Soundskins Sound Deadening Install and Review in WRX Doors | DETAILED GUIDE |

I install soundskins to sound deaden all 4 doors of my 2017 WRX and I couldn’t be happier. In this video I show you my complete install and share everything I learned along the way. I also include a sound comparison. Even if you don’t have a WRX the install is basically the same in any car. The net result if you do this will be reduced road noise, increased mid-bass, and a much more luxurious-feeling and sounding interior. This is one of those things that you will definitely tell the difference after the install.
Soundskins Pro (single roll): amzn.to/2UZmgia one roll is good enough for 2 doors. I used 2 rolls for all 4 doors and had a bit left over.
Soundskins Pro (3-pack): amzn.to/2IlCdcl This is a good idea to get if you also plan on doing the trunk or the inner/outer skin of the door.
Door Panel Tools: amzn.to/2Il3DPN If you need door clip remover might as well get this kit. It’s cheap and well worth it.

Dude....I applaud your attention to detail. I did my doors 3 yrs ago and it literally made a night and day difference but i had to purchase all the different "materials" separately and do it "off the cuff". You pointed out the drain holes in the bottom.....EXTREMELY IMPORTANT not to let any install trash fall down there. If you have a compressor, blow air from the bottom of hole to "push" any debris up and hopefully out. Awesome video. I subscribed!

Great detail instruction. Did this years ago to my Forester, then my Windows motor broke, down goes all the deadener. Going to do it properly this time drilling holes, ravnut and screw in panels to cover those holes but still make them removable. I think majority of the deadeners should be focusing on cover the outside door that is just thin sheet where the speaker backwave will hit, the inner door skin if the speaker is properly isolated with good rings then only sound barrier is needed and I prefer to do that to the door card instead. The interior door panel has a lot of grooves and curves so they are structurally more deaden.

Keywords when searching on eBay: Siless Black 50 mil 52 sqft Sound Deadening mat - about $75, followed by 197mil 5mm 32.6sqft Car Sound Proofing Insulation Deadener Mat - about $37. Cover the larger areas and apply Siles first then the 5mm black foam, if the panels lets you. Cover any large holes with thick plastic. It works and it is fire resistant, I did apply some heat with a torch to some test strips and held very well.

Great video! Very helpful. Wouldn't the factory original moister barrier that was removed could be used as a perfect template? Also as I'm 69, when I was young we used to love loud after-market exhuast systems on big block V-8 engines. I find now that the loud exhaust systems on todays 4 cylinder rice burners are comical and obnoxious. But it's ok 👍 times change. But i find it odd, that after one installs that noisy exhaust, they now want to suppress that noise???? It's like, if the driver doesn't like it what makes one think anybody else wants to hear it. Loud exhaust systems belong on the track, not on my street while we're trying to enjoy a quiet weekend😊. But again great video. Will definitely help my install when my new rice burner shows up and I'm immediately going to replace the stock stereo system. Amps, sub, speakers etc. (Still a kid sometimes, love my good ole rock n roll, blues and more)

Every car is different. good vid. Exemplifies basics of how to make a template, etc. However, some cars, like Toyota for example, have very tight tolerances inside the door, with the door panel literally leaving about a 1/6" or less clearance. If you just make your own template like that, there is a good change that the door panel will not fit back on, if the deadening is too big and/or if the deadening is too thick. ---Water: The vehicle is not designed to "Supposed to" let water into the door. Water gets in, that's it.... It's a byproduct of how doors are made and having movable glass in them. ----Fitment test: Don't just put the cut piece up on the door and check the holes and cut. You need to put it on the door, temp. attach it, and then make sure the door panel fits back on. Just a suggestion to prevent putting it all on and finding out that the door panel will not fit.

