Are you thinking about getting a sound card for your gaming PC in 2023?
Should you just use onboard audio?
Is a sound card worth it?
Should you use HDMI out of your video card?
What about if you're just using headphones?
I've used all these methods.

omg best video online abt this my goblin brain finally understood what DAC is, that an amplifier is it's own thing it's all just very digestable the way you do it. starting with saying "there's 3 ways, actually six ways" then going thru them, walking to the DAC even for repetition helped me immensly. it all got really grounded - one video (sat thru the whole video start to finish) and i've no confusion anymore. tyvm!~ now i'll understand some more when i journey on to grasp what DACs vs DAWs & Audio Interfaces vs Mixers mean

It has been discovered that if you slightly pull out the sound blaster card from the PCIE slot then pretty much all background noise will vanish. I for example inserted a 1mm thick nylon M3 washer between the sound card's mounting bracket and the computer case, This eliminated all background noise.

On my two PCs onboard Realtek HD Audio is causing lag and hit detection issues in games. When I disable it in BIOS, the games work perfectly. The difference is huge. This is why I started to use use my Radeon gfx cards as sound cards. However that brought new issues. Quite often the games disable the whole audio. For example, if I have music playing in the background and then I open a game, all sounds cut off, also the game sounds. Then suddenly the audio is working again but after reboot audio will be most likely cut off. So far I haven't found any solution to fix this issue, and nobody on MSI, AMD etc forums don't help.

Optical and HDMI will not give you the same quality. You should choose HDMI, then, if your av receiver supports your monitor Hz and HDR, you can simply connect receiver to monitor. If it's not, keep the hdmi to receiver and DP to monitor setup, and in the nvidia settings move the second screen on top right corner, so you wont accidently move mouse over there. Optical actually suitable ony for 2.1 or less setup, that is barely anyone with av receiver using =D

I use USB to DAC to AMP to Headset. It's totally worth getting even a cheap DAC & Amp if you have 3.5mm headphones. You can get cheap things like an Astro MixAmp for about £140/$150ish which will make your headphones sound orders of magnitude better. EDIT: To add, it's not just plug & play and there is better audio. This gives you the ability to use some decent equaliser software to make things better. I use EqualiserAPO along with Peace. With that, I'm able to really make my headphones enjoyable to listen through compared to the stock experience.

Another question is if you or in my case use a usb amp with a headset connected to it will my pc mobo dac convert the signal from digital to analog and send it to my usb amp? Is it possible to use AMP on a sound card? Like the astro mixamp Like how would I be able to connect my astro mixamp it i purchased this was it

Idk if others have said it, or if you figured it out on your own so please ignore me if you have. For your analogue outputs on your sound card you might need something additional in the line between the PC and the DAC. I've been looking into how to use my mixer properly(splitting signals up and the such to control which channels have which sound) and from one video I've learned I need to get a "Hum Destroyer". It's an input/output box that literally does what it says. For my setup, I plan on having signals going to and from my mixer to and from my PC. The video I watched on it said that once you introduce PC audio, you will get a hum or hiss or something. I think its similar to what you're talking about here. My setup is gonna be a lot of cables and a bunch of those hum destroyers, but it should come out being a nice analogue control over which sounds are recorded and which are not. There's a video on here that talks about the Pyle hum destroyer. The guy goes over how he's spent 14 years trying to fix a problem that thing fixed, and he demonstrates it in front of a huuuuuuuge studio mixer. I'm thinking the sound issue you're talking about, based off of his description, is the same he had. If I'm correct, then that *should* fix it, but if not then my apologies. I'm in the market on getting some internal sound cards, so I'm looking around for videos of them. It's crazy how dead the market seems. Everything is USB now, and I'm trying to avoid using USB but also not break the bank on sound cards xD Anyways, have a nice day! o/

One thing to consider. Probably not too relevant in your case as it looks like you are mostly going to headphones only. But for people like myself a high end GPU with HDMI out to a proper stereo system will have the ability to send out higher quality audio such as uncompressed DTS-HD or Dolby TruHD which the optical connection will not be able to do. It will also have the ability to send out uncompressed 5.1 PCM 96kHz and up to 192kHz with higher end sound system and speakers it will make for a better audio experience for both music and movies. Again not a big deal if you are just going to headphones. But much better quality to a higher end sound system and speakers.

