Sony Xperia 1 VI In-depth Camera Review | Real-world Tests & Comparisons

Ғылым және технология

I've been using the Sony Xperia 1 VI, Sony's 2024 flagship for three weeks, have taken almost 100GB worth of photos and videos, captured candid shots, and test comparisons against some of the best phones around, including the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, OPPO Find X7 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
After all of this testing, I'm in a great position to reflect on how good, bad, and underbaked the Sony Xperia 1 VI camera really is. Without giving too much away, the macro camera functionality blew me away, and the primary camera photos and videos were solid as a rock. I also loved the telephoto camera with its extended reach, particularly in bright environments. However, Sony's reluctance to lean into computational photography and the Xperia 1 VI's low light performance across its secondary cameras limits how competitive it is for anyone who wants a simpler-to-use point-and-shoot camera phone.

I'm going to be holding onto the phone for a bit longer, so let me know if there's anything you want to know about it, and I'm curious to know what you think of the Xperia 1 VI's camera? And if you're thinking about picking up an Xperia 1 VI from Amazon, if you use my link - amzn.to/3WQjsDz - I'll get a few quid to put to my next video. Cheers all! Basil

Not competitor for VIVO, or Xiaomi. Photo samples taken by optical zoom are with poor quality. They looks like taken by digital zoom, but not optical. Ultrawide camera with IMX363, that`s old sensor was on Google Pixel )) Vivo`s zoom senson bigger than on Xperia 1VI main sensor! What i can say... For SONY - Game Over

Sony's attitude of valuing its technological capabilities and creators is wonderful, but unfortunately it is being pressured by the iPhone and Galaxy, which have completely different approaches, and Chinese manufacturers, who have different national systems, are working with the government to reduce prices, which is reducing the number of countries where the phone is sold, putting Sony in a difficult position. I agree with Sony's thinking. It is clear from the precedents of HTC and LG that some kind of trigger can greatly change the market share of smartphone manufacturers, so I hope that Sony's smartphones will recover someday.

Thanks Basil. I found a dummy unit in an O2 shop yesterday which was only held onto the stand with some Blu-Tac, so - thanks to the sympathetic staff! - I was able to hold the handset rather than admire it locked in a little cage on the countertop, and compare it with the S24 Ultra (which is about a half-centimetre wider, maybe a little thicker and about the same height). I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to hold and use, given that it's the larger of the Sony 'phones. I will be migrating over from a 5-ii, but should be a welcome upgrade. It's so hard to give up on Sony after all these years - I almost feel obliged to buy one just to make sure they keep making them, and avoid the Samsung-Apple duopoly! Thanks for another helpful in-depth video, and have a great weekend.

Really nice review and break down. I actually had an OPPO find X3 pro and I got some incredible shots with it , the micro mode was somewhat addictive but ultimately I was so scared of scratching the lens as you had to get so so close like 3mm to take a picture or video with it The inbuilt macro was very good but the camera really was an auto monster just point and shoot. The later updates focused more on a.i usage than manual along with all the extra modes you could do loads with it. It still gets improvement updates today. I passed it to my wife and bought the Xperia 1 IV and that has been faultless since the later updates I love editing and controlling my shots and the Xperia 1 IV nailed it Video is untouched if you know the basics and slow mo 4k is great fun in bad weather . I upgraded to the V later in the year as I needed another phone for work and the V did it all . Occasionally it bugs out in high heat environments but it has everything I need. The V Tele zoom got a mild improvement after Android 14 the final image is slightly crisper and.can be improved with the creative look VV setting. I wasn't going to upgrade as I want to keep the V my last Xperia z5 compact lasted 7 years. I always feel the latest Xperia ends up been how the previous should have been. Also I get annoyed we don't get any substantial software improvements to previous models It's like a one year window and that's it. Improved Bokeh and video editor were nice but we didn't get the improvements to the HDR Algorithm or 48mm sensor crop that could have been ported via driver updates from the 5 series. Still as much as I like Sony mobiles this year wasn't as big a jump as I was hoping The other changes are good , loss of a 4k screen isn't terrible but not upgrading all the sensors to the CMOS stacked 888 to me was a huge mistake. That sensor is outstanding in performance in both dynamic range and noise suppression while still keeping the 30fps shooting speeds . If the Xperia Pro c is true I'll save up and aim for that. Still build quality is amazing on these phones , after care needs improving as I had an issue with my first MK1 V and it took months to get a replacement as SONY now send all repairs via SBE LTD in the UK