  • @1998gst4611
    @1998gst46114 жыл бұрын

Boost & Shutter, i got question how were you able to clean the tar like buytl beads off the steel door panel that hold the clear plastic water deflector sheet installed from the factory? When i did my door panel replacing the factory dust sheet i had hard time cleaning the sticky butyl glue because it becomes a tar like material especially when its hot out which is a pain in the ass to clean off, i tried laquer thinner and that some what worked but took forever to clean off. Stuff is nasty too, it gets all over your hands, clothes or whatever it comes in contact to so when you say you use some type of rubbing achahol product to clean the surface off i don't see how that will work as efficiently taking tar like rubber glue off. You see i used laquer thinner which is strong enough to take paint off but still gave me hard time cleaning the glue off. So when i cleaned everything off the door panel i wasn't going back to putting that tar like glue and found out from a local body shop to use 3M tape for holding the sheet in place which works great. I like to do the Sound Skins on my door panels but one issue might be a problem with it is what if you had to replace a broken door handle or if you had to replace a malfunctioning power window motor regulator then you would have to rip out that expensive Sound Skin material laid on the panel to get into the door? From what it looks like, That Sound Skin material has that buytl glue behind it just like dynamat and if you try to to remove it its like that factory buytl glue they use for the rain deflector sheet which would be a big mess.

I bought the pre-cut Soundskins for my 2019 WRX after watching this video. I returned it as soon as I got the door panel off. For one thing, the driver power window harness requires much more disassembly than shown here. Also, you have one shot to get the Soundskins placed- it will not attach and come back off in any re-usable way if you f it up. I learned this by using a small patch to wrap my tweeter crossover. This full Soundskin treatment is probably great- but was not worth it for me. Ultimately, I used foam baffles as well as 12" x 12" squares of Dynamat behind the speakers and here and there on the inside of the door cavity and the plastic panel itself. With a mid-level JL component system in front and coaxial's in the rear, it sounds great and probably saved me 12 hours of work over the full installation. *I'm 99% sure that the guy in this video is pictured in the actual Soundskin installation manual- something I would've liked to know before plunking down $350.*

Did the 4 doors, there was still too much noise so I did the trunk/rear next. I'm pretty much content now, might think about doing the floor one day but I'm not sure it would be worth it, the floor is already covered by carpet that I have topped with a Husky floor liner and I'm not unhappy with the sound level as is. On the drivers side door panel I removed the piece that gets the big plug from the panel and then I was able to get full access to the release lever on the plug which is otherwise a pain to get to, made that part easy. Getting the job done was a pain in the ass and I would not have tackled it without the great vids, but it was well worth it.

I'm getting ready to do this exact treatment on my '16 wrx. Would you say one roll is enough to cover 2 doors? I'm hoping to knock my front doors out with one roll.

@@akqjtn correct, I have a different material for the outer skin, then using the exact soundskins material you used in this video. I have aftermarket speakers and an amp. The midbass is pretty much non-existent. I'm hoping by sealing up the door that it'll fix this problem.

Sound deadening the doors - did it eat into speaker's sound as well? This is the only thing I'm concerned about

It sounds better after you sound deaden the doors. The music sounds better and if you also have subs it is so much cleaner and punchier. I sound deadened all 4 doors and it made quite a difference.

Wouldn't it be better to apply the insulation on the outer skin? All you've done is create a speaker box that will amplify not only the speakers but road noise as well. The inner door structure is already ridged with all the dimples and press forming. The outer skin is a relatively flat piece of sheet metal with little to no support. It vibrates much more than the inner structure. And every time you may need to do anything inside the door like service the window regulator, door handles, glass or locking system not to mention the wiring, you have to pull all that crap off and redo it.

I'd say that a fair observation, although the mat he is using has 3 layers, one dampens vibrations, 2nd blocks and 3rd absorbs noise. For the real luxury feel you want to add a badass sound barrier, most likely MLV Like Second Skin.

@@akqjtn that defeats the effort to seal the panel. What should be done is an abs plastic cover wrapped in sound deadening and screwed on 1/2" or even 1/4" abs with four small screws.

@@akqjtn the cut outs were not made only for replacment of the motor. What happens if your door unfortunately gets damaged. The vehicle is taken to a panelshop and the person working on the vehicle rips off the deadening, I've seen this happen many times so we started using different ways in the shop for our customers. Remember not all cars are the same unless your video on deadening is aimed only toward the type of vehicle you have.
