I recently undertook a project on Upwork where I was tasked with creating immersive sound design for a character within a AAA game. The client provided me with the necessary materials, including a Google Sheet and an APK file for testing the game. After thoroughly playing the game and familiarizing myself with its dynamics, I crafted a detailed demo reel showcasing my process and the evolution of the character's sounds.
To establish a cohesive theme, I began by creating a distinct sound that would serve as an auditory cue for players when in proximity to the enemy character. This thematic sound aimed to enhance the overall gaming experience. Subsequently, I delved into designing the character's attack sounds, ensuring they conveyed the appropriate intensity and impact. I also worked on the character's responses to being hurt by the protagonist, incorporating nuanced mumbling sounds to enhance realism. Additionally, I meticulously developed the character's body sounds and crafted a unique death sound that added depth to the overall gaming atmosphere.
For the creation of these sounds, I employed Nuendo Voice and drew from my extensive audio library. The process involved a combination of recording and editing, incorporating Foley sounds to achieve the desired effects. I engaged in various unconventional recording techniques, such as banging my guitar on a bed, dropping glass into a water tub, and even experimenting with the sounds produced by pushing balloons into water to capture unique cracking sounds.
In terms of equipment, I utilized the Tascam Portacapture X8 with a field recording setup featuring XY microphones to ensure high-quality audio capture.
The entire project, belonging to the realm of AAA games, demanded a dedicated month of work. Despite the challenges, I thoroughly enjoyed the creative journey, and I believe the resulting demo reel reflects the meticulous attention to detail and passion that went into crafting the character's sounds.