The biggest advantage I have of using HDMI from my video card to home theatre receiver, is the control I get through windows sound settings. Bass cross-over, room correction, loudness equalization, and phantom channel blending. With optical, the receiver has to handle all the processing and it's only getting a 2 channel signal. HDMI can send the full multi-channel signal to your receiver from sources on your pc that are sending it.

I'm not sure, but the hissing you noticed with the sound card might be caused by insufficient EMI shielding. It look like you have the Sound Blaster Z SE, which has a round gap in the EMI shielding. I haven't noticed a hissing problem with my Sound Blaster AE-5 Plus, which I think is due to it having a more complete EMI shield.

The reason digital out is better is because You are introducing less changes in the chain of the sound once it is analog. Even if you were to isolate the hissing you would still get worse audio quality. The reason why your headphones sound better from the sound card is because the sound card compensates in the bass region and mid region as defualt. All but professional sound cards will do this (especially gaming sound cards) to make the sound more full. I would presume that if You volume matched the the marantz to the sound card volume you are using it would be too loud for you in the high region (those 598's are rather rolled off at the top end and low end but they will ramp up the highs faster than the lows). That being said, I dont know that much about the Marantz amp in the headphone area. Be aware that GPU audio "can" have issues with the driver causing BSOD sometimes. I personally never install the driver audio for the GPU, just the basic driver and physx. Good explanation btw.

If the only purpose is for gaming or music, and not a HTPC, folks can forgo the marantz receiver for something like a small desktop headphone amp or DAC/amp/speaker combo. Sure would eliminate the noise by unloading the audio work externally from the PC. I've used receivers solely as headphone amps before, but it sure is overkill. Good video over all to scratch the surface. Like others said, modern motherboards aren't really in need of a soundcard.

You missed a way to transmit sound from PC to your receiver, and it happens to be that you're missing the best that the Soundblaster card can offer. Use the digital output from the dedicated sound card, in the driver in the advanced features tab check the mark to ''Play stereo mix to digital output'' so in this way you'll also benefit from all the features that the DSP has, like EQ and Sbx Pro Studio. The dedicated card will do all the work while the amp will only give more power to a finely tuned sound. Creative cards are special for their DSP and you are missing out on it.

Some things to try that worked for me: I turned off ARC and that is the only way I could get Atmos or other optimized audio formats to be completely processed within the receiver. Also installing other high definition audio drivers for my audio channel (the one that foez away when you try to disable the monitor) seemed to enhance the resolution of the audio to the perfect level (it gives that crisp 1:1 silence in music that you expect from good digital signal) YMMV though as I'm on AMD and its very inconsistent still. From what I understand ARC is always going to be compressed so if you have eARC its definitely not apples to apples

Ground loops are fun stuff. The very basics of it is you have AC voltage powered devices. Internally inside each device, it has it's own ground reference level. When you connect more than one device, you can tie all the devices to a common ground. To see the ground difference issues, take a multimeter and set it to DCvolts. Connect black lead to the ground terminal in your outlet and use the red lead to see if the devices "ground bus" or chassis has a dead zero volts or if there are some mV (100mV = .1VDC which I would consider a bad ground). To get ground isolation, there are a few methods. My favorite for simple audio where you just want to get the nasty hum out of it, use the little transformers from an old PC modem or an old PBX if your workplace is going to upgrade their phone system. Another method would be to use optical isolation (laser, led, etc). Best luck.

The bandwidth from HDMI is better than the optical because optical is optimized for stereo. If you want to run 5.1 or 7.1 surround it's a lot easier to set that up with HDMI HDMI can send more data and thanks to that, better quality. HDMI is also commonly used to send video so that's kind of included in the HDMI standard.

I notice this when I'm running a game or watching a video or even using a 3D application. It is enough that there is some type of load on the video card that I can perceive the background noise if the volume on the card is at 100% to minimize this impact I need to lower the volume. When I'm just listening to music on the computer, without any kind of load on the gpu, the background noise is non-existent.

