South Jackson, Mississippi Ride Around (05/01/2021)

I had some free time before work this morning so I road around the old Forest Hill and Wingfield high schools and took a ride down McDowell Rd. Then I finished it off with a ride around the mostly abandoned Meteocenter shopping mall in Jackson, Mississippi.

Really appreciate you taking the time to give me a tour of my home town man! I recognized a lot of my old stomping grounds, but especially enjoyed seeing my grandparents old house on the corner of Scanlan Dr next Wingfield HS. It's sad to see a place that brought me so much joy in that condition! None the less, it brought back a lot of good memories and I will never forget my S Jxn days growing up! They can have it now, bc we had it when it was good...

Killer video and really appreciative of it. Grew up in Rankin county but spent lots of time traveling around South Jackson (McDowell, Raymond, Hwy 18) in the 80s & 90s. Thx a ton for the video.

Definitely lots of memories for me on the sights. I grew up just off McDowell near Key Elementary. Church at what was then “McDowell Road Baptist Church” across from Appleridge. Went to Peeples and Jim Hill. Played little league and Babe Ruth baseball at Battlefield. Used to turn off of Hwy 80 at the Moose Lodge to go to the pony league field that was on the left side of the road going to the back of the Metro Center. I noticed those ball fields were gone. I remember when Metro Center opened…. Yeah, been a few years. Sad to see the shape they were all in.

I want to thank you for putting up the ride around videos. I grew up in Jackson. I graduated from Jim Hill High school in 1981. After that, I graduated from Millsaps College. I also went to Whitten Jr High in South Jackson. I grew up in Washington Addition area near Jackaon State University. I left Jackson and moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1999. The last time I was in my hometown Jackson was in 2007 for my grandmother's funeral. Whenever I get homesick I go and watch the videos you put up on KZread. I watch them multiple times. Please continue the ride around videos for us who are don't live in Jackson anymore. I see a lot has changed and closed since the last time I visited my hometown. My biggest shock was the closing of Metrocenter Mall. Even the Kroger on Daniel Lake was open when I was last there. It was a newer store then. Now I found out thru your videos that it is closed. South Jackson was a booming area when I was growing up. I don't know what happened to make South Jackson go down like it has. Keep posting the ride around videos for us to see. I am planning to take a vacation trip to Jackson soon and would love to shake your hand for curing my home sickness. Take care.

I enjoy these trips thru Jackson. I left in 1992. Been to the Kroger on Raymond road many times. My mom worked for a fabric store at Apple Ridge shopping center in the 70s. It may have been called Cloth World.

I don’t think you quite drove by it but i used to swim at the old community pool, which I think it’s called Raymond Road extension. You were right around the corner from it especially when you were at the corner of Suncrest and McDowell. It was right down the street from the bike rack.

I'm 46 now and live outta state. But I grew up on the southside, specifically McDowell/Raymond Rd. That shopping center had a Winn Dixie(later became Jitney Jungle or was it vice versa?) a TG&Y, and an Eckerd's Drug Store(later bought out/became Rite-Aid). Lotta good memories from down there back in the day. Thanks for sharing and if you ever want to collaborate or trade stories, hit me up

@7:57 I hear you on that Facebook copyright crap. it's really annoying. I mean, I'm not trying to play music as a feature of the video to make the video better and therefore using the music as a part of the content I'm creating..................It's like, believe it or not I listen to music when I do stuff. and I'm listening to music because I like it. Not because I'm trying to make my video better. Yeah, so as a content creator not allowed to use music I like to listen to. It's a big pain in the ass. I'll upload a video of me mixing some ink and the stereo will be playing in the background and will take down my video because I was listening to music while I worked. I wish there was some common ground on that.
