Sorcerer Skills Guide In Depth Analysis | Diablo 4 Pre Release

Ойындар

An in depth analysis of every skill for the Sorcerer in Diablo 4. I break down each skill including their main effect, enhancement, upgrades and modifiers, and enchantment slot effect. Sorcerer is a strong class overall and has easy to understand skills, making this a fantastic class choice for new players to the game. If you've never played a Diablo game before, I recommend trying Sorcerer out first, as I find it's representative of Blizzard's overall philosophy on class design.

I'm pretty confident that Ice Shards isn't endgame viable and that even many casual builds should outperform it. Fireball burning is easily the best option for endgame which will easily outclass this and many other skills. That said, hopefully we'll get some additional Unique items, Legendary Aspects, and Paragon Boards in the future and we'll see meta shifts that can enable these skills to be more useful. That's something the Diablo 4 dev team has already hinted at coming in the future, and we'll see more details develop around how the game will expand over time in the near future.

@@echohack i think i disagree. Ice shards does 125% single target damage, it ricochets off of frozen targets, it does 25% increased damage to frozen targets or if all 5 shards hits a single enemy that enemy becomes vulnerable for 2 seconds. If you get a specific perk, having a barrier active makes ice shards ricochet 100% as well as deal 25% extra damage. Also there is a dungeon in the beginning zone that lets ice shards pierce 3 up to 8 enemies depending where you place the aspect in your gear. Now its a full aoe ability. The burning damage of fireball is insignificant compared to the damage bonuses of ice shards or vulnerability it can apply.

That's the beauty of Diablo 4, is that there aren't very many trashcan tier 🗑️ skills in the game (but there are a few, looking at you Blood Howl). The overall damage output *in comparison to other skills* for Ice Shards however is disappointing, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised and impressed with how other skills perform. Give a different build a shot during Server Slam beta and tell me how it goes!!!

Pretty good video, I agree with most of the things you said. I however disagree with some few points : 1) Frost Nova is the best source of permanent vulnerable status apply in the game, which makes it interesting in any non Frost Sorcerer Build for its defensive/offensive utility. 2) Ice-Blades is by far the most mandatory utility summoning skill for any build using an Ultimate, especially in endgame. 3) Inferno will also be amazing in endgame due to it's already low cooldown for an ultimate and having ice-blades to reduce it's cooldown which allows you to ignore mana regeneration for other stats. 4) Unstable Current is very strong for the same reason of ice-blades reducing it's cooldown. 5) Vyr's Mastery can be one of the strongest damage reduction effect with it's legendary aspect. 6) Esu's Ferocity is strong in every situation giving crit chance, crit damage and an insane amount of attack speed with it's legendary aspect. It works with Burning build very well as Paragon will make Burning benefit from crit damage and the attack speed will make stacking DoTs even faster.

I think firebolt deserves more credit in my opinion. Firstly it's great as a base for kiting enemies between your spender skills (especially while levelling). One of a few uses then you can kite while still dealing burning damage. Also flickering's mana regen really stacks up with the enhancement. If a bolt goes through 3 burning enemies, that is 6 mana gained. When used well it can really help the mana gain to lower the time between using your spenders. During the beta I was surprised at how much well flickering and the enhancement paired up. Overall it is less DPS than the more direct primaries, but defensively it is so much better as it's easier to keep your distance because you can kite while still dealing damage.

Thanks for the detailed discussion Echo! Mostly I very much agree with your assessments. There are a few things I'm unsure about though. Firstly, with Ice Blades, you seemed to point at the Invoked upgrade as the best way to summon lots of Ice Blades, and I see how that makes good sense, due to more atk speed helping to reduce the cooldown of Ice Blades itself more quickly. Having said that, in my limited experience playing with this skill in Beta, I got the impression that if I run 4 (or possibly even more) cooldown skills together with the Ice Blades enchantment, using the Summoned upgrade leads to very fast cooldown resets on all those skills, not just Ice Blades, which not only give you more utility and defensive bonuses, but allow you to summon more Ice Blades through the enchantment effect. And it seems to me that since every cooldown skill you add on your bar adds a separate source of summoning Ice Blades through the enchantment effect, each of which will help reset each of those cooldowns quicker, it seems like there is even a somewhat exponential increase to the usefulness of more cooldowns. Sorry if this was long winded, but tried to explain my thought process as best I could. Secondly, you correctly mentioned when discussing Ice Shards that skills which draw a lot of benefit from enemies being Frozen will likely not scale well into the end game, due to monsters' building CC resistance the longer they are frozen. Now would that same principle not apply to the Shatter ultimate passive? And to Shock skills and passives that trigger off of (or synergize with) enemies being stunned? Looking forward to hear your thoughts! Thanks again for your explanation, and keep up the great content! :)

I think both of these are great points and just goes to show how beautiful this game is. First for Ice Blades: It's yet to be seen which of these two actually work optimally at endgame and I have to admit that there is a bit of guesswork involved with predicting these things. My primary reason for selecting attack speed is because it scales linearly with the damage output. You're correct that the skill does reset based on ANY cooldown with the other upgrade and that's something I should have mentioned in the video as it's very worth pointing out. The main difference between Shatter and Ice Shards is that Ice Shards benefits from FROZEN DURATION (ie: enemies need to be frozen WHEN you attack them) and Shatter benefits from the FROZEN TRIGGER itself. This means that the frozen trigger will always occur optimally, especially with enemies that summon fresh enemies like Spiderlings, etc, and you don't have to be concerned about the actual CC Immunity / Unstoppable curve that enemies have. In other words, Ice Shards gets worse and worse as enemies stay Frozen for less duration, while the Shatter triggers occurs always a set number of times before Unstoppable is induced in the enemy, which makes the damage reliable and consistent. It's for that reason that the Barrier == Frozen upgrade on Ice Shards is basically a hard requirement and it leaves you without an important source of Vulnerability from the other upgrade. Thanks for pointing these out and I'll endeavor to include a few more details like this in the future!

