The leisurely, moneyed life of the leisure classes of the thirties has vanished for ever. The elegance is still there of course, and the shops and the nightlife; but the rich and famous spend more time globe-trotting. The delights of nightclubs, restaurants and hotels are of a different order now. The time has long since past when various establishments vied for custom through the excellence of their music, their own bands for dancing and listening to, the glittering cabaret stars, singers, speciality acts and variety performers, all swept away into a past now fondly recalled by those lucky enough to have seen them perform, but who can now enjoy many of their performances captured on recordings made during those glamorous far off times.

@49jubilee It was Jimmy Dorsey's last recording. He passed shortly after.
In 1948 I was 16 years old and worked in a dance hall checking hats & coats. The band played the tunes from the 20's & 30's Thanks so much as this music takes me back. I also learned all the old dances and when not busy danced with the old gals What fun

That sounds like so much fun! I myself have been a coat check, (in music clubs/ bars). I could only IMAGINE how cool it must have been to experience 1940's big bands..and all those well dressed ladies and gents! You guys really knew how to dress back then.

Old gals, my foot! If you learned the 'old dances', etc., you were dancing with old gals who weren't old gals then. If you mean more like, now, you're likely to be an 'old pal'... But I suspect you were 16 then and so were they. LOL!! Dammit! You reminded me, I'm only a year behind you! 15 then!

What a time to have been alive! Both my parents were there! They had 3 kids by then, 8,6, and 2. Six more after that!! I love history. I only wish my parents told me more stories of their past. The ones they did tell me were fantastic! You were too young for the war, what a rich and powerful history.

I have an idea. You are only 90, I'll bet you could start a very successful KZread simply sitting in a chair reciting your stories. You lived through world War II. your perspective would be fantastic! Lupuspect perspective of an 8 to 16-year-old. I'm sure you have some great stories!!

Something to remember
It occurred to me these old songs and movies from the 30's are the perfect balm for today's panic, riots and pandemics. During the Great Depression people listened to the radio and went to the movies to find a bit of solace, peace and hope. I'm grateful that my grandparents told me stories of the old days and I watched the old movies with them. It reminds me of innocent happy times.

I wish there were still young people my age who could dance and enjoy themselves to this type of music and places where you could go with your friends to dance to these songs. In 2021, this playlist just makes me so nostalgic for times when we could talk to strangers and get together with friends. I miss socializing and spontaneity. I miss joy and romance and excitement. I guess I’ll just dance to this alone in my room.

Oh and my grandparents were married in 34, so the era resonated to them. Bowling in at 3am from dance halls in Leeds, bet they were rammed to the rafters ha!
Vintage music like this has wonderful lyrics that mean something and touch the heart.
Love this! I remember some of these tunes from old movies. I'm in my early 70s, so all of this sounds familiar; there was still nostalgia for it in the early 50s as the big bands died out. I always felt that I was born too late. Here were real musicians, real song writers, writing with nuance and elegance. None of the "let's do it in the street" 60s stuff I grew up with in my teens. Thank you!

I don't smoke, but the music just makes you want to light up one while sipping a whiskey neat in a big hat.
Music for the soul ,uplifting full of heart felt warmth unlike most of the modern noise we hear today, I think it was due to the fact this era was between two wars and people had a true sense of compassion and human worth born out of the suffering of war
This music makes me wish I could go back in time

In the wee hours of the morning, a half empty bottle of shiraz, on the aft deck of the James O'Brien, this fine music wafting across the bay, nothing could be finer
Loving these tunes, so much fab! Listening to these, being influenced by my late father who passed away recently. He had a lot of 78s stashed away that I used to listen to! I used to nick off with jazz big band and rhythm n blues stuff, even though I was brought up with 70s disco and Grease stuff! I'm 56 dad was 82. I love most music, but this vintage has a special at moment.
I am so thankful that someone decided to upload this wonderful music

Delightful! Only Hildegarde and Benny Carter were new names to me. I remember all the others on the radio when I was a kid during the war. Some appeared later on early TV & my parents had a record of Jean Sablon singing "Sur les Ponts d'Avignon", practically the first words I learned in French!
