Bigbang was the highest earning group in the world before they left for hiatus. First group to win Western music awards, first group to chart on billboard with a Korean album. Their world tour was attended by 1.5 million people. So they were definitely world-wide.

GD wrote this rap for Mnet and MAMA, who are unfairly handing out prizes. The following year, because the seats were not occupied, MAMA sent Bigbang a special invitation. In 2016 and 2017, they did not go because the injustice continued. Later they enlisted in the military. And MAMA was never able to turn the awards ceremony into a concert again. In their 16 years of career, Bigbang only released 3 full albums..now imagine how groups these days need to drop music every month to stay relevant..this is the difference between Bigbang and other groups..Relevancy over popularity anytime..Bigbang is also the group to undergo hiatus most of the time…they don’t promote like others do..And back in the day without promoting in west they were already a worldwide phenomena..I really wish newbie kpop reactors to dig deeper before making such remarks..🙏

You don't compare BIGBANG to other groups. That's how high their level is. They've set the KPOP standards of today with those different fashion styles, live performances (not lip sync), quality songs, crazy M/V concepts, etc. They did it all first 😉

You should check out the lyrics of GD in the intro. It was actually a diss rap to MAMA awards itself yet they got invited the next year 🔥 It was a also a rap created backstage before they go to perform. GD was so pissed that day because he thinks that MAMA award was so biased in giving awards and to his rap he said that they should give credits to those new idol whose working hard and stop giving them more awards because just like an adult child they are already full.

Actualy BIGBANG is very much global . First artist to have 2 albums on Billboard is GD , first to win an international award BigBang 2011 MTV EUROPE, beat Britney Spears, first to have a big world tour 2012 Alive Tour , you should have seen the crowds awaiting them in Mexic at the hotel. GD was named by CNN one of the reasons Seoul is the best City. In 2016 BigBang was voted in Time magazine top most influencial people , nr2 if I remember right , got more votes than president Obama . Made tour 2015 was the biggest tour of a korean group until recently 1.5 mil tickets sold . BigBang made it into Forbes magazine top for money they earned. GD's 3d solo world tour 2017 is the biggest for a solo korean artist over 600 000 tickets , he alone sold more than BTS same year . All this was done without any promotions done in the west . Imagine if BigBang did promotions for these 5 years instead of going into military . In 2017 between the group tour and solo tours of Taeyang , Daesung and GD they sold like 2 mil tickets.

Both groups are literally from different generation bruh..It’s like comparing Micheal Jackson with Bruno Mars..Bigbang is from that era when internet was not even a thing so mass streaming was not even an option..We fans had to download mp3 in our Nokia 200 or wait for Pops in Seoul (only korean TV show that broadcast Kpop music back in the day in my country) just to watch Bigbang’s song and that was the real struggle of OG fans which newer Kpop fans can never relate..But despite those limitations to internet access, Bigbang were the first Kpop group to go international and break into western market..They even won best worldwide act award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards beating Britney Spears..Also their album became the very first Kpop album to reach top 10 on US iTunes Chart and chart on the US billboard 200. They were also the first Kpop group to surpass 300 million views on KZread on an MV. In 2017 they became the best selling boyband surpassing Backstreet Boys and highest earning boyband even surpassing Maroon 5..These are the only few of the achievements..They are the first to many..And we have to agree that records are bound to break and also their records got broken while they were in hiatus..But that 16 years old group with 5 years hiatus is breaking record here and there with their comeback which was not even promoted..I would really like to see if any Kpop group with all the shits that Bigbang have gone through over the years could really stand tall and relevant like Bigbang did..I don’t think it’s wise move to compare popularity without knowing Bigbang’s legacy..period..

The reason why Big bang is not "that big" is because last time K pop was not big. Its really hard to go outside korea or asia or even to the west. Internet is kinda new in some parts of the world at that time so K pop is unheard of. Now internet is everywhere and everybody knows K pop so the chance of idol group become big is higher. Now, people do stupid stuff can go viral and famous around the world. Its crazy. Is hard for the 1st and 2nd gen idol group to become big. Last time was hard but Big Bang still manage to go big.