Apple is selling 128 GB devices with feature restrictions due to limited storage and charging ridiculous prices for storage upgrades. Sony starts at 256 and gives you 1,5 TB for small money on top. I get your point and it's okay, but come on, that isn't really a downside. You can record the videos internally and just move them over to the SD card.

Then do another same test, now set display to auto brightness instead.

Honestly the people downplay the importance of the 4k 21.9 aspect ratio but in the right hands it's really important for rewatching footage without having to go to a computer and also people who use their phones more for watching movies at 4k quality is a dream and also 21.9 aspect ratio is really comfortable to hold and not bulky feelings, I used pixel 7 pro and Samsung s24 ultra and both got good cameras but the phones felt like they gonna fall at any moment but using Xperia 1V I never had that issue Sony really lost a big shot here because they could released the 1VI for £900 and made another version with the 4k screen and 21.9 aspect ratio and boosted up storage and ram for £1299 and killed the market

It has problems with overexposure in automode or not? I mean i know i could go for s24u for example but i like the fact it has 3.5 jaxk and i like Sony plus I'm not sure but i think tehre will be more details in not that hard overshapened picture, on the other hand Samsung has 200 mpix main camera..

Eagerly waiting for that classic speaker test. Also would like to see the battery performance test and a screen comparison especially the outdoors performance. How is the thermal behaviour of the phone? I would like to suggest that you may add a feel good meter of sorts in short medium and long term usage. With all the extensive experience I have of owning devices I must say that at the end of the day it is the feel good factor that wins over all the positive and negative points. So much so people are willing to pay a premium for that. Now I know it would vary from person to person as some would pay that premium for a certain brand, yet I think there can be some bare minimum standard of that feel good factor that can be established at an overall average, IUKWIM. If not a meter then at least it should be expressed in some standardized way in the review to add another dimension for the viewers in better understanding the device. For example some find a heavy large bulkier device in their hand while others prefer to hold a more compact and light weight device. While a vast majority of people wouldn't like a phone that feels light to the extent of feeling weak or cheap. In my opinion Xperia strikes that perfect balance. I like the 1 ii the most for that matter. Even the 1 iii doesn't feel as good as the 1 ii does in my opinion. Looking forward, cheers.

I’m most interested in screen, dac and flashlight, gps and signal performance. I’ve had the 1iv, 5iv and 1v all of which have had compass accuracy issues. I'll probably be preordering it, as I like the improved zoom, the tele macro plus the longer-lasting battery. Although looking at 15:29, it shows that Sony needs to change the telephoto from 12 to 48mp to retain detail and add an AF to the selfie (like they did on my old XZ Premium!!) It really seems as though this is the Xperia 1 IV (b) as Sony is only changing a single camera each year (since the IV) Hopefully, next year Sony upgrade all the cameras, as I was hoping the rumours were true and all cameras were improved sensor-wise size.