@@echohack Thank you for taking the time to address my points, and elaborate on them in such detail. I think that says a lot about your love of the game and your commitment to your viewers! :) If I may, I would like to clarify a bit more about Shatter though, because if it works as you explained it, then I'm completely misunderstanding the tooltip description. The way I read it, I thought that when an enemy is frozen, it would sum up the damage you dealt to it from the beginning of that specific freeze to the end, then at the end (when the freeze expires) it generates an explosion dealing 25% of that damage in an AOE around it. Now if that is the case, wouldn't progressively shorter freeze durations due to building CC resistance (and eventual immunity) lead to a progressively narrower (and eventually non-existent) time window to deal the damage on which the damage of that final explosion would be based? Unless the explosion after each freeze takes into consideration not only the damage dealt during that specific freeze, but also during previous freezes on the same enemy.. but I don't think the tooltip suggests that is the case right? If I'm misunderstanding it, kindly accept my apologies. I'm not trying to make this a debate or anything, just to make sure I'm understanding it correctly, for theorycrafting purposes.. 😅 Thanks again Echo! :)

Ice blades sorc was my main character during the open beta, in my experience "summoned" is slightly superior to "invoked" because of the added utility you get from spamming all your cooldowns all the time, every mob is always frozen by a nova(and made vulnerable), teleport is always ready and during the world boss fight I had almost 100% uptime on flame shield and 100% barrier all the time.. but overall dps is higher with invoked frost blades because you can summon more of them faster and they also attack faster the more blades you have but you are still dependent on your other cooldowns and the enchantment effect to get the ball rolling when going from one pack of mobs to the next..

I probably have no idea what I am doing, but during server slam I played a freeze mage using skills you seem to think are not optimal. lol I used Frost Bold (glinting), Ice Shards (greater), Fireball as Enchantment for fireball explosion upon kill, Glass Cannon, Frost Nova (mystical), Ice Armor (mystical), Teleport and Flame Shield. Maybe I'll try a fire sorcerer when the game comes out based on your insights. Looking forward to your post server slam sorcerer video! For most of the game I'd drop Frost Nova, then hit Ice Shards and most everything would be dead. Maybe a couple more Ice Shards for a higher hp enemy. Granted, it's probably not ideal for single target bosses.

Firewall is a good skill to talk about also. Eco said on it's own it's not good at all. But add in the enhancement, modifier and sorc talent choice and it all of a sudden becomes really good. Why is it good now? Mostly because of the added damage. Sure Mage's adds a little more usability but overall the way the skill is used has not changed. I believe this is not an isolated case but comparable to many other skills in the game. If the other skills just had their numbers tweaked/balanced they could be far better also. Showing that balance patches could really shift the meta in great ways. Sure a number of skills are functionally poor. As in poor design and no amount of balancing will help them. But a decent number of skills would be so much better if better balanced. Turning the skills from "avoid at all costs" to "pretty viable and a good consideration for your build".

Deep Freeze is one of the best skills in the game. It's a 4 second Flame Shield that when used in the Ice Blades CD reduction build makes you immortal. Just spam Flame Shield, Frost Nova, Ice Barrier & Deep Freeze to spawn Ice Blades & you can have 100% uptime on Flame Shield & Deep Freeze. The DPS isn't as high as double Hydras with Firewall/Ball but you're invincible & not reliant on getting any aspects. Can just wreck the butcher & sit right under Ashava the whole fight. I don't know if this build will be viable endgame because of the low DPS, but it's great for leveling.

The tooltip includes an indicator for this with either a [+] for additive damage and a [x] for multiplicative damage. You have to turn on advanced tooltips in the gameplay options to see this, but I include this in my skill cards during the video. Almost all damage sources in the game that increase damage are multiplicative across the board however, so as a general rule of thumb even if you don't know precisely it's a safe bet that it is likely multiplicative per unique source of damage increase.

Im glad you like burning but its not really good. The only good source of burning is firewall with 160% weapon damage over 6 seconds, the others are 30% to 40% weapon damage over 8 seconds and thats absolutely terrible. The enchantment from firebolt gives direct fire damage the burn effect with 30% weapon damage over 6 to 8 seconds. During the beta at level 25 thats like 5 damage per tick. That one fireball perk only gives 10% of all burning damage on the targets hit as extra direct damage. Since burning damage is so bad it amounts to very little damage unless your targets have multiple firewall effects on them. Also you mention the bouncing fireball. That comes from a unique which during a season you will be able to get about 2 to 3 so you might not get it at all. Also each bounce does 60% LESS damage so that is a terrible trade off. Its making fireball more aoe but much much less damage. Chill and freeze effects are good for mobs but not good for bosses so all the chill and freeze effects cause nothing on them, vulnerability in the frost tree is much better for bosses since you deal 20% extra damage to vulnerable targets.