Bigbang was recognize in the world. Hallyu Wave started in second generation. They won MTV Award in category "worldwide act ". In the category was also Britney Spears nominated( She was the pop princess at the time). Their success is naturally without any promotion in the us and less social media activity. It was a different time era. Like you said, Nowadays is much easier go viral. Most of people in asia (especially older fans) would definitely know about BIGBANG.

As a Korean born in SK and have lived overseas, I witnessed how BIGBANG became so big without their dedicated fans influencing their rise outside of South Korea. BIGBANG built its reputation through music. They reached worldwide listeners during a time when the internet was slow and expensive. When technology like smartphones was a luxury. When all the digital systems were still in development. When excessive idol video content on apps like Vlive, Weverse, and KZread was non-existent, or even when they don't attend western tv shows. Kpop fans during those early years genuinely discovered and liked Kpop. BIGBANG became the biggest favorite even when the group themselves didn't promote besides Japan. Heck, fans struggled so much with video translations during those times but that never stop them from loving the group When BIGBANG went on their first world tour they didn't expect they had so many fans around the world. They were never prepared for it because they didn't have the slightest idea they were known everywhere. That's how the rest of the idol industry realizes that the Kpop market has grown. That's why everyone always says BIGBANG is the blueprint. They were always leading and taking risks. If technology was as advanced as today, BIGBANG would have reached a global market within 3 years.

THIS! As a VIP in Nepal, with slow internet connections back in 2012 when I became a fan, it was HARD to find their content WITH eng subs. PLUS, they did so little variety shows, unlike other groups. Fans of idols nowadays are flooded. I think we all felt so happy with whatever we could get. Celebrities in Korea went to BigBang concerts then. Please correct me, but usually idols were not treated as talents and the general public would turn up their noses. Love it, or Hate it, when Bang Bang Bang was released, I read somewhere that it was used to blast across the DMZ. (border of north and south korea) LOL

We literally didnt have KZread nor internet connections other than in cafes back when BIGBANG debut...yet we hear them in every store and parties...pplz who dsnt know them still know their songs.....its crazy how far their music went. and im from Northeast INDIA

When BIGBANG made Alive World tour in 2012, they sold out shows in the US, when they went to Peru, the only Latin american country for that tour, people from all over south america went. All this without even marketing towards the west. I was very lucky to see them perform for the first time then here in LA. Also social media wasn't even a thing back then. And with BIGBANG's quality and uniqueness... lol you just can't compare.

in 2016, according to Forbes, Big Bang beat Maroon 5 as one of the highest-earning celebrities. and it got from the MADE Series world tour. so if you say they are not worldwide, hmm I don't think so.

BigBang IS still worldwide their recent comeback single is still trending on the Billboard charts worldwide, it's not by accident. If it wasn't for co-vid they would have done Coachella from 2020.

Bigbang captured the Chinese market and GD was not concerned about getting into going global TBH. They make music because they want to and for the VIPs

Bigbang was already BIG even before this "trending" thing. They don't need billion views to prove they are on a different level.

BB and BTS both are big but they came from different eras so you cant really compare IMO. Like BB came from 2006 (2nd gen), 7 years before BTS (3rd gen). And the whole world esp without much accessible internet and social media will have different impact. BB and other 2nd gen opened the whole kpop wave first in Korea and Asia, and with younger group they be able to spread to Europe and West. Well both are great group and has a hand to the popularity of kpop basically. Thanks for the reaction👍

Exactly! I'm from Mexico and back in the day I couldn't find lyrics or subtitles for anything, the quality of the shows were bad, they were hard to find (like, you watched part 1 2 3 but couldn't find the rest of a show) and on top of that the slowest internet hehehe nothing like now days... Big Bang was the reason I learned English, they were the reason I started to learn Korean. Their music means a lot to me, and is not only the music I feel like I grown as a person. VIP forever

People hate to hear it, but BigBang is really one of the k-pop acts to build the path BTS is walking on.

