The first thing I thought when you mentioned you like the vampire / goth esthetics and sound was ‘oh she needs to check out Type O’Negative!’. Regarding pitch, Dani Filth actually did have some troubles with his voice a while back (like, 10+ years back, but still, after Nymphetamine, so around or after the time this song was released). But he got a dedicated vocal coach and worked on his technique and nowadays his voice, especially live, isn't exactly what it was on their first albums from around the turn of the millenium, but it's much more sustainable, and still really awesome and unique!

Thanks for this tidbit! I didn't know that about him. Correlates with at least two (prolly more) vocalists I respect tremendously, that made that choice for live performance, as an (intelligent) way of preserving their beautiful voices: Maynard of Tool and Mikael of Opeth. There is also, especially in the case of Mikael, a move away from the energies they worked through in cathartic ways, and felt the desire to move on to more melodic (and sometimes less aggressive, but never boring) works.

As a general rule, there is no such thing as Symphonic Black Metal. If you like Dimmu Borgir, and their ilk, that's your prerogative, but they are not Black Metal. Just because a generic symphonic band has tremolo picking, harsh vocals, and bad corpse paint, doesn't make them Black Metal.

Cradle Of Filth just keep releasing masterpiece after masterpiece. I found this album in a charity shop and bought it for the hell of it. Didn't give it much thought. It was this song that got my interest and made me spend more time with the whole album. It's a gateway song. Not even close to their best work, but a good siren song to lure the unsuspecting in. I now own everything they have released. In my top ten favourite bands. I listen to so much music that I started needing more complex and challenging music to keep me interested. They provide exactly that. My favourite album Is 'Dusk And Her Embrace'. The two considered their best by consensus are 'Midian' and 'Cruelty and the Beast'. Cruelty has the songs 'Bathory Aria' and 'Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids' which are epic songs with amazing lyrics.

My first experience with Cradle Of Filth came via a Goth/metal girl I used to hang out with ‘round here. We met before I moved back to the area, then continued once I found a place. One day she brought me some burned CDs, as they were still in use then. Among them was a Cradle Of Filth album, the name of which I never made note of. But I liked the tracks enough to go find my own copies. I came across a double album compilation and bought it. After some time I grew to like the first disc a lot. Because to me each track sounded like its own little horror movie, and I used to be big into those. I also have some background in both metal and Goth, so I suppose all of that set me up nicely to enjoy their brand of Gothic-style extreme metal. Though this tune is more like a radio-friendly version of their songwriting. That said, it’s a great and sensible intro to the band before you might sample some of their more hardcore material. Either way they have lots of strong, heavy compositions to choose from. Other groups I would recommend would be Norway’s Dimmu Borgir, black metal with actual orchestral parts, harsh vocals plus clean singing; and New York’s Type O Negative, heavy Gothic/doom metal with especially low male lead vocals. I would consider these some of the top acts in their different sub-genres.

I like that, coming from a very different musical discipline, you can appreciate the wonderful musical quality that COF belches out with poetic harmony. It actually takes a musician to appreciate a band like this. My parents are not musically inclined and broke my COF CD when I was in highschool, which just made me wanna listen to it even more. They have like 3 or so albums that tell an elaborate story about the countess Elizbet Bathory who allegedly bathed in virgin blood and embraces this as truth, although it was a bunch of misogynistic Aristocrats that made false accusations because they didn't like a woman having that much power in Bulgaria, as she came into it due to the death of her husband. You'd love the lyrics from those albums, and the transitions are astounding

heres my Cof Story. I saw a show 20 years ago called 'Living with the enemy' where they stick opposites together. Anyway some full blown metalheads mum who was like a level 7 vegan christian went on the tour bus with these guys and in the end she was like 'yeah idk about the music but Dani Filth is a very nice guy'. Its true.

This comment was CENSORED by YT(!), so another take... You want to know what genre they are? Nowadays, I would say it is goth metal, but for sure they come from a very own version of black metal. Very well-made extreme metal right from the start. The lyrics of Dani Filth are always extraordinarily well-made, unique. He called the genre "vampire metal" in the beginning, if you want to know what they come from, you might watch one of the probably most notoriously shocking music videos of the 90s in the uncensored version. (The one with the introduction of Dany Filth in the beginning, where he fantasizes about killing the pope and explains that they used nearly 100 gallons of blood for the video and have all the bells and whistles for an offending video, like ... yepp ...): Cradle of Filth: From the Cradle to Enslave kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6KWscqMd7nIgso.html I guarantee you, after watching this video, you will never see a violin the same way as before. (People who watched it will instantly know what I mean!) Honestly, this is one of the best and most disturbing metal videos of all times, and it instantly made me a fan of them. They deserve a deeper look into their early work. They were always excellent.

I’m not into the vampire movies much but the Underworld series are quite excellent. One of my favorite Spookie / Creepy movies from my youth was Prince of Darkness. Alice Cooper even played a character in it. It’s not action packed, more of a slower and building movie but it’s one of the few I enjoyed.

Awrite, I know I'm late to the party but I'm delighted to have discovered this channel and that you've discovered CoF. If you're curious about their old school sound, I'd recommend "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids" or "Bathory Aria". Though, to be honest, I'd absolutely love seeing you react to Rainer Landfermann ("Langsam, hinter's Licht"), especially if you’re up for something a bit unsettling and a bit of an assault on the senses. And I’d provide you with translations of the lyrics! That said, when you mentioned wanting to be able to do extreme metal vocals I immediately imagined you adding them to "I Never" or "Break of the Dawn" and I cannot decide if that would be hilarious or atrocious.

firstly I have an advice always react to studio versions of these bands beacause often they chop of the songs to fit tv time. If you like Vampires you should defenitly check out Type O Negative (Black No1), also the studio versiom, their lead vocalist sounds exactly how count dracula would sing. Another great song is Dracula from Iced Earth, its based on the classic novel by Bramm Stoker

I’d recommend trying out “archives of an enchanted philosophy” by “Bishop Of Hexen” it’s a concept album based on story the band made up, and lyrically each song continues the previous, overall it was masterfully written and it is also surprisingly lesser known, it’s from the late 90’s so I presume they were overshadowed by the likes of great bands like cradle of filth and dimmu borgir, anyway, If you do check ‘em out hope you enjoy

What metal has always done better than most other genres of music is it's ability to mix harsh and beautiful. Not all metal does it (grind certainly doesn't!), but when it does it it's often mind blowing. I still think the best example of it is probably Anaal Nathrakh who mix white noise and screaming with absolutely beautiful pathos. I'm pretty much begging you to listen to Obscene As Cancer by Anaal Nathrakh.