Sony (1V and I guess 1VI) produces excelent (not overprocessed) Raw-Files that can be edited in Lightroom perfectly! You can raise the quality and details in the Sony Raws so much compared to their Jpgs. It is absolutely impressive. With Samsung S24u for example you get very bad Raws (Pro Mode and Expert Raw) because they are already highly processed and they are not real Raws, only processed Jpgs in a Raw-Container. A thirdparty app can solve this little bit (motionCam or gCam), but it is tricky and not always good. So for photograper-freaks the Sony is way better than any other phone.

can you do focus bracketing or focus stacking with the sony? Like, in manual focus mode, can the camera do burst capture, so that i can change the focus as it takes pics? The huawei does really fast burst photography, but only in auto focus mode. The sony doesn't do as much in phone post processing, but the Huawei does. but what do the images look like from the sony after ive played with them in Lumina Neo? Shots from my Huawei P60 Art (one step up from the p60 Pro) often can't be improved much in Lumina, but I bet the pics from the sony will benefit a lot from edits in Neo. Anyone have anything to contribute? Any one done this that can upload example images before and after. I really enjoy editing my best shots myself.

Regarding to the spec sheet of the Xperia 1 VI on the UK web site, it does not have OIS for the 85-170 and it also does not record 4K 120 on the 85-170. The Xperia 1 V did not have this restriction on the telephoto lens. Is this due to the added macro capabilities? Great video by the way, liled it a lot.

Thank you for the Video! For sure i would go for the Samsung Ultra as my father has it but i need memory expansion for my music and the headphonejack is also welcome (if it is better than in the 1V:). I preordered it at 15th and hope i will get it soon! Yesterday i heard about Pro-c and was not sure to cancel my order and wait for the new Pro for the better sensor but then i read that it will come "maybe" in october or later:/ My Samsung 20+ has battery issues, the photos are not very good and all the phones i tried this and last year could not satisfy me at least for memory issues and softwareproblems, thats why i will be waiting for the 1Vi;) best regards from Ringo

I own a couple of SONY cameras (A1 & A7Siii) so a SONY mobile would be seriously welcomed for many reasons especially the flagship mobile. Was thinking. Maybe Sony is tired of the question of leaving the cellphone market that they gone against for years. So to go against that maybe the rethinking their approach to get more mainstream and less nisch. So the pro models maybe doing a comeback while xperia 1 and 5 get less nisch and more mainstream and the 10 is all mainstream. Could mean growing in markets. I dont like leaving 21:9 but sure less apps would work strange when it comes to screen format. Do hate you cant even film in 21:9.

  • @tech_edit

    @tech_edit

    28 күн бұрын

Yes, they support macro on the ultra-wide up close, but the telephoto cameras don't focus anywhere near as close. Here's a brief blurb I wrote on telemacro cameras for a Digital Camera World. It explains why the Sony implementation of a near focus distance plus a telephoto camera is ideal. Hope that clarifies what I mean: "Telephoto macro photography, also known as telemacro, involves using the telephoto lens to capture close-up photos and offers numerous benefits. It adds distance between the subject and the photographer (particularly handy for shots of insects). This, in turn, eradicates shadows typically associated with macro photography and also eliminates wide-angle distortion."

Sony doesn't like artificial images created by AI, even if they look beautiful to the untrained eye, but it's clear that they believe that cameras should capture the truth optically. Sony always says that it's for creators, but they probably think that if anyone can take the same photo with AI, it's not creative. I personally agree with the idea of reflecting the photographer's intention, and in fact, the optical photos created by Sony have a more natural finish than those processed by AI. Above all, photos created by AI are not interesting because you can't tell the photographer's intention when you look at them. However, I agree that there are disadvantages to trying to cover everything optically in the limited space of a smartphone, such as not being able to make the sensor larger. Also, Sony is technically capable of completely suppressing overexposure automatically, but the reason they don't do this is a mystery as to whether there is a problem with the image creation that Sony is aiming for, or whether they dislike the idea of brightening only the dark parts and resulting in a flat image. I do think that Sony's direction is effective in expressing the brightness of the light source and the glossiness of the subject, but I prefer relatively low-key photos, so when I use Xperia, I often take photos with negative exposure compensation.

You buy a Sony phone because you love Sony and their philosophies not because they put out the best image quality. You just have to be ok with that. The camera UI is unmatched on a phone and they still support two of the greatest hardware legacy features in the microSD card slot and 3.5mm headphone jack. At least the VI does have class leading battery life now.