BB is definitely worldwide the fact that they're charting worldwide to an unpromoted and physically not sell song is a flex. And many big western names, celebs, companies, fashion brands, etc knew them is saying something. Just look it up they are mentioned everyone especially gd

Justin B, Snoop Dog, Will I Am collab with YG artists way back 2nd gen kpop b4 internet became a free access to all ages worldwide. Yt views r never the benchmark of popularity. Bigbang held numerous world tours for a decade. And FYI Psy was a YG artist with BB when he paved way to kpop world wide. But BB didn't want to recustomized kpop culture for western approval. BB chose to stay Loyal to Korean pop genre as it is with their songs. Even 2ne1 marked global history by winning the 2011 MTV Iggy Awards in NYC even with pure Korean songs.

This is an era where other idols has great reaction and enjoyed the show, they’re not afraid to show their excitement and in this video it’s more wild bcs Bigbang must be the last to performed which is already passed 10pm so minors have to go home.. These days award show became more serious and stiff since idols afraid to make any reaction to any performances because of the shipper and rumors will hit them the next day if they get caught interacting with others

As to the Bigbang “wasn’t worldwide” comment. I understand that kpop has seen growth in the recent years but to southeast asia and the rest of asian countries, a little bit in the americas and europe, Bigbang was big even without social media. Remember, Glee the TV series even used Wow Fantastic Baby to show how western bou groups can learn from kpop boy groups and Bigbang was not even promoting in the US at the time but they have that reach already. They debuted in 2006 when youtube was relatively new, no twitter yet and social media was not even part of the “metrics” to know of someone is famous and yet they were touring the world in the early 2010’s. Some kpop fans don’t even know that there are a lot of music shows, how to win and even the fact that there are more groups than just the popular ones from the big entertainment companies. In fact I will never know BTS in their early days if they did not go head to head with Bigbang for a music show win. Bighit is a small company back then.

BigBang beat Gotye in MTV Emma, won Best Worldwide Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Belfast. I don't believed BigBang were not globally famous. BigBang had their MADE concert tour in USA and Europe too.

Well, you cannot compare legends to popular group Look at bb, their 2007 onward songs are still topping the charts in kora, vietnam etc. no one is doing it like bigbang. Their popularity is organic- no sns, no yt views competition- pure talent. And btw bb reaches worldwide without even them promoting overseas before. They are even the first kpop idols who won international awards back in 2011 not only one but 2 awards and they are also the first kpop song who debuted on billboard charts with fantastic baby even before gangman style of psy. Take note they are not promoting in the us market that time

Lets not compare popularity over relevancy.. that is the problem with these newbie Kpoppers. I mean lets not run our mouth if we don’t know anything about Bigbang’s legacy. Bigbang is 'the standard of kpop' for boygroups, whatever you see now in Kpop, it has been done by Bigbang first specially Gdragon i mean even before Bigbang became Bigbang they are already making their own name (solo) GD started his career at the age of 6. He is the Michael Jackson of South Korea starting his career at the early age and helped revolutionized Kpop same as what MJ did to Pop.

That's another thing when it comes to Bigbang there is "no fandom" everyone who loves kpop loves them. You cant be a fan of kpop if you 'don't know Bigbang specially Gdragon' Their name is equal to Legacy.

That’s not actually true. BB performed in MAMA 2015 too, after the diss took place, so… There’re other things that happened behind the scene, which we have no idea about.

