Soundgarden, believe it or not, is probably underrated to this day. I can't explain it. They groove in odd time sigs. What more do you want? Excellent melodies? Sick drumming? Unique guitar riffs? Galloping basslines? Orgasmic vocals? Please. I sometimes wonder if all the "grunge" era songs would come off better if they weren't so heavy and drop-tuned. In other words, how would The Beatles have recorded the Seattle sound? Guess we'll never know.

Damn right, there are no rules. The Beatles, Hendrix and Eddie all broke the rules, because they didn’t bother to learn them. Beethoven and Chopin knew them, but didn’t care. But, there’s also Bach and Mozart. Formal as could be, but their music is alive and well.

I’m enjoying your reviews on Soundgrden. One thing I’ve noticed that its mix of song composition, metal riffs, uncomfortable distortion and experimentation, and undeniably top-notch musicians can be wicked challenging. It’s ok not to enjoy every vegetable or song in the garden, I certainly don’t. It’s just great to browse.

Matt Cameron is a beast on that song and his love for 70's jazz fusion -- in particular Steve Gadd's work -- is all over Badmotorfinger but this song in particular. That ride in the half tile section the subtle switching of feel and odd feeling drum fills that add expression and character are all flawless on that song.