This topic is massive rabbit hole and this video only really begins to explain it, and even then I don't think you're getting the absolute best sound quality you could be getting. All my previous PC builds I was a die-hard Creative Labs sound card kinda guy. Analog, analogue multi-channel, finally settling on TOSlink digital optical cable from sound-card to home theatre onkyo receiver. I've been using that final set up for years until like last week. Well recently got a new rig, sans audio card, but with a digital optical out on the MB I figured it didn't matter. I'm not running HDMI passthrough on my receiver because it's older and doesn't support 4k, so the optical worked great. Until I ran into an audio discussion on Reddit that left me questioning whether I was getting the full bang for my buck by only using optical. See, it only supports 2 channels. And while it can give a PCM 24bit 48khz signal, you're limited to Dolby-TrueHD and DTS-HD processing. So that led me to hook up a second HDMI cable from the video card to the receiver just to act as an audio cable. Now I'm getting digital PCM Multichannel audio from the PC, with greater control from Windows of a Bass Cross-over, Speaker and Room calibration, Loudness Equalization, and phantom channel blending, as well as the benefits of the receiver to drive my room speakers. Overall I am happy with the changes. It's forced me to change my media player (I was still using MPC-HC) to VLC cause of some audio processing issues, but it's a small change and price to pay for full-channel audio. I have still yet to work out the display mirroring issues as well, but I do plan to upgrade my receiver at some point, so if I can get one with 4k passthrough I will just get that and eliminate the second HDMI cable.

I only use two channel audio and feed an outboard DAC (Schitt Modi 3) , which feeds a Marantz amplifier (PM-KI Pearl). Try a decent quality cable from the motherboard to your processor. Shortest path is best. And cables can make a difference, even with ones and zeros. Shielding is important, jitter is important.

yeah your setup is all wrong for HDMI HD audio output from the GPU. Your GPU is looking for another monitor because you probably didn't activate the GPU audio output via HDMI. I use my old GTX 1070 for video and audio output to my Home theater and get true Dolby surround and DTX along with HD audio. It's pretty easy to set up but the video card needs to know what Data is going where using the Nvidia control panel under setup digital audio. In addition I'm very surprised you aren't getting hardware conflicts having them both active by, using the sound card and GPU audio, usually sounds cards especially creative don't play well with others

You haven't gone crazy about the HDMI sound limitation in Windows 10, and now 11. I've tried EVERYTHING to get the receiver to not show up as a display and still be able to use the surround sound from my Yamaha A/V receiver as it's own audio only connection. The only way I've found is byy using the receiver as a video pass through to your display. The limitation this creates is that all but very current A/V receivers will allow higher resolution video at high refresh rates to pass through at the intended specification. As an example, my Yamaha RX-V479 5.1 receiver will allow 4k @ 60Hz, but only at a limited 4:2:0 compression rate, so I lose some color quality and accuracy. If I want 4k at anything over 60Hz, I'm just out of luck. For movies and streaming, this is fine, since most framerates for that type of media is typically only 24 FPS. For gaming, it's a whole differnt ballgame, unfortunately. One way around this is to just have a garbage monitor connected to the HDMI out of the receiver and have a direct HDMI connection to your primary display. That way when the receiver shows up as a display in Windows, your mouse pointer, etc. still has a place to go it you travel past the border of your primary montior, instead of disapperaing into no man's land. Another workaround is getting a more current receiver that will pass through at lesat 4k @ 120Hz, or even 8k @ 60Hz. The newer Yamaha RX-V4A and Denon AVR-S660H allow this with a firmware update if it doesn't already have it installed out of the box. I just don't have an extra $400 to $500 USD that I can just throw around right now. I just upgraded to Zen 4 and the mobo, CPU, and memory was my splurge for the next few months.

The TV is not doing much to the sound, it's set to simply pass it over. I had to do that because my new motherboard comes without an external S\PDIF out, and I can't be bothered to buy needed extensions for internals to externals. Sounds great! Not as great as my system in the living room, but certainly better than "computer" speakers...

That's a great video!! Thanks.. the only advantage that I've seen from using HDMI 2.0 for audio, was that it will handle 24bit 192khz.. and 5.1. Down the rabbit hole I went.. HDMI 2.0 sucks for gaming from the PC. The optical cable handles up to 24bit 96khz. , which is totally fine. I run a Marantz nr1510 which I believe is similar to yours. Tried the same way as you regarding the display port to video, HDMI to a receiver.. It just seemed like it was more complex than it had to be. Now I'm playing with Focal headphones 🎧 from the motherboard VS. The GPU through Display 1.4 through the monitor headphone jack.. if your interested in the results, hit me up. 😃 thanks again.