BTS are definitely more popular than any other kpop group but you have to compare things that are comparable, it is A LOT easier to become popular nowadays than when Bigbang debuted in 2006, the internet, social media, mass streaming didn't exist/weren't as developed before, plus times have changed, even today BTS face discrimination because they're asian, imagine back when Bigbang was active? Yet with all that Bigbang managed to be known worldwide (1.5M attendance for their last tour), also Bigbang are HUGE in Asia, they dominate China and Japan like no other group today yet it is often glossed over cuz it's not the west Another thing, Bigbang's last album was in 2016, that's 6 years ago and they just released an unpromoted song (they haven't even done one live performance) that has been smashing records in south Korea, it's been #1 since its release 3 weeks ago, no other kpop group could come back from hiatus and scandals and not promote and do that

My grandma has no idea who Justin Bieber is, but it doesn't mean Justin Bieber not worldwide-known. I know that both of u still new to this kpop world. But, it's really annoying when hearing you guys compared Bigbang to BTS. I mean, would u compare Michael Jackson to Justin Bieber????? They are from different era and with different level. And one thing for sure, Bigbang doesn't make music for the "west-market". They could if they want, but they choose not to. And the "west-validations" for popularity or legendary are not the things they want to achieve (!) not then, not now. They make music because they love it and for VIPs. They even said, if you don't like their music, just go and play another artist's song. "popularity" is not their purpose, but make high quality music and high quality performances are. And of course, this kind of philosophy couldn't relate with nowadays-fandom-culture when they think high quality musician equals YT's views or the so called validation from billboard or US-market 😆

Thank God, someone already wrote this, before I should 😁 and speaking about Korean Entertainment (cancel) culture, it's such an exceptional case when Bigbang's music still accepted by South Korea's general public, after all those kind of scandals, bad press-release, and military service. That's because they showed their true self and their true personality from the start. That they just want to make great music. I did the same thing (unsubscribed) and i agree with everything u just said 👍 although i did not dislike the vid and i "might" still watch their future vids, but am not subscribing anymore 😅 it's just a little annoying when people compare them. They should keep in mind that YT, Twitter and socmed in general ain't a thing back then. U can't measure someone's popularity based on the yt views. Just look at Celine Dion's mvs - they don't have those 500mil+ views but u can't ever say that she's not popular or her songs weren't popular "worldwide", right? Just saying..

There’s no point in comparing BB and BTS. There’re from different generations. And if BB really wanted to be bigger in the west, I think they could have been. YG would have done something in that regard. But that wasn’t their main focus. I know BTS is huge ( and I respect their achievements ), but people need to understand that wouldn’t be possible without the groups that came before them. Kpop was already known globally to some extent even before BTS. If that wasn’t the case, if kpop was really unknown, then it would have been impossible for them to became this big. Or if not impossible, then for sure much harder. So comparing them it’s not ok.

BB definitely has no intention to focus on the west. Because their lyrics are so hard to translate in english. Koreans say BB uses expression in korea that have no english word. But are poetic and are considered art

BTS though phenomenal is still far from BIGBANG. The video you watched was 2014. BB changed the whole kpop industry in terms of music, fashion, and structure. They were trendsetters. They were widely popular when YT is still new, internet isnt available for all, social media is still at its genesis, music streaming like spotify have not yet existed, and kpop is still exclusive in Asia. During these times, nobody knows about kpop but in 2012 they were already doing world tours with more than 1M attendees worldwide. Winning European Music Awards and entering Billboard charts. Just think about this. When did these "worldwide" kpop groups rose to popularity? It was when BIGBANG entered the military. Also, after the long hiatus and scandals, BIGBANG released a mellow song without any promotion and yet topping the charts for weeks now. Imagine if BIGBANG did not enter the military and continued to produce music in the advent of technology and social media. Wouldnt you agree that theyll become even more "popular" than any group right now?

I'm in my thirties, from Argentina, and the first Korean song I ever heard was BigBang. The impact they had (and still have), and with fewer platforms, can't be compared to anyone else.

How is bigbang not that big lol they just didn't bother to go to West for promotions. You didn't live in that era
