Sony XAV-AX5550D - Install into a VW T4

I wanted to have a double din head unit in our VW T4 Siouxsie. However I didn't want to cut the strengthening bar that goes across the dash. Having had a couple of T4's now I have had a couple different solutions mostly from Chinese suppliers but they never worked really well. I stumbled on a post about this Sony unit a little while ago and decided it could be the perfect solution. It also had Android Auto which was something I also wanted.
In this video I will take you through the unboxing and the complete install including the things that didn't go so well. I also add a couple of USB sockets one in the glove box and one in a switch blank on the dash.

Ps, I cut a hole in the little cubby hole that is straight under the stereo for the android link, just drill cut a circle in that. the cable is coming through a rubber grommet, the cabke end was stretched/forced through a little slit in the grommet, then the grommet is fitted into that hole in the plastic trim. The usb port cant fall away into the dashboard void without a lot of force, i cable tied a little cable bundle behind the grommet (behind the dash) so it cant be pulled too far away, so it doesn't come out of the back of the stereo. I also have that double usb power port, but we use that for the Aircon (okay okay, a petrol station desk fan 😂)

That’s a great solution, we don’t have the T4 anymore but I do miss it 😀

@@FootstepsTyretracks you sold a T4? Sacrilege 🤣 Glad that what I want to do with a leisure switch makes sense to someone else 😀

Hiya, I have a T4, and have a similar model Sony Xav that i fitted. I have a slightly technical question. The radio was fitted using the standard loom/harness so it comes off of the engine battery at all times. But this means I can't have the stereo on without the keys in the ignition and clicked once. I'd love to attach a switch to use it on the leisure battery (which is solar charging) but dont know where to start. I see this video is two years old, and i know what vanners are like.... You might have had a tinker and done something similar to bypass the key. Basically it'd be great to leave the stereo on when i nip out of the van, eg to campsite loo blocks, and still let my teenage kid listen to tunes... But without the risk of the van being driven off whilst im in the shower. 😅 I realise its a massive long shot that you might know, but if you don't ask, you don't learn. Cheers mate

I’m get what you are trying to do and it would be possible if the power came from your leisure battery circuit however that would present the problem of it not turning off with the key so you would need a switch to turn it off. But all totally doable.

I have a T4 to do but just above the 3 heater buttons it has another round dial which is annoying..so I'll be installing a xtrons flipout screen. Reversing camera Upgrade speakers, install a subwoofer, Upgrade the head light's to LED.

Ideal I got t4 and just brought exactly the same head unit. What are the chances! Not tried fitting it yet. But looks like you have saved me some time so thanks. Only question is did the surround fit securely in the end? I have a after market stereo so hopefully that cage will work also

The surround was the biggest issue but it is secure and look like it was mean't to be in the dash. Thanks for watch don't hesitate if you have any more questions.
