The term "on the spectrum" didn't exist yet. In the earlier episodes, it's mentioned that he was a product of a crack addicted mother.

In the pilot episode it was mentioned that she had an older son that was in a gang and fell victim to it. It's possible that since she failed to protect her oldest from the streets, she doesn't want the same fate to happen to Andre, hence her being hard on him and giving him more responsibility. She wants to keep him grounded and occupied from street activities.
