CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sophie (Meryl Streep) opens up to Stingo (Peter MacNichol) about her attempted suicide after being imprisoned in Auschwitz.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The year is 1947. Aspiring southern author Stingo (Peter MacNichol) heads to New York to seek his fortune. Moving into a dingy Brooklyn boarding house, Stingo strikes up a friendship with research chemist Nathan Landau (Kevin Kline) and Nathan's girlfriend, Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowska (Oscar-winner Meryl Streep). There is something unsettling about the relationship; Nathan is subject to violent mood swings, while Sophie seems to be harboring a horrible secret. Stingo soons learns that both Nathan and Sophie are strangers to truth; the audience is likewise led down several garden paths by a series of sepia-toned flashbacks, depicting Sophie's ordeal in a wartime concentration camp. The scene in which we discover the facts behind Sophie's "choice" is a gut-wrenching one; it might have been even more powerful had not the film taken so long to get there. It is betraying nothing to reveal that the character of Stingo is the alter ego of William Styron, upon whose best-selling novel the film was based. The film is rated R, due in great part to a disposable scene wherein Stingo tries to put the make on a "liberated" female intellectual.

For any person who enjoys watching acting as a craft, this is THE performance to see. It was one of the first movies I saw of hers, and my jaw was literally on the floor for over 2 hours. To this day I have no idea how she did what she did in Sophie's Choice: The level of raw, astonishing talent is difficult to comprehend. I mean, you simply cannot take your eyes off of her, and it's not b/c she's gorgeous either. Polish accent, perfect German, genius delivery, range of emotion. A class act!

" Listen to what she does with the one word "Christ": the tiny pause just before it, the slow formation of the first consonants, the suspension of the middle, the almost reluctant close of the word. She makes the monosyllable an utterance. It's wonderful Very, very few American actors could do it, and it's something worth being able to do. Still, it's noticeable"

Hello from P.R. When she prepared for this role, she sought help with a German lady and with a Polish lady...she took classes with them...both in German and Polish...theres is a video here in Ytube that explains how she paid special attention to the polish lady, her use of diptongs and vowels and how she even moved her jaw as she spoke....she spent six months specifically with the Polish lady as her coach three times a week 4 hours a day... i guess it paid off....

I know a few Polish people and none of them sound the same speaking English. All of their accents are different, some sound like this, others don't.