If i'm not wrong the Human can use max. 20Bit of audio Information so there will be no "real" difference only placebo With optical you will have Less interference so this is a plus point. Would be interested in your results! Where you level matched?

@@plompudu2529 While you are right for directly hearing the output on a headphone, this does not holds true when you use a DAC to manipulate the sound for a surround system. When you have to make it sound different (due to room setup, equalizing, balancing, etc) the more info you get in, the better response you can get out of it. Of course, it has diminishing returns, double the bitrate doesn't mean the sound is better by 2x.

You could see if it helps to move the soundcard to one slot lower, but in your case the space between them isn't great. I had same issues because of that, I just moved the soundcard to the bottom of MB and all sounds fine now. Onther possiblity would be on power side grounding problems. The card should not get exterior interferances.. cheers

Motherboards since perhaps 5 years ago have vastly improved DAC functions and shielding to prevent interference over older boards (say from 2010) On board audio from brands like ASUS or EVGA will rival dedicated sound cards (the analog output for headphones in particular.) If you have a motherboard with upgraded onboard audio, well make use of it. Now an older PC like I am using (ASUS M4A79T-Deluxe) puts out analog audio with a lot of hiss and popping. Older boards, get soundcard. New boards, use onboard. Or, take your digital audio signal from a USB 2.0 port sent to a DAC. Since we are talking music how about to something like a USB interface (then you get a DAW digital audio workstation.) I say the USB interface should be considered. No electromagnetic interference on that signal from a USB port.

For good on-board audio, it also helped when Window standardized audio drivers and cut access to custom chips. I mean EAX and other Creative shenigans. Do not get me wrong, it worked, and worked good. But it made a lot of different, incompatible sound card versions. Once it was standardized, manufacturers could focus on quality, rather than bells and whistles, all using same API.

I think this is the best method without having to buy other gadgets. I have a new decent new audio processor/amp built in z690 motherboard & RTX 3080 Ti (HDMI 2.1) with much improved onboard audio ALC4080 & dedicated headphone amp (up to 384/32bit can handle 600 ohm headphones from the front jack as it uses HD-A to USB-A with an 'Boost 5 AMP' on a separate layer of the mboard) or can use just the rear analog for 192/24bit max. I wanted a couple new speakers, but decided on a new Soundbar/sub with all the lastest sound stuff that only comes out of HDMI 2.1. After persistence and (Purchased Dolby Access & DTS Sound Unbound applications in Windows 11 Store). While Optical Cable is digital, like HDMI (no DAC req.) It has very low bandwidth, so can only output giving basic stereo, basically. Also, don't want to use a separate DAC/AMP or Soundcard etc to minimise processing, lag and issues. So, straight to digital with a new HDMI 2.1 Ultra speed cable I found it best to not use my fancy video cards HDMI 2.1 port but to use the onboard HDMI 2.1 port on my motherboard straight to my new soundbar into the HDMI In port (not the eARC). This gives me 8 channels of uninterrupted lagless 32.0 khz-192khz sample rates with [DTS Audio, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos (dolby digital plus), DTS:X (E1), Dolby Atmos (Dolby MAT 2.0) & (Dolby MAT 2.1). Sure, if I use the HDMI port from the Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti HDMI Port to the 'Samsung Q700B 3.1.2 Channel True Dolby Atmos Home Theatre, 2022 model) it does the same thing, but has a few less encoded formats than the audio my motherboard has. Also, it can take away some of the GPU performance due to extended display requirement. However, I'd recommend if you don't have decent onboard audio to pump it out through your graphics card. Tip: To help with any pesky issues with extended display enabled, UNTICK 'Ease Cursor Movement between displays'. Then your mouse doesn't go off the primary monitor. Therefore, you don't even notice. So, basically because Nvidia still haven't made a driver that allows you to choose two of the outputs coming out of the video card (HDMI or DisplayPort) to only output Audio or Display this seems to be the best option I have found. As optical cable and using analog doesn't provide the new sound tech, due to bandwidth (Optical Cable) and DAC (analog cable) requirements. HDMI 2.1 can carry 48gbps which is much more than 18gbps of HDMI 2.0b. DisplayPort 1.4a is around the 25-32gbps. While DP 2.1 is out an can send over 80gbps it still has yet to be implemented due to the mafia run VESA/HDMI land. - Also, use an Ultra Speed HDMI cable.
