Sorry, but Apple TV 4K (2022) Quick Media Switching is a LETDOWN

We tested the Quick Media Switching (QMS) function on the Apple TV 4K (2022) box together with an LG G3 OLED.
Quick Media Switching is an HDMI 2.1a feature that promises to eliminate AV blackouts, but only when the frame rate is changed, not when there's a switch in resolution or dynamic range formats.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable manufacturer Zeskit. If you're thinking about getting a new HDMI 2.1 cable, please support this channel by considering buying from Zeskit:

That’s why this is one of my favorite TV channels, it covers things that no other channel covers!

The resolution of the video shouldn’t have any blackout effect with QMS. The Apple TV is the one that’s doing the upscaling here, not the TV. Therefore, playing any video that’s in the same dynamic range as the default output with match dynamic range enabled that’s lower than 4K should not result in any blackouts because the output resolution is not being changed.

QMS is one of the most pointless features HDMI now has. I have never once heard of someone complain that the short 2-3 second black screen before something was playing was 'too long'. All this does is add more features to it which makes it more complex. And half these times these features are never implemented correctly by the manufactures, and this is just such a case.

Speaking for myself the "QMS-VRR" [POPUP] is far worse and much more annoying than the completely blackout pause you get switching between output resolutions. So hopefully there's a way to turn that notification off!!!

In my experience, the best way to stop experiencing blackouts is to stop drinking.

Having Dolby HDR on all menus is horrible for an OLED TV. You're looking at image retention and burn in. No big deal with the black out. Instead they should enable 8K through the HDMI 2.1 import and YT 8K.

One thing to keep in mind if you use the “purist” setting to match dynamic range of the content being played; this can be very painful if you watch a lot of videos on the KZread app - dynamic range and resolutions are all over the place for YT videos, so you might see a lot of black screens as you browse and play videos… note that it even impacts ads, which can be a different format from the video being played. 😐

I've been struggling this problem for far too long until I stumbled upon your video after an extensive internet search led me through Reddit to you. Thank you for the switch to settings on LG TV which solved my issue. I have both Liked and subscribed!

Actually. Your “not tip” about setting the ATV to Dolby Vision and turning off match dynamic range is a brilliant setting. It nearly removes all blackout for us non QMS users. It makes the entire operation more fluid and no more annoying blackouts. HDR content tone maps perfectly to DV as far as my eye can tell. SDR does much the same. Have not noticed any issues. What I have noticed is no more LG art gallery images popping up when I play content! :)
