I can tell you as a retired US Army Sargent Major the A-10 is what any marine or army unit would like to see overhead when they’re in trouble the problem goes away
As a former army infantry, the Warthog was the angel looking over us 👍

The nickname "Warthog" was given to the plane by ground troops because when it fires it's gun it makes a grunting sound like a pig.

I had always heard it was because how ugly it was. Didn't mean they didn't love it, but when it came out it was nothing like like the sleek profile of previous jets.
If you want to hear people sing the praises of the A-10... ask the ground troops they love it. Many have said that they owe their lives to the A-10.

The Americans flying for China 1941-42 were called the Flying Tigers and put a mouth on the front of their planes.
We always called A-10s the death zipper because of the sound of the main cannon. They tried to get rid of it a few years ago and the ground pounders complained so much they decided to just upgrade it. That is really saying something.

The AirForce has the AC 130 but I'd nlove to see how low that plane can go. I think they can only stay in the area like 5 minutes. The A-10's can spend a lot longer looing for targets
The planes at the end you asked about were F22 Raptors which are considered the most dangerous fighter jets in the world. A10 is a 50 year old platform but they really did age well

The A-10 is primarily stationed at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson Arizona. It is the most maneuverable and effective support aircraft for ground forces in the world.
This was a 1970s plane brother upgraded many times. I sat in one on a field trip in Jr high in 1976
They say if you hear the Brrrrrrrrr sound from the warthog, then you wasn't the intended target. The bullets have already hit and killed the target before the sound catches up.
As a 20 year Veteran of the USAF I'm proud our job was to drop "Warheads on Foreheads"!
Warthog is a Gatling gun cannon that fires uranium bullets, with an airframe attached.
Its affectionately called warthog because its a slower speed ground attack and support platform thats less sleek and showy than other high speed jets, its designed to assist ground troops, kill tanks and other machines as well as other support roles. Now the A10 has been significantly upgraded in many ways and is even better than before, the platform has been around a long time and has performed so well its survived many who called for its retirement, but i think the updated version will be around for a long, long time. Our troops often call in the A10 when they need air support and theyre always glad to see this bird of prey show up in their behalf on the battlefield
The pilots so chill cause if your the type that gets rattled over anything their not going to put you in the pilots seat
I think the word you were looking for when talking about the control panel not having a lot of stuff is " Minimalistic "
The ammunition magazine has a capacity of 1,174 and fires at a rate of 3900 rounds per minute. I was once told that the actual airspeed of the A10 slows when the gun is firing. Given that airspeed is reduced, to increase ease of accuracy, when firing, it has been estimated that it would take 20 to 47 seconds to slow the "Hog" down to "stall speed". The gun would run out of ammunition very slightly over 19 seconds IF fired continuously. That being said, the gun is rarely fired in bursts of over 4 seconds.
@tinkerscorner54

There are actually two firing rates available to the pilot. I don't remember exactly what the other number was, but it seems like it was around 1600 rpm or so. Maybe even lower. Either rate is effective, but I remember hearing the lower rate near the practice range once (near where I went fishing) and it was definitely a different, lower, more guttural sound. My buddy from the flightline described it as a " really Raunchy Fart". The higher rate is more the "Brrrrttt" sound.
4:28 the A-10 is so feared in the Middle East sometimes all the A-10 needs to do is be seen before the enemy starts to flee
They tried to decommission these for some reason, didn’t work when everyone threw a fit to keep them in the air
As they say in the services, if you hear the A-10 coming, it wasn't meant for you. NY to Los Angeles is almost 4500 km.
Kim Cambell (now Colonel Cambell, USAF (Ret) ) flew her aircraft back using the A-10s survivability features that no other aircraft flying possesses.
Brilliant. I’m so glad you checked out the A-10. I’m in California and we have Fleet Week in San Francisco in October. Our naval fleets and war planes, even public airlines. The most awesome air show are the Blue Angels. I love your subjects. Cheers🎉
The "Warthog" names comes about because the plane lakes the clean, graceful lines of a typical Airforce "Fighter" aircraft.
The A10 entered service in 1972 and was designed in the 60's. 50+ years old!
The sound of freedom goes BRRRRRRRTTTTTTT!
I was in the USAF. Through all my years serving, the A10 is one of my favorite aircraft.
Served 8 yrs in the U.S. Army & seen this beast up close as it saved our ass in Afghanistan...
The Warthog name comes from the fact some people think the A-10 is "ugly". And the motto of the A-10 pilots is "Go Ugly Early".
You said something about the nose painting of the plane. The one with all the teeth was from the WW2 group, Flying Tigers. No one else can use it, so another group came up with the Cobra mouth. Or none at all. The in the air refueling is something. My son, when he was in the AF, did the fuel hose connecting. He did it in the Air Forse, and in the Veit Nam war I was in the Navy, on a fleet Oiler, that fueled, supplied frozen and dry food, and ammo, to the ships off shore. The carriers love us, like a all you need, one stop store.
I got to sit in the cockpit. You’re sitting on the massive gun and surrounded by a titanium bathtub. Felt invincible.

