Sophie Tucker - Some Of These Days (1927)
Музыка
"SOME OF THESE DAYS"
Sophie Tucker
Composed by Shelton Brooks
Accompanied by Ted Shapiro, piano and unknown musicians
Recorded September 2, 1927
Okeh unissued mx 81305-A
Born: January 13, 1887, Tulchyn, Ukraine
Died: February 9, 1966, New York City, NY
This particular version of her theme song was released for the first time some 30 years after it was recorded in 1927 on Columbia's LP archive series "The Original Sound of the 20s."
Sophie narrates the first part of the verse and tells how this trademark song describes the story of her life. She then finishes off this demonstration of sheer power with a full-voice chorus in the typical Tucker tradition.
"Some of These Days" was Sophie Tucker's biggest hit, but she almost missed it. One day in Chicago, Tucker's maid took her to task: "See here, young lady," the servant said, "since when are you so important that you can't hear a song by a colored writer? Here's this boy, Shelton Brooks, hanging around, waiting, like a dog with his tongue hanging out, for you to hear his song." Tucker listened, and liked what she heard-as did audiences who kept demanding this song from her for the next half century. [Ted Gioia, Jazz.com]

My 104 years old friend requested this song. It's the first time I'm hearing it, and its what it's for. 😅
It's amazing that she not only recorded at the dawn of the 20th century, but that she survived long enough to have made appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Sophie Tucker is one of the greats of the early recording industry!
Sophie Tucker never forgot how hard it was to get as famous and beloved as only SHE was. She never, EVER dissapointed her fans; to this day the most valuable copies of her autobiography are those which are unautographed, as there are so few copies that she never signed. She was no kid, but she undertook a back-breaking book tour as much to greet her fans as to plug her book.
for my great aunty Kathleen born 1929 who is in a nursing home with dementia she always sang this xxx

Growing up in Brooklyn Sophie was a big star. As a kid, I remember her on the Ed Sullivan show. A great performer and kind generous person. No one can sing like the great late Sophie Tucker. RIP great lady. God bless you.

My mom used to sing this song a lot when I was a kid. Now some 40 years after her passing, the words of this song ring true! I do miss her.....
Now 54, My Dad taught me to play guitar when I was a young boy. He, born in 1918 grew up on all of this music, and I consider myself extremely lucky to know all of these "Standards". Polkas, Jewish songs, Italian, and his favorite Cowboy songs like those sung by Gene Autry and others. I still go back to my "roots" when practicing. Makes me feel good to have a visit with Dad. Great to see all of you out there enjoying this music as well. God bless you all and Happy holidays to you too!!
As kids in the '50's, we always heard our parents speak of 'Sophie Tucker'...wow, seeing her re-enacted on Boardwalk Empire brings up old Memories...

La Nausée ... ¡Merci Sartre!
Just read a book about her. That woman never took "no" for an answer and was quite a character--a real stand up gal, too. Thanks for sharing her signature song.
I love her. My mother must have listened to her. Mama was in the business of staying young all her life!!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Her voice comes through strong and clear even with the ancient recording technology.

Thanks for the jazz. Thanks for literature.
A wonderful woman and what a performer with more class than anything we have today. A true original. I’ve loved this song for years and having read so much about this lady and her life it’s incredible. A first generation immigrant of that special generation that made American entertainment ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Bi-Costal Teacher Except that Tucker scarcely sings it at all. She talks the first half of it and mostly shouts the second half. There are few actual notes eventually, but not many.

Herbert Wells But that is what makes it so damn great! I prefer a song stylist than one who just gets up there and belts out the song to the rafters with no feeling, no heart, no soul behind it. I also like a talk-sing style. The song and her rendition of it are legendary so she must have done something correct...we are still discussing it over 100 years after Tucker's initial recording.

Yet...Sophie's is the one that is legendary and still referred to over 100 years later. Tucker first recorded it in 1911! I love Bobby Darrin and his version is terrific but it is Tucker's song.

She was the most popular "Vaudevillian" of her day. She asked Ethel Waters to teach her how to sing the way she did. That's the highest compliment I could think of. A great asking a newcomer to teach her technic. Both extraordinary talents!

She was Al Jolson without the paint. She was asking an Original to help her with her mimicing.
What little bits she might have lacked in physical beauty,(not many), she more than made up for with a powerful personality, voice and wit. God bless you Sophie...
That picture @2:58 with the Dodger & Yankee guys is PRICELESS! This song has been done by a million artists, but she'll always be the one and only...

Habe das Buch "Der Ekel" von Sartre beendet und wollte nun endlich hören... was es mit diesem Lied auf sich hat - ICH LIEBE ES!!!
My Nana was born in 1904. My Dad who was born in 1929 told me , "Some Of These Days", was her favorite song. I admire Ms. Tucker's voice, as this is the 1st time hearing it. Strong, Clean, Slow and Jazzie. Though I am used to a musical version with a faster beat performed by Benny Goodman and his quartet.
My grandfather knew her and Martha Raye. :-)
Sound is wonderful. Not a single scratch !!!
I was nine -be that seventy six years ago -my father loved classical music addict -played euphonium in Collingwood brass band - but Sophie was a classic different -my father loved Sophie tucker -a style unique -once seen or heard -never forgotten -that’s official
Was just watching Frasier on Hulu and they made reference to Sophie Tucker and I looked up who it was.

thank you so much for posting this!!! they just don't make singers like her anymore
I found this song reading Nausea, too. Thanks Jean-Paul
I love Sophie Tucker!
@nick2293 You caught me out - I almost fell out of my chair when "Sophie" took the stage - incredibly done. Boardwalk is a marvel, and has left all else in it's wonderful wake. A thousand Emmy's are waiting!!
Every now and then there is an Amy, a Janis or a Sophie that like angels from the Heavens remind me just how beautiful and fun song can be.
I saw Sophie Tucker on stage in Reno, 1953, I believe at the old Riverside Hotel, front row seats. She was sharing the bill with Ted Lewis. Even at 12, I knew I was seeing and hearing something really special.
Very Nice..
Thank you for Posting ! I first heard of Sophie Tucker via Bette Midler.

I'm here because she's referenced in Chicago, one of the best musicals of all time!!
well this is my first time ever hearing Sophie Tucker.. sorry to say, i am a singer / blues singer and i always wondered where my singing genes came from.. Just recently i found out that my grandmother Gertrude Jacobs and her sister Hilda.used to sing in all the pubs in London and she sounded like Sophie Tucker.. I never knew that in the early days when she used to sit me on her lap and tell me stories about London her home.. I feel in love with England bec. of her. but now to find out shesang
the great Sophie Tucker
