Try playing some simple exercises while trying different orientations of the mouthpiece. Listen and feel the differences that come through for you. I think you'll be surprised.
What about vertically? I see some soprano players (such as Dave Liebman and Grover Washington) hold the sax straight out, while others (such as Jess Gillam and Branford Marsalis) hold it down like a clarinet.

Everybody is different. I always think that folks should experiment a little to see what works best for them.
