits while at the same time helping these workers. For example, the government can ensure that these workers are being well paid matching their job scope and that the safety and human rights of these workers are protected while in return they will improve their foreign relation with the country that provides them labors. This pact must be in a form of a contract between these two countries so that none of them would violate the arrangement. The contract will also ensure that the foreign country will only provide workers with good attitude and social records. As a result, both countries will gain each other's trust and this will further improve their future economic opportunities. However, by doing this. There will be a negative implication where more illegal immigrants will come to the country to work and stingy employers will choose to employ them so that they can pay less. To cope with this, the government must impose strict laws to punish employers who employ illegal immigrants at their premise. In time, there will less and less illegal immigrants in their country.

In the 21st century, many people are still being tortured and are suffering from the excruciating pains. Human beings are the most beautiful organism in the world if we can come together for the same goals. We must move forward as ones with no borders, barriers, discriminations and segregrations. With many people suffering from the tragic slaves, the world leaders should reflect on their behaviours and take actions seriously.

About 2,000 people have died at their workplace a year in Korea Republic. This is "officially reported" number of death, I don't know how many unofficially. Most of them have worked unsafe and small factory or construction site. Also, They are belong to subcontractors and their family can't get enough compensation. National Assembly is passive for revising the labor law. They only speak for conglomerate like Samsung or Hyundai. A boss of company want to make more money, not to secure their workers safety. In addition, they are harsh on their workers, even worse to migrants. Some of migrants are staying in Korea illegally, but they are also human. This is NOT good!

As far as I know there are Koreans live in the same conditions as these migrant workers or even worse! And these migrant workers weren't fooled when they paid a lot of money to brokers to get visas and these jobs. Compared to other neighboring countries in Asia, South korea pays much more to its migrant workers even more than Japan! Of course at this era these conditions and wages aren't acceptable, but this is the case everywhere not only in South Korea where the government is much more caring for migrant workers.

That's why business owners are dying to get migrant workers legally or illegally. And of course the government is obligated to take care of those legal workers because the government brought them there. But those legal workers even can't stand the horrible working conditions in some places so the owners have to take illegal workers. Korea without migrant workers is dead, besides its shrinking population.

Lots of this is happening in the shadows, and the migrant workers can't always communicate (language issues) or raise alarm of poor conditions. Many are also used to significantly worse conditions in their home countries, and are therefore complacent with the poor and unhygienic, by Western standards, that they may live in when working abroad.

Another thing about foreign wives in Korea (doesn't matter North or South) have been treated like a prostitute without getting paid. It's very famous and a regular newspaper article for more than two decades, they build some statue of 'comfort woman' and they are doing the exact same thing to foreigners in Korea. One of their vocabulary 'yagsog' meaning 'promise' came from Japanese, but there was no such concept and probably now, too. 'Yagsog' simply means 'a convenient plan'. For example, many of the visitors in Korea for a first time, they might be surprised about the rule or plan is changing quite often. After a long time observation, there have been no consistent reasons at all. Probably it is caused by an inconvenient plan or a short-term memory, who knows.