Ironically enough, the A10 are sometimes known as the "Grunts in the sky".
The flashy things in the cockpit you're talking about.... They moved that stuff to inside the pilot's helmet display.
US Army Cold War Era Veteran here, 11B (Infantry)/ 15D (Lance Missile Crewman), the A-10 is a Godsend. We make fun of the Air Force in General, but 2 parts of it we won’t, A-10 pilots and AC-130 Crews. Speaking of which, if you haven’t yet, you should react to a video about the AC-130 “Angel of Death”.
The Shark mouth is from the old Flying Tigers Unit of WWII. In combat an A-10 had a SAM go through its right wing over Bagdad and returned to Saudi Arabia and landed safely so it is a tough aircraft. It has 11 positions to mount ordnance with 4 on each wing and 3 under the fuselage.
My heart and thanks go to all military personal that fights for all of us.
In case you didn’t catch it, it shoots those beer bottle size rounds at a rate of over 3,200 rounds per minute. Ohh and those rounds explode lol
Its kind of like the little old lady who, when stopped speeding, informed the officer that she was armed. The officer thanked her and asked her where it was located. She said well, i have a 9mm in my purse, a .38 calibur derringer in my sock, a .45 calibur pistol in the glove compartment. The officer looked at her wide-eyed, and said, thats alot of guns ma'am, just what are you afraid of? She looked him in the eye, then winked, and said, not a d@mn thing honey! Same level of cool as those pilots LOL
"Warthog" is merely an affectionate nickname from ground troops. Its actual designation is the A-10 Thunderbolt II. The "Shark's Teeth" was from Claire Lee Chenault's AVG (American Volunteer Group), the original Flying Tigers from pre-WW2 combat against the Japanese in China. I was fortunate to be stationed at the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing (The Flying Tigers) at Chenault Field in Alexandria, Louisianna, back in the 1980's as a Weapons Controls Systems Technician in the 23rd Component Repair Squadron. My one "Claim to Fame" was that I specialized in the calibration of the Heads-Up Display for the aircraft, as well as other associated Avionics equipment. Basically, I insured that those 30mm rounds impacted exactly where the crosshairs indicated, and not merely just "Within Tolerance" (which could be easily 3 or 4 feet, or more, off target if not done properly). I took probably twice as long as other technicians to do it but, when Red Flag or any other event came around, I was the technician that was requested to work on their "HUDs" prior to deployment (At least with the Savvy Pilots). (The base has since been closed. What a shame.) Although the A-10 was slated to be retired in the early 1990's, it proved to be too valuable of an asset to get rid of. It met and exceeded all expectations and was one of the few times where the Air Force got way more than they bargained for.
The gun in the A-10 is so powerful that it actually slows the aircraft down and can cause a stall if it could be fired long enough. There are a few videos out there that show it in more detail and the plane is actually built around the gun that has an ammo loading system as big as a small car. The avionics and targeting systems have gone through several upgrades, despite attempts to kill the program. But too many former ground pounders are now serving in the Congress and have had their butts saved by the A-10 and know its value as close air support. The original had a low kill rate with the gun because of the difficulty keeping the gun on target but today the targeting is computer controlled and can put rounds in a tight radius or larger area depending on the need. Even better is the ability to track battlefield data and avoid fratricide incidents; some early cases of this were the result of misidentification of targets (notably allied forces) by Combat Air Controllers or incorrect enemy locations by friendly forces leading to friendly fire incidents. With the F-35's new advanced targeting systems being able to set targets for munitions carried by other aircraft, the heavy lifting capability of the A-10 will see it having a new job as a Missile Truck for the stealthed F-35 as it spots targets in enemy territory with impunity, allowing the F-35 to remain stealthed (a feature nullified once it opens its weapons bay doors) while targeting the enemy and the A-10 to remain safely out of SAM detection distance, firing missiles and glide bombs at targets it can't even see.
They started basic in the 1970s but now they’ve got upgrades that make them cutting edge.
The plane was heavily updated the warthog to is a lot more advanced it'll surprise you how big of an upgrade it is to bring it into the future
When designing this craft many experts were approached and their imput helped shape the final version. One of those contributors was Hans Ulrich Rudel, the foremost Stuka ace of WWII.
Forces on the ground sure love this thing coming to their rescue. It does what it's supposed to do. Close air to ground support.
The difference between a B-2 and an A-10 is. The B-2 is a scalpel the A-10 is a sledgehammer backed up by an anvil.

