To those wondering what it means, I can help. I'm a French major!: The too pallid moon rests as a diadem on your red hair/ The too red moon splashes your tattered skirt with it's glory/ The too pale moon caresses the whites of your indifferent eyes/ Princess of the street be most welcome in my broken heart Chorus:... My sweet Mandigotte* I can feel your hand as it searches for mine/I can feel your breasts and your thin waist, I forget my sorrow/ I feel on your lips the fever of an underfed child/ In your caress I could fall into an annihilating trance *Mandigotte is a nice term for beggar. I'm in love with this song and have been since I was in HS. Learning to speak French has only made me love it that much more.

Aria Briar "La Butte" means a sort of hill, and when capitalized it means the Montmartre hill, a neighborhood in Paris. The title of the song is "the lament of La Butte", so the lament of Montmartre. It's... a very very sad song. The last verse just says the poet loses his love as the moon wanes, and in the introductory verse (not sung here) it's said he "briefly loved her one night, never to see her again, but composed this song in hope that she will hear it on a street corner"... One, of course, assumes that the little beggar girl has in fact resorted to prostitution, alas.

Aria Briar Also, the chorus means "the stairs of the Montmartre hill are harsh to the poor, the wings of the windmills protect lovers..." This means the Moulin Rouge, but more than that, there were actual windmills on that hill still in the early XXth century. There aren't anymore, though.

Rufus does a great job on this track. The version by Cora Vaucaire is quite nice as well. Someone on here indicated that she sang this song as well. Glad to know both.

Linda música!
@yourfatmuma1990 Rufus is American. Born in NY state. His father is American folk singer Loudon Wainwright III and his mother was Kate McGarrigle, a Canadian folk singer. Rufus is American, but may hold dual citizenship with Canada. Not sure about that.
tres bon Bravo!
It is indeed Rufus Wainwright singing this beautiful song.
me encanta...
this is my fav song
Love from Indonesian
Yeaah ;) énorme =)
I really like this song. I'm French so I don't think such things as "French is a beautiful language", but the lyrics and the melody are so beautiful, it makes me feel sad and happy at the same time (yeah, it's hard to describe). This was the song of the first dance of my sister's wedding. PS: It's not "Complainte du la butte" but "Complainte de la butte".

For me and Meg.........our Paris, our Montmartre ♥
Le français, la plus belle langue au monde 😊
@MathiasMeziane How sad ! His mother, Kate McGarrigle of The McGarrigle Sisters, had every reason to be proud of her son. At the same time he could be proud of his mother, who with her sister Anna made beautiful music in both French and English. I feel terrible about Kate dying.
Another film set in France and is nice to hear it in French.
