I'm from TN and I live in Seoul. I'm an English teacher there. It's true that there's racism in Korea. I have an African colleague and I've also seen my kindergarten kids asking me why is she black, why am I brown and all such questions. But I'm positive that they're so curious to actually know people's different colors and not in a negative way. I teach them about this immediately like how different geographic regions around the world and also how the genes are responsible for a person's color and it's absoultely fine and should be acceptable with any colored people. It's so shocking to see that among all the other teachers at my school, they love me the most and even treat me as their best friend - one of them even confessed that he loves me more than his mom. So from their perspective, they obviously see and choose a heart of a person and not their color. This is where we adults should take care in what we speak and interact with them. I'm impressed that they could understand this according to their level but it's the duty of the parents and teachers to teach them properly to avoid future conflictions. Personally, I've never experienced racism there. Most of the people are so kind and generous and they actually love Indians - our culture and food. They're so curious to know about our different cultural behaviors, climatic changes, language, etc. To be honest, many people have even truly complimented about my look and face, especially they say that my eyes are beautiful which I mostly haven't heard from Indians - may be because Koreans love bright and bigger eyes, we have double eyelids but they don't. My Korean colleagues and many of my Korean church mates love the fact that I'm an Indian and love Indian stuff. They all support me as much as they can and I'm very glad and grateful about it. Also about the make up thing, its damn true that even some Koreans expect their own people to look good. One of my colleagues shared her story about her previous job where her manager lady insisted her to wear make up because she thinks that without make up, people wouldn't be pleased to see them. I personally don't wear make up for myself but still haven't asked by any Koreans about it. They simply like the natural look on Indians (don't know about others though). So, I think the future generations would come to know better and treat people better. Let's hope for the best!!

That's true tho..only some old school and illiterate people tend to be racist in every country not just Korea but in every country including India. I hope this generation will not follow their ancestors regarding colourism. And that's a positive response I've read here.. thanks for updating us on the other side of Korea too. My husband worked for KIA motors for 2 yrs, they had the worst work culture as well. We lived there in Penukonda, Anantapur, and yeah it's always there .. they don't allow Indians inside restaurants mainly. All super pricy and smells pungent. However we didn't face any issue with korean retail shops like Seoul and few more.

Im pasting my reply here so other Indians know why thats happening and how to fix it. "I get it, I’m NRI. but always remember what our ancestors contributed to the world : number system, zero, yoga, spirituality, textiles, first surgery, meditation etc etc The reason is we modern Indians suffer is that after 800 years of foreign invasion have forgotten who we are. We are smart, capable, intelligent, refined. Our cultural arts also prove how great and refined our ancestors were. But us modern Indians? We are lazy, close minded, egoistic and don’t THINK much. Meanwhile all the extraordinary philosophy in upanishads, vedas etc was cos our ancestors were great minds too. Why do i keep bringing up our ancestors you ask? Because they are a mirror to us. Their blood runs through us. For 1000s of years India was the golden land, Europeans sought India and found America. In China one of their most famous and historical books is “journey to the West” which is all about reaching India to get the Buddhist scriptures. And not to mention the Indian influence via Buddhism and Hinduism for 1000 years on South East Asia and East Asia. Basically Ancient India was that coveted because of the achievements of our ancient Indian ancestors. Modern India isn’t, because we the modern Indians aren’t matching our ancestors. Let’s first match their achievements first, and change the society and watch how the world again reverts back to India. Keep hope, and fight on. Make India proud. Jai hind."

I have worked for Samsung and stayed in South Korea for 1 year. There are people in both ends of the spectrum there. Some are very kind. For example it was the first day and me and my friend lost track of the way to our hotel. We just had the address with us. We asked a person and he walked 2 blocks with us and got us back to the hotel. I became close friend with a Korean person in office. He used to help me all the time. When I left, he even arranged a party for the entire team out of his own pocket. I witnessed some experiences on the other spectrum too. A senior person in office complained that Indians had a bad odor and it became a big issue in office and he was given warning.

I went to Thirupathi for the first time with my friends…..we don’t know the common line and so me and friend asked help from one temple Iyer…… I touched him becoz becoz he I didn’t here me properly.. After touching him, he behaved like very extreme…..he seen me as alien and untouchable…..highly scolded us in his language…… After this incident, I am not planning to go for Thirupati…..

I have myself felt this in Vienna Austria. I use to go with full firmal suit to office in Tram but locals dont come and sit near us. We were not allowed in certain pubs stating that we were singles but they allowed white singles inside. When you launch a complaint police say that property is private and they hold the right to allow who they want.

I agree it was earlier months and months but not now. We literally travelled in busses and metro trians many shopping centers, it was all normal. The ppl might not be too friendly like thai or any other country, the reason is they dont know English as thr govt supports thr language more than English. They know Japanese Chinese and korean. But sure thing this is not a situation thr. Such a lovely country it was. Our best trip ever.

not only in india's korean resturant in sri lanka there's this town my father's town is basically chinatown cuz it is the biggest gemtown and my cousins are acquaintance with some Chinese. but the thing there's restaurants which we can't enterand they brought waiters and chefs everyone from chaina

I travel to Korea regularly. I haven't faced such issues. Koreans have different etiquette. In public places we should not speak loudly, like in lift or in metro. But Indians make loud conversations, they will tell not to do so, as it is their common culture. Same way there are many pubs which have celebrity foot fall, where only rich can enter in itaewon. I think small incidents are getting blown out of proportion. I have faced racisim much more than this in smaller visits to Bali or US. In Bali we can't go window shopping , they will ridicule you and chase you away. Impression is Indians won't buy anything. In US , the homeless people will curse you saying you are here to take away jobs. They will shout to go to your country etc etc. It's very common. I have been to many restaurants and all in Korea, in fact they are extremely polite and respectful people.

அழகுங்குறது.. ஆரோக்கியமா சுத்தமா இருந்தால் போதும்... அறிவா.. இருந்தா போதும்... Over make up, அழகுக்காக operation இதெல்லாம் ஆரோக்கியத்த அழிச்சிடும்.. கை கால் சுகத்தோட நம்மள நாம சந்தோஷமா ஏத்துக்கிட்டு லாழ்வது தான் உண்மையான அழகு... . அழகைப் பற்றிய பார்வை அந்த மக்களின் திடமில்லாத மனசக் காட்டுது.... .

I studied in foreign for 6 years…I would like to share other side of this issue These discrimination starts from cultural differences.Few examples 1) Our way of cooking like thalikurathu ,or using some strong masala. Cause them asthma exacerbation. 2) They are not comfortable when we speak loud in bus or sneeze loudly. They do all these in minimal voice. 3) we not knowing there local language.Make them feel we are disrespecting or taking there culture in vein. 4) In there culture if any adult see women,old people and children standing in bus or metro,it is like mandatory to give seat for them. Some things like what you showed also do happen but not that often may be once or twice in a year. Many instances they do respect us. They would appreciate India for Multi- lingual, Multi - religious, Multi Cultural co existence.