The argu, ent is they were too old and too slow. That was before the upgrade to warthog II I don't know how many planes can safelty return to base with one wing, and one engine missing
Maybe as tall as a beer bottle... 30mm is the diameter of the cannon's bore. It fires over 50 rounds per second.
Of you want to hear a big. Fast jet taking off, flying/flaying by…look up the B-1, known as the Bone. Now that’s a jet/bomber with engine power and speed.

I spent 6 years attached to a Marine Corps Tank Company at a range at Camp Pendleton I was very impressed by the A10 releasing Hell on Earth.
I worked with an army guy and he said the soldiers celebrated when onf of these showed up to support them.

A Fun Fact: The twin tail of the A-10 has more surface area than the tail of a B-52. The twin rudders and the "barn door" ailerons and lower speed give it the ability to outfly and out maneuver durn near any other aircraft, period.
@Jono Graham Reacts - if you want to see more about the A-10 when it comes to its inner workings, or just more detailed information overall about how awesome this plane is, I'd suggest checking out the "Insane Engineering of the A-10 Warthog." F-15 and F-16 pilots hated the A-10 at Red Flag. One second, they were in their sights and the next second, they (F-15/16 pilots) were "Out" before they could get missile lock. The A-10, with those huge "Barn Door" ailerons and rudders could turn and fire a whole lot quicker than the other pilots could react. A 30mm round doesn't really care if it's a ground target or not, and gun cameras don't lie.
Be yourself and say what you feel. Haters well sadly always exist. I subscribe to you for your blunt honesty
I understood everything you were trying to say when questioning yourself, and it makes sense. Please don’t se sir yourself for a few idiots. We’re here for your genuine reaction
I live in Michigan and the A-10s fly over my town from time to time, sometimes so low you can almost make out the pilots. They are dead silent till they pass by
The B2 is sleek, the A-10 isn't there or trying to win any beauty contests (but if it's supporting you, it looks really nice), those were F-22 Raptors flying side by side.
I went to an air show at Nellis Air Force Base, NV just outside of Las Vegas and they had an A10 there for everyone to go up to an inspect. The pilot let me put my thumb inside one of the barrels of the gattling gun and there was a little room left over. According to the pilot at the time they used 3 types of rounds for the gun, an aluminum, incendiary and spent uranium round. Apparently the spent uranium round goes through tank armor like butter. The gattling guns barrel apparently is half the length of the aircraft.
You have to understand that any military equipment you see on you tube is already obsolete. Can you imagine what we have now?
My fav. Even other fighter pilots have special respect for those who fly the A-10. We just got some here in Utah at Hill Air Force Base.
I love the shark mouth motif on the nose of the A 10. Lets you know that for good or ill some fearsome, murderous bad ass is headed your way
The 30mm round is 3 inches in diameter and 11 inches long. The projectile is 30mm by 4 inches long and weighs over 3 pounds. The gun fires 3,900 rounds per minute and can penetrate the armour up to 7 inches thick.
@tinkerscorner54

The depleted uranium just burns its way through the armor and, it's not the round that kills the tank crew, but the molten metal flying around inside of the tank. We had a video that we showed our students at the tech school, viewed from inside of a practice target tank and it was enough for me to know that I never, ever, wanted to be on a tank crew.
The airforce tried to retire the A-10 because they think it's a monstrosity but all other branches of the armed forces love it and are keeping it. Also, it's actually cheaper to maintain then any other fighter. There is a super A-10 now.
Should definitely ignore the haters for the most part. Constructive criticism is one thing, but if they're just slinging hate at you than just report them and ignore them. Your videos are awesome, super chill, and feel very wholesome
when firing, the GAU-8A produces almost as much backwards force as one of the two engines. also, in early development, the gun produced so much smoke/gases when fired that the engines would risk stalling. after some tweaking of the airframe, engine placement, and the propellant used in the ammunition, we have the current A-10 Thunderbolt.
No sound is greater than an A10's gun firing when ground forces are engaged in combat.
Miles (air) from California's West Coast to New York's East coast is 2,434.96 miles. The A-10 was built and designed as an aircraft that could take on Russia if it invaded Western Europe back when it was still the USSR and East Germany was right on the border. The 10 mm cannon was the main part of the build i.e. the frame of the AC was built around it as it is nearly as long as the plane itself. (main mission was to take out Russian tanks and provide ground support for the infantry)
the plane you asked about that was flying next to the warthog was the F-22 Raptor its the new 5th Gen fighter jet for the US also the F-35 is the other 5th Gen fighter the US has
I've heard that the favorite sound for any pinned-down American troops is the burping/F@rting sound of the Warthog's main gun.
I've also heard it said that some consider the slow low flying A-10 homely, ergo the nickname "warthog", an unlovely animal but a tough one. The A-10 does what it is supposed to better than any fast sleek jet. It is no wonder why it is loved by many in the military.
If they’re worried about pilot lives, these warhogs COULD be made into remote controlled killer robot planes. Just send them!
The A10 got its nickname, "Warthog", because of it's not so pretty exterior and soldiers and airmen called it that due to the guttural belch made by its 30mm rotary cannon sticking out its mouth. Plus, if you think about it, warthog are tough little bastards. They are speedy and nimble and can outrun just about anything with their zigs and zags. They will fight anything that attacks them. I saw a video of a warthog fighting off a lion. They are totally badass. LOL

