Hey Jack, I have a question and hoping you can help, I set up my synth lead exactly as this and it sounded great - however for some reason it keeps closing the filter slowly like over every 30sec or so. So it sounds open and lots of drive and then closes slowly over 30secs to be super small and quiet, then re-opens and I can't figure out how to stop it! Any tips if this has ever happened to you? I want it to stay open as thats when it sounds the best - like the sound you have at the end of this video. Any help would be appreciated, loved the vid! :)

Nice lesson. But I wouldn't have used that keyboard that has clear limits for a synth patch. Every cheap mono synth (hardware or software) would have been much more interesting. Two oscillators, LFOs, modulations... You name it. If you make a synth lesson, use a synth. Anyway, you are great!

You are probably correct. But Jack is talking about using this in a band setting, such as a function band. The pureness of the sound design is less of an issue when compared to having a (single) instrument that can quickly switch between all the required sounds of a covers band.

@@geoffwebber8272 I play in cover bands. I am using a full software solution. Workstation are a thing of the past for me. Sound quality and full automation are much better with VSTs and a good host like GigPerformer

@@furiobisotti8150 Is gigperformer a good replacement for mainstage? I like the featureset and workflow of mainstage for the most part, but it is so buggy and unreliable that it’s unusable for me. I need stuff like seamless switching from one patch to another without the midi cutting off until I release the keys/sustain, midi mappings that can change on a patch by patch basis, easy range adjustment for each layer, and arming/disarming of layers so I can toggle layers on and off without abruptly cutting off the audio and wasting CPU on unused layers. Unfortunaly mainstage doesn’t have that last one, unless perhaps I found some midi passthrough plugin that did that

Can anyone give some insight on what to tweak to get a lead similar to what's playing here at the end? kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIOFs5p9gpvAl84.html It's pretty similar but has a smoother/less funky tone

You can start by making the lead on this video, and detune it a little bit, no more than 3 bars to the left. Now for the dynamics, you need to raise the sustain to 4 bars (not sure if the stage has sustain control), raise the release to 12' on both envelope and amp, raise the attack of the amp to around 3 bars. It also has a phaser/chorus effect, that you can make with LFO (read the manual for that one). For all these parameters, you have to listen for yourself because synths behave very differently. On the NL 2X, you have to raise the frequency to 2' and decrease the env amount to 10' if you want to still use velocity control. If not, just do the same of the video. You should get something very close to that on the other video.

Yay mono! Yay leads. But can you strap it on like a keytar? If you're going to play a lead ya better keytar!