I don't know this to be a fact but I think the plane gets its name because it was designed to be just above the battlefield. Compared to other planes, the A10 is "down in the mud".

I love the A-10 and I'm glad they didn't take them out of commission! They were going to retire them but there was a request to allow it to go up against the F-22 to see how they did, BUT, in order to go up against the F-22 they were allowed to upgrad the Warthog first. With the state of the art upgrades it got, it made it impossible to take off the line. That's why today it has so many nifty little attatcents 🤗🤗 there are videos about that upgrade

The A-10 can't fire for too long or the plane will fall out of the sky. It generates so much force it pushes the plane backwards.
The Warthog has Gone through several Upgrades. The look of the Control Panel on the New Updated Worthog it's Very Different than the One in the Video that You Viewed. This was and Is a Lethal Weapon!! Defending the Troops on the Ground. Even though this is a Air Force Mission. The Marines (Grunt) on the Ground call the Airforce Pilots of the A10, The Grunt in the Air!! This is Quite a Compliment from Marine to Airforce Pilot. These Warriors in the Air and On the Ground, Respect each Other and the Warthog Pilot and the A10 Has the Boots on the Grounds Back.
This thing is fear incarnate and it's beautiful
Angry dragon spitting fire and that sound of the Gau 30 mm firing? No better sound to hear when you are on the ground.
General electric designed the GAU-8 Avenger auto cannon and the air force said " make it fly" and Fairchild republic designed the A-10 the twin turbo fan engines sit high on the airframe to limit debris being sucked into the engines, this aircraft can be forward deployed and can take off and land in dirt fields Also former Dallas cowboy and super bowl champ Chad Hennings flew the A-10 on combat missions in Bosnia and I don't know how a 6'-6"" defensive end fit in the cockpit
When the narrator gave you the range of the A-10 you said you didn't how long that is. Think, approximately, northern Johannesburg to southern Kinshasa.
The pilots look "so chill," as you say, because they first of all have hundreds, if not thousands of hours in the cockpit, so it's their office. And they look like you going to the shops for three reasons, Training, Training and Training. They are where they have trained for years to be, doing exactly what they love doing.
Makes you glad to be a American.
That's why health care so expensive 😂
The A-10 might seem very analog (it is in some regards) but you have to remember that its layered redundancy relies on that 'hard to kill' old tech of pressure gauges and simple displays. The real power lies in the A-10C and later upgrades that created a very streamline interface with the weapons and tracking systems. With the helmet tracking system you can look out the side at a target on the ground, use a few finger and thumb commands on the controls to designate it, move the target pod to it, lase it, and then kill it with a guided munition, in less than twenty seconds (minus fall time for bomb). Simple isn't necessarily ineffective, it's just not fancy. I'd rather have the fancy stuff on the back end and simple and effective controls in hand.
NY to LA is about 3K miles. That's short for most planes but way longer than any helicopter can fly. The "correct" comparison to make to the Warthog isn't other planes, it's combat helicopters. The helicopters have some advantages, like being able to land and take off in tight spaces, but when ground troops are pinned down by enemy forces, it's the Warthog they want to see coming over the horizon.
The sound of freedom.
Why is the A-10 called the "Warthog?" I left the Army in 1996, but I was around the A-10 since it was first fielded. Also have a very close friend who was a O-2 FAC in Vietnam and then after the war he became an A-10 driver. The name, "Warthog" is an affectionate name to the airmen and to the soldiers. It is ugly, but in a very functional and beautiful way. If you look carefully, on either side of the nose there are two bumps or sensors that look like "warts." So, the front of the fuselage appears to be the head of a wild boar or "warthog." Often, we simply referred to the A-10 as "The Hog." Grunts--Army infantrymen--absolutely love that airplane and the pilots! The pilots, who are incredibly committed to helping the guys on the ground, are sometimes referred to as "grunts in the sky." It's a team!
I was paddling my canoe on a river in the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. A Warthog came down the river, flying at treetop level. We looked at each other and I waved to the pilot, and he waved back. The warthog was developed to counter the large number of Russian Tanks, if they were to attack Europe. When you asked what is flying beside them. I think it could either be a F-22 or F-35. They look very similar.
